This will be $35 on sale at both Criterion.com and BarnesandNoble.com in sales this fall, if you can wait it out.
It’s $35 right now at the Barnes & Noble website.

Anyone know if a title is out of stock online and can’t even buy it if you go to a store location they can and have it delivered? There are ton of titles that are out of stock and can’t even place an order online.

With the next batch of reveals in a couple of weeks we'll be getting October titles. I really hope we get at least ONE Japanese horror film and if I were a betting man, I'd say it will be Demon Pond. If we got Goke: Body Snatcher from Hell, The Living Skeleton, Jigoku, or pretty much anything that would be nice, but really hoping for Demon Pond.

Yesterday I visited Barnes & Noble's flagship store in Union Square NYC, with the sole purpose of finally picking up a Blu-ray copy of my most-wished for Criterion, and 2nd favorite movie of all time: Ozu's Floating Weeds (1959). First off, this store is huge. It's the largest B&N store, comprising 4 floors, and a pretty big movie section. Their Criterion shelves were extensive, including tons of releases, and bigger box sets like the Bergman, and Zatoichi collections. It's probably the 2nd best thing to visiting the Criterion Closet.

I began searching for the title, first under F, and found nothing. Then I realized it would probably be under T or S for "The" or "Story..of Floating Weeds", but nope, nothing. I started getting a little depressed, and figured I was going to have to "settle" for something else. A worker noticed, and asked if I needed help,. I said I'm looking for Floating Weeds. "Leaves?" she asked. No Weeds."W E E D S". She looked on her computer, and said they just got restocks of some titles in, let me check. She brought out this large container, and pulled out a copy. I was beyond ecstatic.

Many of the regulars know I've been wanting this title for over 10 years now, with it always finding a place somewhere on my summertime predictions lists. I've been fortunate to see the 4K restoration twice in theaters already, but I'm so glad to finally have a copy of it to watch at home, especially with Ebert's wonderful commentary track as well.

I'm not sure if this has already been done, but I figured I'd do a small comparison between my DVD release, and the Blu-ray. This was impromptu, so pardon the picture quality.

As you can see above, the artwork is slighting different in its composition, with the bottom actor getting much of his costume cropped off. The color of the artwork is also different, with the Blu-ray being lighter. Compared to the Blu-ray, the DVD case is huge, having two separate compartments for the two films. For the Blu-ray, both films are on a single disc, and again the disc art theme is lighter in color than the DVDs.

The DVD didn't come with a booklet, but rather a fold-out leaflet. The BD also has a leaflet, but there are a few differences. The DVD uses high quality glossy paper stock, while the BD has a thinner standard paper feel. Both features Donald Richie's essay on one side, and credits/transfer info on the other, but the BD also adds a set of pictures for each of the films.

Bonus: Here are my two tickets from the Floating Weeds screenings I went to in 2019, and 2023. I have them tucked in my DVD case (along with a couple other Ozu tickets).

[Show spoiler]

So yeah, this post turned out way bigger than I originally planned. I highly recommend checking out Floating Weeds, and the silent original The Story of Floating Weeds, if you haven't seen them yet. They are quite different from any other Ozu film in my opinion. While Ozu films aren't particularly hard to get into, I do feel Floating Weeds is one of his most accessible works too.
Enjoyed the novel

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I could have sworn I read something on here about I Married A Witch getting a new 4K restoration. If that is indeed true, then I'm hoping that that ends up being one of the October announcements on 4K UHD. If it isn't, then I'm pulling for Captain Blood, Girl Shy or maybe Top Hat (4K UHD or bust on Top Hat, Criterion).

that and Peeping Tom. I wonder if Criterion doesn't want to sell those at a discount so limited the stock.

If anyone is in the LA area, the Academy Museum will be showing the 4K restoration of I Know Where I'm Going! on July 27th. It's the west coast premiere of the restoration.

https://www.academymuseum.org/en/pro...e-41edc5207b7c

it's part of a bigger Powell and Pressburger program, with lots of other great films included.

What a beautiful and heartwarming post. So glad you finally got the release you wished for. A shame that Criterion seemingly don’t have a comprehensive Ozu set in the works, otherwise they’d surely postponed releasing this individual BD until long after a potential set release.

You also just made me want to buy a copy too in order to listen to the Ebert commentary and see A History of Floating Weeds in HD as Carlotta only received a SD master for their "Ozu en 20 films" collection.
BTW, this and their other more recently released "Ozu - 6 films rares ou inedits" set were encoded by FiM. Same applies to the individual release of Floating Weeds: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Float...lu-ray/277516/

If you’re capable of adding external subtitles, their Ozu sets would be perfect for you.

Very frustrated that Bound 4K is out of stock online (I live overseas so I can't go to a physical store) and that Amazon hasn't matched the price. Hopefully, they'll re-stock it before the sale ends on the 28th.

Janus Films HQ has just given Michael Mann's Miami Vice a 5/5

As to whether or not this is ANY indication of a future release, we now know that whoever runs the Janus Films Letterboxd account has good taste.

https://letterboxd.com/janusfilms/film/miami-vice/

Credit goes to u/International-Sky65 (This is how I first found out)
