At the end of this article about restoring Marcel Pagnol films they say that Laura Truffaut said that MGM's rights to her father's films have expired. Wouldn't shock me if those end up at Criterion in a couple of years. Maybe they can do a complete Truffaut set.

I’ve only seen two films that were based off of his novels: Jean de Florette and Manon des sources. The je t’aime/declaration scene was so good.

If you subscribe to a simpleton point of view on movies and don't enjoy a more in depth conversation about why a movie does or doesn't work or it's moral viewpoint, that's fine, but we are free to discuss what we want here.

There is no 'moral police'; you are free to watch whatever you want. There's
that old saying, 'If that what is you like, that is what you like'.

I don't find perverted behavior at another's expense by creepy men or adolescent boys to be funny.

Making a major purchase always seems to interfere with our desire to add more titles to our collections, I sure hope you enjoy the car you ended up picking out!

So Gummo gets a 4k release but there are still no Antonioni films on the format?

Normally I'd guess they must be quite confident it'll sell well if they are releasing it in 4k, but this being Criterion, who knows. I wonder how many purchases will be blind buys? Perhaps less after reading opinions of the movie here. I haven't seen Antonioni's films but they look more compelling and like higher sellers with a better reputation.

I was gonna pick up Criterion's Bound during this B&N sale, but I think I'll just hold on to my old Olive blu instead.

Fincher's 'The Killer' in 4k would be fantastic. Terrific entertainment!

You can really feel the fatality of life in the minimalistic way the music was composed.
I watched it last week. It did to me what all the best Koreeda Hirokazu movies do to me: movie ends, I sit there in silence a few seconds then start crying. It just devastated me. It's right up there, for me, with Mabarosi, Still Walking, Nobody Knows, After Life and Shoplifters. The only two weak movies he ever made were Hana and Air Doll, and both still are watchable. The former a light entertainment chambara with quite a bit of toilet humor, and the latter a movie based on a manga.

With the popularity of the TV show Shogun, I'm hoping Criterion starts looking at their samurai line up that don't have HD discs. Seven Samurai is probably coming soon to 4K, but we really need some BD upgrades as well as new to disc titles.

Some of the big ones I think are Samurai Rebellion, Kill, Samurai Spy, Sword of the Beast, Hunter in the Dark, Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron, Ronin Gai, Gonzo the Spearman, and while not "exactly" a samurai film, Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees.

Either way, more samurai films the better.

A whole samurai box set would be something special, just really go for it akin to like the Arrow Shaw sets—AND it’ll do some real catching up for DVD upgrades and stuff that never made the jump from the Channel.

Came back from Barnes and Noble and picked up the following:

Le Samourai (4K)
The Palm Beach Story
The Lady Vanishes
They Live By Night
Risky Business (4K)

The latter is a blind buy thanks to a certain someone's enthusiasm. The rest I adore!

Just happened to stroll into a local Barnes & Nobles and noticed 13 brand new copies of Risky Business. It was released today so I'm sure fans are happy and will happily "risk" their wallets.

Went to Barnes and Noble today for my final haul and ended up picking up Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 4K and Risky Business 4K. I wasn't able to get a copy of Peeping Tom on 4K because none of the stores near me had it and it was out of stock online so I will just have to wait until either the October flash sale or the November Barnes and Noble sale.

3 weeks until the next criterion release. I can't recall a gap that long being normal in their release schedule. Figured you guys would have a better memory than me

That copy of The Servant to the right brings a tear to my eyes. All the copies of Risky Business are properly aligned at least Looks like I'll be making one more trip to Barnes & Noble this sale

I suppose that is a little strange. Based on other months, one of the August releases should have been for the 6th instead. I wonder if a Janus Contemporaries title was originally planned for that date, but postponed. October doesn't have anything for the 29th (barring a JC announcement), so if November doesn't have a title come out on the 5th, we'd be looking at another 3-week gap there too.

There's usually a gap to that level going from December into January. They may be giving some of the office some time off for the summer.
