Thought Shape of Water felt like a waste til I discovered I never actually bought it.

Paper Moon is loooong overdue! Seven Samurai upgraded! That's Criterion. As for Scarface, Funny Girl, and Shape Of Water... three 4K upgrades of movies already available on fine Region A Blu-rays. That's Criterion running on fumes. I guess I just hate this era of superfluous 4K upgrades. But I hope they make a lot of money in November so they can afford to upgrade more of their DVD-only titles.

Strange month, no doubt stacked, but I own 4 of these already on blu-ray with no intention of upgrading.

Happy for the people who were waiting for Paper Moon though, that's going to be a great release.

Unlike most others, my enthusiasm for announcements is gauged by how many are new to blu-ray/4k for the first time and not by upgrades from blu-ray to 4K. This month almost all already have a blu-ray release here in the USA so my enthusiasm is not particularly high.

I own none of these in any format, and have actually only seen Paper Moon, which is a favorite. Will be getting that, Scarface, and Seven Samurai from BN in November! The latter two I’ve somehow never seen, but like the remakes.

I was hoping for at least one title that wasn’t already out on disc. These all have at least Blu-ray releases already, so while I’m happy for those looking to upgrade their collection to 4K, I’m kinda at the point in my life where I want to scratch titles off my wishlist that haven’t already seen BD/4K releases.

I mean, if I'm being honest, how many more times to I really need to buy a new copy of Godzilla? I think I'm good. I've had it on tape, then laserdisc, then DVD and now currently the Criterion Blu-ray.

Again, I'm happy for those who are upgrading or buying these for the first time, but my wallet is thanking me for passing on this upcoming batch in its entirety.

I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion saw slower-than-normal sales during this upcoming batch's release month, as I'm sure many like me won't feel compelled to keep re-buying things they've already owned multiple times.

Oh well…

They're playing catch up. Late to the 4K game while Kino got busy snapping up every MGM prestige film they could get their hands on early on. I guess all they can do for now are unnecessary upgrades. Scarface is pretty cool, though. I'm wondering if we might see another edition of the De Palma version via Arrow.

Finally, after several months with one or zero titles I’m interested in, a month where I want almost everything.

I think this is the first month I already own every single title in some other format (in Shape of Water's case, just different cover art).

I would say this does read like a "we need money" month.

Nothing super exciting for me personally this month, although I understand it's very exciting for most haha. I do want to see Paper Moon and Funny Girl though, and I love Seven Samurai/Shape of Water but already own them and don't hugely feel the need to spend the money to upgrade (but I'm sure these new editions will look fabulous).

Default Wasn't That A Time

I remember seeing Paper Moon with my mother back in 1973 and hearing her laughing out loud, along with the rest of audience for that matter, as if it were yesterday. Man, the early 70s, wasn't that a time. One of the most wanted titles for my shelf, news of a new restoration and choice supplements is all I need to know.

That said, I won't be saying no to Godzilla, Funny Girl and Scarface as November additions to my shopping cart, joining a long wish list of titles I've ticketed since Criterion's last 50% sale back in late winter.

What I will say is Godzilla would have made a great mini-set with Godzilla Minus One, both versions.

The Shape of Water is a film which I enjoyed in the theater and at home, but with the quality of the presentation and a superb steelbook, there is no pressing need to purchase it again.

Likewise, I recently re-watched the Criterion Blu-ray of The Seven Samurai, so I'm good until Criterion hopefully makes good on a Kurosawa box set.

$8 difference in price between 'seven samurai' uhd and original bd release.

can i send them the difference, or even half of it, and get the uhd disc alone?

Mind you, these are not bad or unimportant films. But when was the last month when every new-to-Criterion title was already available on Blu-ray?

I love the cover for The Shape of Water. I just adore when an image from the film is utilized…whether it’s an actual shot or an artist rendering. Same with Paper Moon.

And I do not understand how upgrading to 4K is “running on fumes”. Shape of Water I can understand the complaints though it’s very much a Wall-E situation. But a solid Blu-ray doesn’t mean they shouldn’t upgrade to 4K.

Terrible month. I hope the backlash against all these superfluous 4k upgrades gets louder.

My main wish and therefore disappointment is no Killers of the Flower Moon...really, above anything else, I just want confirmation that it is coming at some point, either from Criterion or Paramount themselves
