While Criterion's willing to put a lot of money into releases, I'm not exactly sure they're willing to kiss the ring to get a release done. I also doubt that if someone just gives an exorbitant demand, they're just going to start writing checks for the sake of getting that one movie.

If they were willing to bend over and break the bank, Looking For Mr. Goodbar would've been out on DVD 20 years ago.

I have no idea what the sales figures would be, but at the very least they'd break even and make a small profit.

I didn't want to say this and crap all over everyone else, but Gummo is one of those movies where I didn't like it the first time, and each successive watching just sank my opinion further and further. At least Kids holds up, although I've admittedly only seen it a few times.

Even for people like me who regard profanity and vulgarity as artforms, that was just f*cking pathetic.

I still say in 40-50 years, when all the early stuff is PD and the songs in them are PD too, Criterion's going to rerelease everything from the shorts to Female Trouble, with all the original music finally intact.

And I'll happily pick every one of them up.

I think we might get the Bad Sleep Well, Double Suicide, and Stray Dog this year, and maybe more Japanese titles next year.

There’s been a lot of Criterion movies upgraded from the old DVDs to Blu-Ray, and 4K UHD this year. I could definitely see some big titles from their catalogue getting upgraded this year, and many of these titles would make a lot of sense.

The Thief of Baghdad they’re upgrading Pandoras Box so maybe this one too
Stray Dog
The Bad Sleep Well
Great Expectations
Drunken Angel
Hamlet
Man Bites Dog
Shoot the Piano Player
Schizopolis
Under the Volcano
White Dog
1. If I'm not mistaken, The Thief Of Baghdad is with Goldwyn. They're notorious for giving zero effs about their catalog, and more detail is available in the WAC thread. It ain't pretty though.

2. Which Hamlet? If you mean Hamlet 48, then that would be great. That along with Around The World In 80 Days are the last two Best Picture winners outside of the modern era that aren't on Blu in the US yet.

3. I don't know what's holding up Man Bites Dog, since that was huge on DVD and laserdisc.

4. White Dog was controversial for years, and was unavailable on video until the 2008 Criterion DVD. Perhaps it was vaulted by the studio, which would be a shame but unfortunately not a surprise.

The 1948 Hamlet yeah I found out that Criterion had released the film on DVD years ago, but they just haven’t released it yet same with White Dog, and Man Bites dog. Although, I have a feeling Man Bites Dog will end up getting released before Thief of Baghdad, and White Dog.

Ebert disliked the 119-minute cut of THE BROWN BUNNY. Someone in the BROWN BUNNY thread at Blu-ray.com commented that Ebert later reviewed the shorter version and said that it felt like a different, better film. If that's accurate, then kudos to Ebert for taking the trouble to do so.

It is accurate. They later met and discussed the controversy and the changes Gallo made to the film after Cannes.

(Also IIRC, Gallo wrote later about meeting Ebert with his wife Chaz and how much he admired their marriage and genuine bond.)

While the oft-mentioned Kurosawa box set would be a dream come true (imagine the AK 100 set as either Blu-ray or 4K+Blu-ray), Toho is so dickish and the relationship between Toho and Criterion is so strained that I'd be shocked if a set like that ever came to fruition.
I'm hoping the relationship with Criterion and Toho has gotten somewhat better. Seven Samurai on 4K for sure will be happening. November might be too soon after the screenings, but if not November, then May-June I would say.

I just wish Toho would be open to more labels to be able to license from them. It seems like BFI in the UK made some sort of headway over there.

It feels like they grudgingly pick one label in a particular region, one that they either have long history with, or has a fairly elevated reputation like BFI. I always had the sense that Toho would just not release anything outside of Japan if they could get away with it.

The reason I say this is the film is not accessible to mainstream audiences. It's kind of like an experimental album from an obscure artist. It is a hard sell unless this kind of art fascinates or interests you.

Personally, I saw it once and "endured" it. But it's not a film I can revisit again unless it's once a decade or so. Much like Julien Donkey Boy (which I find more interesting since it features Werner Herzog), it's purely subjective art. I'm rather impressed by the filmmaker, Harmony Korine, for several other films including The Beach Bum (probably his most accessible film) and Spring Breakers (a close second), but this movie (Gummo) is not one I enjoyed watching or appreciating from vague memory
[Show spoiler](ie. the Spaghetti-eating scene in the dirty bathtub - very tasteless (no pun intended)
. To each their own though.

If anyone else agrees with my views, do comment.
I can back 'Gummo' for it's visual look(the photography), I can't back it for anything else.

There's always going to be the one audience who likes seeing extreme cynicism and people doing nasty things with no point. I couldn't imagine repeated viewings of 'Gummo', that'd be peculiar to say the least.

'Kids' was graphic as well, but it had a clear point of view and there were pathos and thoughtful metaphors along the way that made it a quality film.

I haven't seen Korine's other movies. 'Julien Donkey Boy' got a recommendation by Roger Ebert and 'The Beach Bum' got a lot of favorable reviews as well.

I've never seen "Salo" or "Irreversible" but those are movies that are trying to shock/disturb the viewer - so what would be offensive? That I wasn't offended enough? So for "Gummo" I know I didn't like it - I've seen it once a long time ago, and I thought it was dumb and unpleasant, but some of that was what it was trying to be, so that's somewhat the movie's point.

I am more disturbed/offended by movies - that through no fault of their own - show the morality of their era in an unironic way that doesn't hold up (IMO).

It's been said before, but many of the teen-focused rom-coms of the 1980s use stalking, harassment, revenge porn, and date rape as comedic plot points. They aren't being "provocative," they actually believed they're being funny. So those are the movies I liked back then but today find unwatchable and "offensive."

That's where you get to each person's line - I think "Animal House" is clever but "Porky's" is gross. You say tomato.
Just a warning, this is a pretty graphic post.

Having seen Salo, what bothered me was
[Show spoiler]at least in my opinion, the book got the job done. You were shocked, you were horrified, and you were forced to take the government and the church, both of which de Sade despised, off their respective pedestals, which I believe were his intentions. While in those days it was considered horrible, slanderous, and blasphemous to think such things or make such statements, in the 200 years since he wrote the book, it's become obvious that both the governments and churches of the world needed to be taken down a few pegs.

The book got the job done, and while film adaptations of books are usually unnecessary, this one was really unnecessary. Most importantly, the book had no real children. True the readers likely imagine real children being tormented, which contributes to the horror, but there's no actual children being harmed.

Enter Pasolini, who at 41 began dating a 15-year-old boy he described as "the love of his life". After said 15-year-old eventually left Pasolini, the director filmed a scene where the then-adult was castrated on-screen.

This was not Pasolini's first encounter with children. In 1949, the then-27-year-old Pasolini was arrested for engaging in sexual misconduct with three minors aged 16 and under, causing public uproar. Clearly he had some interest in children.

I've come to the conclusion that in making Salo, Pasolini had the opportunity to make a film he himself wanted to see. Not a film with biting satire, but a film where children could act out every perverse fantasy he had, plus he would be able to call the film art and hide behind it if anyone said anything. Honestly, having seen the film once, which was one time too many for me, it's the closest I've come to watching child porn. What made it child porn in my eyes wasn't even any specific moment, or all of the film put together, but the intentions of the creator. He wanted to make a film that aroused himself, and tragically the brutal sexual abuse of teens is exactly what he wanted to see.

Whereas the book had children that literally didn't exist, and the horrible events in the book were confined to your mind, the movie took those horrible events and made them real. When you read the book, you're horrified about this event occurring in a book. When you watch the movie, you're horrified that you're actually watching the event occur with a real minor. I reached the conclusion that while de Sade's purpose in creating the book was to opine on things wrong with the government, religion, and society as a whole, Pasolini's purpose in creating the movie was to create a film he could be aroused by and to do so while weaseling around the child porn laws. (Italy has a gray area as to whether "fictionalized child porn" is illegal or not, and I believe this is the loophole he tried to take advantage of.)

When Pasolini was murdered mere weeks after the film was released in Italy, one of the things done to him was that his genitals were hit repeatedly with a metal bar until they were crushed. While most believe his death to be caused either by the Mafia or by political opponents, I'm in the minority that believes it was retaliation for both his real-life sexual contact with minors and his film.

Where criticism of the film hits a speed bump is that most of the criticism that's aimed at Pasolini instead lands on the innocent people who just wanted to watch the movie. Well over 90% of people who've seen this film wholly disagree with my assessment of the film, and of those who've seen the film well over 99% of them are normal people who aren't doing anything wrong, illegal, immoral, or the like. Most times when someone attacks the film and the filmmaker, they take the film's supporters down too, whether by accident or on purpose. There's even a notable case in the US where a Christian group called the police to a video store and claimed the store was renting child porn, and both the store's management and the one person who rented Salo on tape were arrested for child porn. (There's a lot more to the story, but it ended with all charges being dismissed and the customer and management being cleared of wrongdoing.)

Even though I honestly hate the film (it's probably the film I hate the most), and even though I hate the director, the film doesn't really reflect on the normal 99% of its viewers who aren't trying to watch child porn, they're just trying to watch a movie.

Just my two cents.

It's like the guy at the carnival sideshow who bites off chicken heads. No fun for us, no fun for the guy, no fun for the chicken.

I just made a post on Porky's and teen sex comedies on another thread. Women were there to be ogled at, harassed, and peeped on.
Porky's for me wasn't really a T&A show, even though it could easily be taken as such. It did strike me as a coming-of-age film, albeit a rather ribald one. The jokes were pretty funny, the crazy things they went through (getting chased out of a house naked, getting grabbed through a peephole, getting unceremoniously booted from a strip club) were entertaining, and their revenge was a great ending. Even when the girls stood up for them in the end, they weren't really standing up for the same boys who'd peeped at them and gawked at them for all these years, they were standing up against all the assh*les one county over who needed to be put in their place.

The movie has a plot, not an endearing or heartwarming plot, but a plot nonetheless. If you go there for the comedy you'll be entertained. If you go there for anything else you'll be disappointed.

Perhaps Criterion are waiting to see if Paramount prepares a newer master or gives them access to film elements for their own restoration. Whatever the cause, it's not likely because the idea of a BD has not occurred to them as yet.
Paramount has a weird history with the Blu-ray format, and with the DVD format too. They prepared DVD masters for many films that never got DVD releases. Little Darlings and Looking For Mr. Goodbar are two of those movies. They farmed out White Dog because of its controversy, even though the real controversy was "why doesn't Paramount release this film". (Basically, what Song Of The South is to Disney, and The Devils is to Warner Bros., White Dog is/was to Paramount.) Paramount had hundreds if not thousands of titles people were waiting for for years, and they never released them on Blu-ray and in some cases they didn't do DVDs either. (Major music rights issues like Goodbar don't count.) They've only recently started farming out deep catalog stuff to the boutiques, and almost every Paramount release is greeted by at least one person saying "what took so long".

I have no clue what's going on with White Dog. It's been "Currently Unavailable" for at least the three years I've been obsessively watching the site. Someone else gave another number. Back in 2019, when we were waiting for the Spine 1000 announcement, I was on a Kristy McNichol kick, and the film was "Currently Unavailable" then too. (Maybe it was restocked in the interim, but I'm not sure.) As far as I'm concerned, White Dog is out of print until proven otherwise.

Right now, it's between the Criterion DVD and the Eureka MoC Blu-ray for what copy you get. While a Blu-ray or 4K could happen, and there's nothing blocking it, I haven't heard a peep about it coming to Blu-ray in the US or 4K anywhere in the world.

So many instances browsing this thread recently where I was to jump to defend Gummo. But it's such a subjective experience that I completely understand why some wouldn't dig it. I love introducing it to friends and film enthusiasts in general, and before I push play I explain that, to me, this isn't a film you watch for "enjoyment" (even though technically I do, but not in that same way I would watch something like "Back to the Future") but more just to experience something different, and discuss the response to it.

When I first saw it, it didn't totally click with me. I could have easily chosen to be annoyed or frustrated by it. But I chose to try to understand it better, and wanted to listen to Harmony's thoughts on it. A lot of times when I don't understand a film I search for interviews with the director regarding it. I'd say before I fell in love with the actual film, I fell in love with Harmony's description of it, and it helped click it in to place for me.

I am a very positive, philosophical person. I typically favor films that inspire positive emotions. However, and I've come to realize this truly is a CASE-BY-CASE basis, there are a good handful of films that are often described as disturbing, nihilistic, and down right painful to give attention to, that are my all time favorites. And some movies that have those qualities that I, too, would say I cannot sit through, I do not understand the praise they receive, but art is art and I am completely against censorship.

Gummo presents images in a way that speak to me. I do see meaning, I do see magical metaphors, and most importantly, I do see beauty. I get it if others don't. Really I'd be fine if I was the only person that saw the beauty it. But I know I'm not, and I don't have to be so defensive of the film because Hey, it's getting a GD Criterion edition.
