It looks like no BD until 2026. It appears that the new 4k restoration is only going to have theatrical engagements until then.

In celebration of our fortieth anniversary, Criterion has built a replica of our famous film closet inside an eighteen-foot delivery van, and later this month, we’ll be taking our Criterion Closet Picks show on the road.

Stocked with more than 1,500 of the greatest films from around the world, the Criterion Closet may offer more cinematic inspiration per square foot than any place on the planet.

Since 2010, when Guillermo del Toro first allowed us to film him choosing a few discs from the closet, nearly two hundred filmmakers, stars, and movie-loving luminaries of all kinds have come to our offices and championed the films they love in our popular Criterion Closet Picks video series.

Now film fans all over America will be able to have their own Criterion Closet experiences and record their own Closet Picks videos as the mobile closet makes its way around the country.

The mobile Criterion Closet will make its debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall during the opening and centerpiece weekends of the 62nd New York Film Festival, September 28–29 and October 5–6.

On an ongoing basis, we will be partnering with film festivals, arts institutions, and other cultural organizations to bring the Criterion Closet to more and more communities. Watch this space for more location announcements.

can someone explain to me what the point is of the mobile closet? I mean sure I like their videos as anyone else. But thats because they are actors/directors picking their favorite picks. Here its just average joe's and taking selfies? really thats it? can they take free discs with them?

Have you never dreamed of visiting the closet? Plenty of people on here, and around the world surely have (myself included). So this is Criterion's way of bringing that sort of experience to the public. It's no doubt being used as a vehicle (literally) for marketing/branding too. I'm sure there will be giveaways/promotions that coincide with it as well.

Aside from them giving the titles for free, I don't see why anyone would want to seek it out. You can get (unless maybe OOP) every single title online, in B&N, etc. It's fun for the videos of director's actors, etc. But I can't imagine the draw of it personally.

I don't see a regular Joe going in and picking out Salo and wanting to buy it for 40 bucks.

With all the Hideo Gosha films Film Movement is releasing, I REALLY hope Criterion gets on the ball and starts releasing the films they are holding hostage on their channel.

All of them are good, but Hunter in the Dark is the one I really want. Such an amazing film, but I'd take any of them at this point.

Saw this on reddit, but not sure where this was originally mentioned. Criterion Closet visitors can get titles there at 40% off, get a signed Polaroid pic, and a free tote bag.

edit: Found it. It comes from IndieWire's article:

https://www.indiewire.com/news/gener...20the%20closet.

Of you, signed by you. That, and the tote are just a way of them emulating the closet visiting experience.

This isn't too different from other pop-up events/venues that happen in NYC and elsewhere. A year or two ago there was one for Stranger Things in Times Square that sort of emulated the various settings of the show. I get that some don't get it, or don't care for it, but I think these kinds of experiences are pretty cool.

This looks like fun. There could be some added excitement if there are some Out-of-print titles in the truck.

I will definitely be looking to do this at NYFF. I would imagine the line will be long with every film Twitter bro coming for it too.

It's a gimmicky marketing experience, guys. Not sure why people are overthinking this. If it doesn't appeal to you that's fine, it's not intended to move mass quantities of merchandise or create a new distribution model. It's to promote the CC40 box set with an eye-catching vehicle and give fans a chance to experience going "in the closet" themselves, including the photo and tote bag.

No hard feelings to anyone that isn't interested, but there are plenty of folks that will think this is a cool idea (including me).
