Robinson Crusoe on Mars is $22.46.

EDIT: A lot more: Amazon — Criterion Collection It’s Amazon’s own personal B&N deal.

And I doubt we'll see any of the Lubitsch or Fuller movies they have under license will make it to 4k despite the long wait.

Yes, but cost and sales potential do still play a part. Barry Jenkins mentioned in an interview that there were talks about doing a UHD for The Underground Railroad but they decided that it was too expensive.

Of course, UR on UHD would be a 3-4 disc SKU and that's definitely expensive.

I hope this eventually opens the floodgates for Touchstone, and Hollywood Pictures Titles like Alive, Dead Presidents, and The Program. This is pretty big news, and I'm glad it wasn't a coincidence at all so what other Fox Searchlight titles will we get next?
Spirit of the Beehive is with Disney? It has the Janus logo on the Criterion Channel.

How reliable is the news the Disney/Fox vault is now open though? All of Us Strangers and The Shape of Water are both directed by avowed Criterion Stans who would likely push hard for any of their films to be released by the label.

Regarding titles like Paper Moon and Werckmeister Harmonies, there are loads of Criterion Blu-ray titles that I’m sure would be tough sells on UHD largely because solid Blu-rays have been readily available for so long that only so many people would be willing to upgrade them to UHD at this point. This is probably the case with stuff like Hiroshima, Mon Amour or even L’Avventura and Two-Lane Blacktop. Seven Samurai is a popular enough title that there’s a large enough built-in market for a UHD release, especially considering it’s a newer master than what’s on the Blu-ray.

Had Criterion released WH on Blu-ray in 2016 or something I doubt it would have gotten a UHD release at this point, but since I Am Cuba and WH hadn’t been available on English-friendly Blu-ray at all before the UHD announcement, there’s probably a sizable enough demographic that would go “what the heck, why not spend a few bucks more for the premium format.”

My hunch is the UHD of the Apu Trilogy did not sell well at all, considering Amazon was at one point selling it for slightly less than the Blu-ray version.

Strange that Criterion hasn't updated the screenshots on the Godzilla page like they usually do for new releases from different scans/restorations.

As far as Fox stuff on Criterion, The Namesake would be nice and would add to the couple of Mira Nair films already in the collection. It was not released by Fox on Blu-ray back in the day either.

Whoops my bad on Spirit of the Beehive that’s not by Fox Searchlight at all, but by a Spanish production company instead so not Fox. I have a strong feeling we’re getting that title next year though as Criterion is putting out more Spanish and Brazilian films lately on Blu-Ray so I think this one will be next.

Probably not. It also sold out when James Caan died and came back.
