So presumably this also means that any BD for Seven Samurai will also be the old BD that has been described here as a DVD master. And I assume the release of Le Samourai has the old BD that has been criticized for excessive DNR.

Is there any planet on which this makes sense? Or am I missing something?

The previous Criterion BD of Le Samourai does not have excessive DNR, but it is based on the same old master that was presumably used for their DVD. But as per their site description the 4UHD+BD bundle will have the 4K resto used on both discs.

Criterion has released some films owned by Mosfilm in the last few years, I wonder if they still have a deal with them considering the current political situation. They released "I Am Cuba" just earlier this year, so it seems to me that they got the rights to some Mosfilm productions before the war and are just sitting on them, in typical Criterion fashion.

Soy Cuba / I am Cuba was licensed from Milestone Films, not Mosfilm.

Thanks for the info, so it seems that Criterion doesn't release any Mosfilm since 2021, right? If so, it seems pretty clear that they will not be licensing from Mosfilm again any time soon. Oh well, one day I'll get my Sergei Eisenstein box set LOL

Criterion now is the perfect time to announce Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Eric Bogosian’s SubUrbia! He has so many newer fans due to his role on Interview With The Vampire! So release it! Please!!!

Good news, Janus has added a new page for Michelangelo Antonioni's Il Grido (1957).

https://www.janusfilms.com/films/2224

Quote:
Years before L’avventura, his international breakthrough, Michelangelo Antonioni crafted his first masterpiece with Il grido, a raw expression of anguish that remains one of Italian cinema’s great underappreciated gems. Bridging Antonioni’s early, neorealism-inspired work and his hallmark stories of existential rootlessness Il Grido centers on Aldo (Steve Cochran), a sugar-refinery worker in the Po Valley. When Irma (Alida Valli), his lover of seven years, learns that her estranged husband has died abroad, Aldo hopes ey can finally marry. These plans are ruined, however, when Irma declares she’s fallen in love with another man. Shocked and demoralized, Aldo leaves town with his daughter, Rosina (Mirna Girardi), and attempts to woo an old girlfriend (Betsy Blair), only to find himself rebuffed. As Aldo continues to drift through the Po’s small villages, his prospects dwindle and his connections with other women—including a gas-station owner (Dorian Gray) and a sex worker (Lyn Shaw)—fizzle out into alienation and despair. Strikingly composed and boldly using environment to convey character—like Antonioni’s later classics—Il Grido reveals a director in the process of discovering his artistic signature and applying it to this most personal of statements about the human condition.

I know and I have been wanting it too! I was a teenage Bogosian! It’s one of the movies I sent to Criterion! I also want Tape, but I feel like that would be a special feature for another Linklater film.

Bill Hunt’s newsletter had a report on the state of Paramounf home video after the huge spate of layoffs. (It’s pretty depressing.) While no one knows what will happen for sure after this winter, he mentions that Paramount controls much of Miramax’s catalog and mentions this:

“What I do know for sure is that at least one popular Miramax title has been licensed to Criterion for 4K and Blu-ray release, so that’s likely coming before the end of the year or early next. (Clue: It’s a coin toss.) And more may follow in 2025.”

It’s got to be No Country he’s hinting at, right?

Will the All That Money Can Buy (1941) blu-ray ever get restocked on Amazon? All the other retailers seem to have it stock but them.

Next month will be a Criterion one day flash sale. You can pick up All That Money Can Buy from them at 50% off and start collecting some points for future purchases. No need to wait for Amazon to restock it...

I don’t know what the hell’s going on with them. I bought it from them in June for 50 percent off, before the B&N sale. I got it - very delayed - at the end of July but it was smashed to bits in a ruined envelope. I sent it back for a replacement and now we’re into September.

Here's my ideal, fairly realistic, self Christmas present wish list for December:

First time releases for Criterion (I would want them all in 4K)
Talk to Her / Hable con Ella
Wake In Fright
Color of Money (I know it's with Disney, but I don't think that makes it impossible)
Baraka + Samsara

(4K upgrades of previously released Criterion titles)
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Sid & Nancy

Fingers crossed, hope at least one of these comes true !

God all of those would be amazing but too good to be true for a December lineup

For those who haven't seen it, Almodovar's Talk to Her is amazing

Patiently waiting for the Wake in Fright 4K in the US. Chances may be that Umbrella may also release it in the US since they are now a partner label with Vinegar Syndrome.
