I don’t know I wouldn’t be surprised if we get more Shinoda titles along with more Japanese titles this year, and next year. As Criterion’s going through more and more of their DVD only titles they have with many of them being upgraded to Blu-Ray and 4K UHD. I think we might get the Bad Sleep Well, Double Suicide, and Stray Dog this year, and maybe more Japanese titles next year.

There’s been a lot of Criterion movies upgraded from the old DVDs to Blu-Ray, and 4K UHD this year. I could definitely see some big titles from their catalogue getting upgraded this year, and many of these titles would make a lot of sense.

The Thief of Baghdad they’re upgrading Pandoras Box so maybe this one too
Stray Dog
The Bad Sleep Well
Great Expectations
Drunken Angel
Hamlet
Man Bites Dog
Shoot the Piano Player
Schizopolis
Under the Volcano
White Dog

White Dog
I'd love to see White Dog get the upgrade it's been "Currently Unavailable" for about 4 years now.

All plausible choices, but I feel like Thief of Baghdad in particular is a certainty sooner than later.

Finally, after over a decade since I was on this forum whining over the lack of Glauber Rocha in the states! Glad to finally see this in better quality.

You're welcome?
Kind of sad if seeing one short scene out of context is enough to completely write off an entire film altogether.
Don't get me wrong here though, I'm definitely no fan of Harmony Korine and his work is clearly not for everyone's cinematic tastes/sensibilities.
Just a little surprised how transgressive art and entertainment is still capable of being off-putting to others especially in this internet day and age.
(I'm guessing it was the onslaught of deliberately offensive and vulgar language that "got the job done" in this case.)
Crazy how Gummo (1997) is a film that continues to elicit divisive responses over 25 years later.

The October Criterion releases are quite strong. Like many have said before me, they never expected to see Gummo on 4K BD!

Yeah, I can't with Harmony. That Korine, Larry Clark, even a lot of Van Sant from that period, stuff I was never able to get into, try as some of the "edgier" people in high school with me tried to get me to take in.

I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t been upgraded yet I hope they get to it soon most likely next year if I have to be honest. Eureka has a Blu-Ray yet Criterion doesn’t it just doesn’t make any sense. This title and Thief of Baghdad are probably next in line big title wise to get upgraded. Along with the Japanese titles and the Charles Dickens films.

Art is ultimately subjective, so I don't think it's especially surprising that not everyone appreciates works that seek to offend or shock, even if they're well-crafted. I can enjoy a wide variety of films, but unfortunately this doesn't seem like one of them.

I think it's exactly what Korine would have wanted, though, and is a testament to how effectively he delivered on his artistic vision. That's something I can appreciate, even if I'm not interested in the film itself.

I want them to release Faster Pussycat. Mostly because no one else has, and I've never seen it. And it always gets mentioned in various exploitation film books and it makes me feel incomplete not having seen it.

Oh, for sure.
Just to be clear: I'm not trying to criticize or pass judgement on anyone that isn't interested in this specific film nor anyone that doesn't particularly enjoy watching films that intentionally provoke and challenge audiences' sensibilities.

I'm just personally surprised (and mildly humored if I'm being completely honest) that art/entertainment of any kind can "ruffle the feathers" of (adult) viewers still, especially considering everything that has already "been done or said before" over so many decades by now.
I guess I just always figured that most individuals (especially well-rounded cinephiles) would be more "desensitized", "tolerant", or "indifferent" overall in relation to confrontational content and not express such strong distaste towards certain works, even if it's something they're not a fan of to begin with.
The old notion that "nothing (in art and entertainment) is truly shocking anymore" constantly sticks in my mind.

Not sure if "culture shock" is the appropriate term to use here but nothing seems to ever phase everyone that I know unless something is actually real.
As a fan of all things obscene and extreme, I am personally surprised time and time again just how many people there are out there that do NOT "appreciate works that seek to offend or shock, even if they're well-crafted"... because I live for that kind of stuff and always say "bring on your worst"!
When others feel the compulsion to express such contrasting attitudes, opinions, and reactions, I occasionally find it all a bit baffling and perhaps a little disheartening at times.
I must admit: such sentiments of disgust and disapproval kind of catch me off guard just as much as someone vehemently declaring "I HATE Pizza!"
I find situations such as this even more surprising (dare I say discouraging or disappointing as well?) when I continue to read so many displeased reactions from so-called fellow fans of controversial horror/exploitation films throughout this website.
I just find it "interesting" how so many supposedly "likeminded" individuals aren't really as "likeminded" as we might initially assume or like to believe.
"Oh sure, you're completely fine with this style of transgressive cinema but you draw the line with that style of transgressive cinema? Sheesh, what a wimp/poser... and to think I originally thought you were cool..."
Again: I'm not speaking directly about Gummo (1997) here, just some general observations and experiences that have left me slightly puzzled and amused by other people on here.
I'm not trying to insult anyone or initiate a heated argument either, just attempting to provide something to think about.

Kind of funny - I don't think I'm displeased by a movie that is seeking to offend, or is clearly an exploitation/provocative film.

I've never seen "Salo" or "Irreversible" but those are movies that are trying to shock/disturb the viewer - so what would be offensive? That I wasn't offended enough? So for "Gummo" I know I didn't like it - I've seen it once a long time ago, and I thought it was dumb and unpleasant, but some of that was what it was trying to be, so that's somewhat the movie's point.

I am more disturbed/offended by movies - that through no fault of their own - show the morality of their era in an unironic way that doesn't hold up (IMO).

It's been said before, but many of the teen-focused rom-coms of the 1980s use stalking, harassment, revenge porn, and date rape as comedic plot points. They aren't being "provocative," they actually believed they're being funny. So those are the movies I liked back then but today find unwatchable and "offensive."

That's where you get to each person's line - I think "Animal House" is clever but "Porky's" is gross. You say tomato.

The October releases will be easy for me to skip, but I'm glad for those of you are excited about them. With the impressiveness of the August and September slates (which are more suited to my tastes), I'll be happy to take a month off.
