Would love to see the Hiroshi Shimizu films on blu. The Japanese Society and Museum of the Moving Image in NYC just did a retrospective.

The Eureka LE was my first time viewing this masterpiece and I have wanted a revisit ever since. However, the unwatched stack has needed love too, so Pandora's Box had to wait. The upgrade in video of this release makes it a must own and it will once again sit upon the unwatched stack, where it might just sneak it's way to the top. Much to the chagrin of many other recent acquisitions.

Can you think of any other fictional character who is so identified with his fictional occupation that it seems impossible we never once saw him engaged in that occupation?

As a lover of small and specialized museums around the world, that festival in Brooklyn sounds like a must see for me! Thanks for bringing it to my attention, MF!

Sorry, I wanted to re-do the picture a bit so I deleted the post, but not quickly enough haha. I believe they have this vintage bus festival every year around the same time. It's just for that day only, but the actual official NY Transit Museum in Brooklyn is also a great museum as well (they also have a smaller annex in Grand Central station). This is my first time going to the bus festival, and it was amazing. Huge turn-out, but great for kids and adults, and the surrounding area by the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges are beautiful to walk around, and take pictures. Should make for a great backdrop for the mobile Criterion Closet.

FWIW, region-free releases in other regions don’t at all prevent releases in other regions. If anything, for a label that releases everything available in both UK/US, it implies that the rights were unattainable in the US. This could be due to a future release from another label or a myriad of other reasons such as the cost of a license for a region, a different licensor all together, or a label squatting on the rights (as Criterion often does due to their immense library and modest release schedule).

I’m also getting the sense Criterion’s current policy is if a film has a 4K master it’s either a UHD release or no release at all. They’re seem reluctant from here on out to go Blu-ray only on anything with a 4K master, and I can’t see there being a market for Il Posto on UHD. Unless they decide to start a new “Janus Classics” line for films like Il Posto and all those Naruse, Chahine, Eustache, and Rivette films they may be sitting on.

They didn't give any explanation whatsoever.

With Lost in Translation, all I know was that it took a while for Kino to get Sofia Coppola's approval of the 4K master so I wonder if that is the reason. I also heard from someone that Coppola's team and Kino's met up recently and that the meeting didn't go well but that's just from one person so I don't rely on this reason but still consider it as a possibility.

We know for a fact Coppola met with Kino recently, that was mentioned on one of Kino's podcasts. That the only news out of that meeting was the cancellation of the release means we can safely conclude the meeting didn't go well.
