I guess that was more where I was going - like, what if they upgraded the Bergman set? The Olympics set? Something in massive packaging? Those are somewhat more uncharted waters, though perhaps I’m forgetting something along those lines.

It was released on UHD in France, but how many UHD units would that film realistically move in North America? Le Doulos and Bob Le Flambeur, which were both released on UHD by Kino are in a similar wheelhouse, but Melville has more cache than Sautet among anglophone film nerds.
They're still releasing BD only titles. No reason to believe they aren't still committed to BD. The only UHD only label currently is Blue Underground and that's because they have no new film licenses.

Thinking otherwise is just creating unnecessary panic.

Criterion

12/3/2024 might be a date to keep tabs on. From what I gather, it's the 40th anniversary of Criterion's first release - Citizen Kane.

We've already had a Blu-ray and UHD release for Citizen Kane through them, do we need another one?

I think they’re probably planning other titles to release that are not Citizen Kane with hopefully one of them being a laserdisc upgrade that being Dead Presidents. Also maybe all of those Alfred Hitchcock laserdisc titles upgraded to Blu-Ray that don’t have them yet. I’m talking about Secret Agent, Sabotage, and Young and Innocent. Doing a re-release of Citizen Kane would be ridiculous

They're just saying it's an anniversary date for the first Criterion release, so Criterion may be doing something on that day. Not that it's anything Citizen Kane related. To be honest, with that being the day of the first release, and it happening to be on a Tuesday, it would have been the ideal day to have released their CC40 set. I think it's only coming out in November so that it could be in the B&N sale.

I don't believe they'll do it, but a 4K UHD of the original King Kong would make the most sense if they wanted to do a laserdisc upgrade. Both a 1984 release and important milestone for the company with the first audio commentary that could easily be ported over.

What about a 4K UHD of #2 which was also released in 1984?

I think CC will do something even if it's a simple 40% off select titles.

I’d love a laser upgrade for Olivier’s Hamlet to at least blu if not 4K. It’s one of the last remaining Best Pictures I don’t own on at least blu.

Unless it starts costing less to produce UHD discs or physical media sales rise, just being one of the greats isn't justification.

The Halloween sequels are likely better sellers than the majority of Criterion's greatest films output.
All the more reason to applaud Criterion for releasing these in 4k.

Criterion did release that version of Hamlet on DVD but it's been out of print for a while.

Or spearheading what could be an interesting discussion if people didn't automatically censor something they themselves see no value in.

Although commercial and marketing potential and the money equation can't be summarily dismissed, I've always gotten the impression that Criterion uses other measures for release consideration more often than we think. I believe that if they themselves feel a film is worthy of an upgrade and they have the materials to make it happen, it will and regardless of its accessibility as a big seller.

Yes, I own it. I picked it up for free with one of my Columbia House accounts. To cut to the chase, I watched it once and I am not a fan. I watched it when I obtained it in 2012. I rated the movie as two stars and the PQ as one star. Yeah, the PQ on this DVD sucks.

I don't believe Criterion will do anything special release wise for the 40th anniversary of their Citizen Kane laserdisc release. Probably a video and a message to their customers but who knows?

Also, I was thinking of a King Kong 4K release as a potential candidate IF there is a release getting announced on that day. The recent Warner Bros. re-release for this film came out a few years ago and I heard there was a 4K scan and restoration for the film already. This is one of those few monumental classic films from its era that has yet to see a 4K release (Among many others like Gone With the Wind, for example).

Now I'd say yes. I believe they accepted more popular films to be able to put out titles like The Roaring Twenties or Werckmeister Harmonies in 4K.

Certainly a varied lineup, the latest batch of Criterion US announcements. Just the one title I would be interested in getting, Scarface (didn't get the Premium Collection UK release).
