Technically, we don't know if that meeting happened. Tarzi set they were setting up a short meeting:

It's entirely possible plans for such meeting fell through, they cancelled it, etc... It could be the straw that broke the camel's back, and Kino were just tired of the runaround, and cancelled the release. We really won't know exactly what transpired unless the Kino Insider elaborates further here.

I'm going to bet that Lost in Translation sees a Criterion 4K release sometime in 2025 now that Kino is out. I would think Coppola would want this seeing her The Virgin Suicides 4K Criterion release is superb.

My predictions for some Criterion releases based on new 4k prints doing the rounds...

Gilda 4K
Blow Up 4k
Midnight Cowboy 4k
Sean Baker at a London screentalk today that I attended said he'd just finished doing extras for Prince Of Broadway for Criterion
Third Man 4K (depending on Lionsgate)
Young Frankenstein 4K (not entirely out of the realms)

Seems to be taking a long time. Maybe they're planning it for Halloween 2025.

Watched the Criterion release of Demon Pond and what an amazing release it is. 2024 was probably the year where I bought the least amount of new Criterion titles ever, but the ones I did buy made up for the lack of quantity with quality, including this film. I'm glad Criterion took a chance in not only releasing this on Blu-ray, but 4K.

The film itself almost feels like a dream. The first act is pretty straight forward and logical, but it goes a bit bananas in the second act and goes with a bonkers third act to end everything in a way you wouldn't expect, but not surprising either. After all these years, I still don't know what to quite make of the ending, but it's a beautiful ride getting to that point.

A man returning from his Summer break, decides to stop at a location called Demon Pond, in a village suffering from a drought. He finds his friend who has been "missing" for three years, who has taken upon himself to ring the village bell three times a day, otherwise a flood will come in and kill all 80,000 villagers. Throw in his mysterious wife, Yokai, some pretty cool practical effects, and crazy superstitious blood seeking villagers, and you have a recipe for something interesting.

PQ is top notch, although it does have a few blemishes here and there, couple of special features, and just wish they could have gotten a Shinoda interview. Overall, a great release, and hope it sells well enough so maybe we can get more Shinoda films including my faovrite Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees.

I hope we get some more Arnaud Desplechin this Monday! Especially, My Sex Life... or How I Got into an Argument!

Also would love a Jean Eustache set announcement!

Most importantly Tuesday is the 15th the day the announcements are supposed to happen every month. I messed up my days.

Wow! That's a really big village!

Nevertheless, it does sound very interesting. Thanks for your description, Duke. I'm definitely going to get this.

Haha. The village honestly looks like it's only 200 people at all times, but they say 80,000 about 10 times, so not sure what's up with that. At no point does it look like they are even close to being 80,000.

Aren’t the Criterion Blu-rays of Blow Up and Midnighy Cowboy already 4K-sourced.

I think they were hoping for this October, but that obviously didn't happen. I think he mentioned Mati Diop was in their offices working on the release the same day (October 3rd) that Isabelle Huppert was there. So I would assume that they aren't going to hold it for October 2025, but they could.

The restorations are 4K, but the discs themselves are not 4K.

Yes, I only meant to say I don’t think there’s a newer restoration for Blow Up than what was used for Criterion’s Blu-ray. Perhaps it was simply that same restoration debuting in a new territory.

Looks like 4 years ago, Criterion prioritized the flash sale over the announcements.

October 15 was the flash sale.
October 16 was the announcements of The Fugitive Kind, Fail Safe, Le Petit Soldat, All About My Mother, and Holiday.

Will they do it again?

Let's hope.

This week seems more likely than next week. They usually like to set it on a date that have major new releases, and I think with Demon Pond and Pandora's Box upgrade tomorrow, it would be an ideal date.

Usually we get an e-mail blast announcement the evening before at around 4pm L.A. We'll see later.

I watched it this weekend too and I think I need to give it another go before formulating an opinion on the movie itself. I can't believe this is the same director of Pale Flower! One thing about Demon Pond that I loved was the music, it's kind of intoxicating and drew me into the world completely. However the turn of events in the back half of the movie its absolutely nuts and I couldn't believe what I was seeing The costume and set design totally surprised me. It's like TMNT meets An Actor's Revenge

The 15th was a Sunday last year. Don't they always wait until Monday when the 15th falls on a weekend?
