Le Samourai is tremendous. If it’s a first time viewing for you, you’re going to love it.

The Criterion blu looked fantastic to me, but I can’t comment as to any change in color timing, as the disc served as my introduction to the film.

I’m living in the Criterion Channel right now.

Settling in to watch Spike Lee’s 25th Hour, a first-time viewing.

My Philip Seymour Hoffman study included the following:

State and Main (2000)
Love Liza (2002)
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
25th Hour (2002)
Capote (2005)
The Savages (2007)
Synecdoche, New York (2008)
Doubt (2008)
The Master (2012)

Capote, Doubt and The Master I have seen before. All the rest are first looks.

I went right from an Ethan Hawke study into Hoffman (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead being one of the nine Hawke films). Talk about a contrasting style. The Before Trilogy might be my favorite thing in the entire Criterion Collection right now.

By the way, to anybody that has not seen Paul Schrader’s First Reformed, Hawke’s performance is something else.

Watching Netflix' Ripley while on holiday, what I felt missing was PSH's Freddy Miles. I assume the film makers knew they could not compete with his definitive version, so they went elsewhere with the character. This show is more than worthy of Criterion's consideration.

I was underwhelmed by Capote, mostly because the film version of In Cold Blood is so well made and has such powerhouse performances by Robert Blake and Scott Wilson (but Paul Stewart kept the Capote character just as the chorus for the film).

One of the great privileges of my life was getting to see PSH in the famous production of Sam Shepard’s True West, where he and John C. Reilly flipped coins every night about which role they would play. The evening I saw, he played the shithead brother, and I never felt a performance radiate off an actor like that. It was so intense you could smell it.

A legend.

Someone that works for Paramount stated that they licensed Paper Moon to Criterion a long time ago. Not surprising considering it's Criterion we're tallking about, and it's been long-rumored to be with them. I suppose the silver lining here is that we almost certainly wouldn't have seen a 4K release, or even a BD from a newer 4K restoration if Criterion didn't sit on it so long. I think we can say the same about many other "shelf warmers™" like The Roaring Twenties, and Pat Garrett too. Very likely for the inevitable eventual release of Captain Blood as well.

That's the same guy who said maybe two years ago that A Simple Plan was licensed to "good people" or something along those lines. I'm starting to almost think it's certainly with Criterion now.

The premise for The Stranger and the Fog sounds really intriguing to me. I'm wondering if Criterion will release it as a standalone title, or as part of a future WCF set.

I just noticed Janus also posted a new trailer for it yesterday too. Loving the haunting visuals in it.

Honestly even though it's nice to have movies like Roaring Twenties and Paper Moon reach 4K I'd gladly have taken them on regular degular Blu-ray ten years ago.

And if it most likely is then we’re probably not going to get it till early next year, or most likely next month. I kind of figured a Simple Plan was with Criterion just like Paper Moon was so it’s probably our next big Paramount title from Criterion.

THE STRANGER AND THE FOG - 4K Restoration Trailer - YouTube
I genuinely wonder that as well.

I feel like Janus was promoting Chess of the Wind and Taipei Story, for example, as much as they have been promoting this one. But both of those films are locked behind the box set. Meanwhile, The Color of Pomegranates and The Cloud-Capped Star received standalone releases.

We are overdue for another box set. And these films have all been credited with Janus recently.

The Boys from Fengkuei
Eight Deadly Shots
Lumumba: Death of a Prophet
Pickpocket
Le Sénégal et le Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres

I think a lot of titles have been pushed back multiple times. Had this been released a decade ago, it would have been a 2K remaster from an interpositive. Even a few years ago, it would have been just a 4K transfer/2K remaster from the camera negative. Now it's feasible for an actual 4K UHD with a full 4K restoration.

I assume that has contributed to some of the delays. Redoing the restorations in 4K and, if necessary, renegotiating UHD rights.

This year they've had some of the most adventurous picks for 4K debuts like the Lewton double feature, I Am Cuba, Werckmeister Harmonies, the Albert Brooks films, Gummo, and Scarface '32.

Werckmeister Harmonies is a phenomenal film I watched it this month, and now consider to be one of my favorite films of all time it’s that good. I’m very excited about the Albert Brooks films, Scarface 32, Paper Moon, Happiness, and the Lewton double feature, along with Demon Pond too, and Pandoras Box.

I noticed a few Criterions are 50% on Amazon right now. I saw The Blob, Videodrome, and The Roaring Twenties, and I’m sure there are more.

So since Criterion has a deal with Disney with the Fox Searchlight titles what other titles do you think they'll put out? Spirit of the Beehive, Blood and Wine, Girl 6, Shes Gotta Have it, and Banshees are all possibilities now which wasn't the case previously. I hope this eventually opens the floodgates for Touchstone, and Hollywood Pictures Titles like Alive, Dead Presidents, and The Program. This is pretty big news, and I'm glad it wasn't a coincidence at all so what other Fox Searchlight titles will we get next?
