Criterion

The October announcement should include a horror film. Here is my wish list:

I Walked with a Zombie (Jacques Tourneur)
Braindead (Peter Jackson)
Near Dark (Kathryn Bigelow)

I admittedly have never seen The Earrings Of Madame De..., however I passed on it after hearing the negative reviews in this thread. It's a shame too, because that was one of the first titles I wanted to see when I discovered the Collection all those years ago.

You mean the BBS set? Or is there an Easy Rider standalone?

Regarding the package, I now know why everyone hates Digibooks so much. The book is jammed between the tray and the front of the package, and it damages the book. If you take the book out, now the package gets damaged. You're almost in no-win territory with those packages. (My personal trick is to cut up cardboard and put it in the box, and put the book beside the movie on my shelf.)

I also recommend double dipping on the 1998 Criterion DVD, which has some one-of-a-kind special features not on any other release.

Tough call on Pat Garrett. I'm only familiar with the three cuts we've had for decades: the theatrical cut, the 1988 Turner Cut (First Preview Version), and the 2005 Seydor cut. My go-to was always the 1988 cut, which just seemed perfect to me. It didn't have the additional 40 minutes that the rough cut had (which I'd still like to see if it ever surfaces), but it felt like a complete, coherent story. The Seydor cut was hit-or-miss, and the theatrical cut was terrible. It make little sense if you haven't seen the 1988 cut, and it's horrendous once you have seen the 1988 cut because now you know everything that's wrong with it.

I think the 4K and Blu-ray have the theatrical cut, the Second Preview Version, and a new reworking of the 2005 Seydor cut. If anyone on here has seen all three cuts, they're better equipped to answer this. Sight unseen (I'm waiting for the full July slate to drop to go up there), I'd assume the Second Preview Version would be the one to go with.

So my local AFI theater is having a Godzilla marathon for the next 2 months; I got tickets for 70th Anniversary 4K Resto of Godzilla 1954, Destroy all Monsters, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974), Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs Destroyah, GMK: GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK.

I'll be interested to see if the Janus logo shows up on Destroyah and GMK, will report back.

I have no actual guesses because I have no information or experience to go off, but my personal desires for this announcement off the top of my head would be Killers of the Flower Moon, a bluray upgrade of Pepe le moko, Four Letter Words and/or Prince of Broadway, and Isle of Dogs.

EDIT: I forgot Sean Baker said his next Criterion releases would be early 2025 so I guess those are out but still!

Some predictions:
Barry Lyndon 4K (I think this is finally the month)
Pandora's Box (at least Blu-ray, possibly 4K)
No P&P unfortunately (seriously, we need some P&P in November)
Nothing from Japan either (five months now)
We ARE, in fact, getting some Scorsese, but I'm unsure which one
I think something Lynch, but I'm unsure which one (Twin Peaks will eventually happen, we just don't know when)

With Pandora's Box covering Classic Hollywood, BL covering WB, and Scorsese covering the modern classics, unfortunately that's where my brain caps out this month. The rest of the titles are just "here's what I'd like them to release" titles.

I think the realistic one I want most of all is Brazil on 4K with all three cuts, and the unrealistic one I want most of all is the uncut version of The Devils (which is allegedly on the Criterion Channel, anyone know anything?).

1. Michael Bay would be most welcome in the Collection. His movies are admittedly weak when the gunshots and explosions die down, but they're still entertaining as hell. The Rock and Armageddon would be welcome back, and Pearl Harbor would be newly welcome, should they ever show up.

Even though the other, non-explosive 80% of Armageddon and Pearl Harbor suck.

2. Plan 9 is a film with such a stature that I can seriously say it has a chance of getting into the Collection.

-It has a notable status as "the worst film ever made". (Heaven's Gate had/has that title too.)
-It's notoriously PD, and even the "restored" releases leave a lot to be desired. (Criterion has released tons of PD titles in the past, including It's A Wonderful Life back in the laserdisc days and Night Of The Living Dead recently.)
-It's a popular cult film, even if 99% of the audience is watching it to laugh at how terrible it is. (They released Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, ffs.)
-There's few new people finding Plan 9, which means it's a film that they can reintroduce to a new generation, thereby getting more money than they could by selling it to the people who already bought copies in the past.
-Between its stature and the lack of decent copies available, it has a strong chance of making them a lot of money.

I would be neither shocked nor surprised if Plan 9 From Outer Space gets into the Collection, and I would buy it.

If I'm not mistaken, Pepe le moko was restored by Ritrovata. While that shouldn't be a problem, because this is a black and white film (The Trial was solid), never underestimate Ritrovata's ability to royally f*ck up a transfer.

The caps on Criterion look like the old DVD. While one of them looks good enough to pass for a Blu-ray, I sadly don't think that's up there this month. It's a shame too, because that's a great film.

Yeah, I feel like it'll come eventually, but I have no idea when haha. My girlfriend just loves the flick so I'd love for Criterion to finally upgrade it so I can buy it

Both Cape Fears would be interesting. We know these are with a label after all, and have been for some time now (over 3 years at least). If it was any other label, I have to think they'd have got round to them by now...

Was able to stop for a quick B&N shopping trip this weekend:

Added those to an earlier haul, so now I'm done until the October Flash Sale:

I struggled whether to upgrade Days of Heaven and Picnic at Hanging Rock, because I felt the BDs already looked great. But in the end, those are two of my favorites in the collection and I wanted to have the best possible versions.

It really is a "when", not an "if". Criterion put it out previously, plus they have contracts with everyone involved with the film and its restoration.

Now when they'll finally release it is another matter. It took five years for After Hours and Pat Garrett and seven years for Freaks.

The long wait guarantees they're with Criterion. The longest wait I've seen with Arrow is one year.

Read the reviews and browse the caps on Picnic At Hanging Rock. Color palette had some issues, and there's DNR. Nothing on the level of James Cameron or anything, but it's still worth noting.

I’m mostly just hoping for a 4K upgrade of Spellbound, Notorious, and Rebecca. I just have the bare bones MGM release and would love to upgrade.

While the current Criterion's for Rebecca and Notorious are leaps and bounds better than the MGM releases, I have both, I understand the sentiment. I have not gone to their back catalogue to buy a non-4K disc since they started releasing them because I don't want to get duped into getting anything twice.

Either WHV or Criterion. I don't know why Kubrick films take so long, since they inevitably will sell.

I know the old Blus of EWS and Lolita are OOP. There may be DVDs still in print, but they're more there for those multi-film sets that pop up every now and then. The only store where I saw new standalones of either title is B&N, and that was years ago.
