An absolute out-of-the-blue surprise.

The Winchester '73 release is so "2020s Criterion" coded. They sit on the title for over a decade, keeping an HD disc absent from the North American market all through the Blu-ray era and well into the 4K era, and when they finally release it there is only one (1) new bonus feature and it's not about the movie but about the portrayal of Native Americans in the western genre at large. Gimme a break. Happy it's here at last I guess.

Holy shit, Winchester 73! About frigging time! This and Captain Blood have been the two titles I feel like i've waited forever haha.
Cool about Yojimbo and Sanjuro but I really wished we'd get the other Kurosawa titles most of us have been waiting more than a decade for. Still, pretty damn cool month!

Winchester will pair nicely with my WAC Naked Spur and TT Man From Laramie. Hope sony issues a UHD of Man From Laramie soon.

In for Yojimbo/Sanjuro as well. The latter needed a much better release than the old master provided.

I think someone said Ikiru is next for 2025, which is my favorite Kurosawa film so I wouldn’t be surprised if we finally see the other titles get released for the first time on Blu-Ray for 2025. Anyways, Jojo Dancer is a big grab for Criterion, and it has been one I have been wanting on Blu-Ray for so long. Same with Winchester 73, and the Grifters is a very underrated 90s film so excited for that as well. Gosh January 2025 is a great start for Criterion, and I’m really happy for them as well as the fact that I’ll be buying four of these five titles they announced.

I would do anything to see the 4K restoration in theaters. I am really hoping it comes to the Belcourt at some point. Hands down one of the greatest films I have ever seen, and itching to get the 4K Blu-Ray once it is announced.

Yojimbo and Sanjuro are among my favorite Kurosawa movies of all time! Can't wait to see them in 4K!

So happy to see the Kurosawa upgrades coming in at a steady pace. Hopefully they pull Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, or Kagemusha next. On the other hand getting some of the yet released ones like Stray Dog or The Bad Sleep Well would be great too.

Winchester '73 is Criterion's biggest and most important announcement in a very long time. Incredible! So excited!

(They have been releasing many great classics in the last few months, but most of the best were international titles which we could be almost certain would be getting a UHD eventually.)

Awesome to see Winchester ‘73! Excited about The Grifters too, even if that cover is extremely uninspired.

To be honest thought it was “The Bling Ring” at first because it’s really close to this poster art for it.

But yeah, stoked on Winchester as well.

All plastic cases. Y/S 4K release should be identical to the BD release in terms of packaging.

I'll add Yojimbo/Sanjuro to the list of upgrades to do during a future 50% sale (or maybe I'll wait for a potential Kurosawa 4K boxset)

Other than that nothing for me in January (my wallet needs the break)

Since they’re doing Richard Pryor films I could honestly see them doing Greased Lightnin at some point if not WAC themselves and Moving too. I think Richard Pryor films definitely deserve the Criterion treatment, and them doing both remaining Pryor titles that don’t have Blu-Rays yet where he's the lead in the film doesn’t sound out of the realm of possibility now. That being said, yes Jojo Dancer man been wanting this title to get released on Blu-Ray for so long.

THE GRIFTERS is great. I've managed to avoid the various "Blu-ray" releases of it in the past, fearing that those were simply upconverts from the old DVD. I'm sure that the Criterion will be a legitimate Blu-ray transfer.

USA Today's Criterion US announcements

Just Winchester '73 out of today's Criterion US announcements that I'm interested in (this I don't mind at all, as I have a long-ish want list of Criterion US and UK Blu-ray titles I want to get (hoping HMV do a sale during this autumn, although I may get a title or two off Deep Discount).

One thing I always wondered about when the Criterion release came out, is wether they would get the rights to the James Stewart commentary which was listed as an "interview" on the Dvd (I will never forget how exited I was to find out that it was actually a commentary!). It is great and I'm very happy they were able to include it. Just like with Freaks, this release alone for me means Criterion has not just had a great month but a great year!

And I couldn't agree more with the highlighted quote above. It's truly maddening. Fortunately, for me, the amount of must have titles they have the rights to is getting smaller and smaller...
