Rookie question- but does anyone know the general logic around who does and doesn't get that email? Is it anyone with a Criterion account, or is there some sort of purchase frequency that needs to be met?

I get it because I’m a Criterion Channel subscriber.

I'm a Criterion Channel subscriber and I don't get the codes. I contacted them about this back in March and they kindly emailed me a code! I'll probably do the same this time.

Thinking about picking up The Golden Age of Television DVD set. Anyone have thoughts on this one? One time watch or solid add to a collection? Do you think an upgrade would come out at some point?

What time does the flash sale usually start? Is it midnight or some later time during the day?

I am not a Criterion Channel subscriber, but I am on the e-mail list and get the code every sale, but usually not until the night before. Check your e-mails Monday evening. My guess is Criterion Channel subscribers get the notification earlier than the e-mail list.

It is definitely a solid box-set. I blind-borrowed from my local library and loved it so much that I bought a copy for myself. All of the programs on it are excellent and it really opened my eyes to the early pioneering days of live television dramas. The only downside is all the films sourced from kinescopes meaning they are shot off of a television monitor as it is being broadcast so the image-quality is not that great by nature. Unless there are better source materials out there besides this, an upgrade is highly unlikely. A number of the programs in the box-set are on YouTube so you give them a watch first.

Here is an excellent review with screenshots: https://www.criterionforum.org/Revie...collection-dvd

  • Farewell My Concubine
  • Blue Velvet

Since I use Stackry, I also have a couple of non-Cs on the way: Arbelos versions of Sátántangó and Twlight, and To Rome with Love (the US version is the only fully English friendly release, I believe).
Sátántangó and Twlight are fantastic choices. You won't regret it—waited years for Twilight to be rescued from anonymity.

I have close to $100 in Criterion Gift Cards ready to spend on the flash sale.

I have it and it's fascinating; truly incredible writing, albeit not always backed up with production values given the early days of television. Still though, for anyone who loves excellent writing and beautiful dialog you can't go wrong with this set. Given the limitations of the original source materials it's hard to imagine this set will ever be upgraded to Blu or beyond. The most you would gain out of that would be less discs as the technical quality would not improve very much, if at all.

Really, it's a great set and as good as television has gotten again in the past 20 years, you still will never see the likes of these Golden Age writers again. Having it all in one collection will add a lot to your library as these are all unlikely prospects for ever streaming and being immediately accessible sure beats searching for good watchable copies on YouTube.

Great set, I'd just go ahead and buy it since I can't imagine it being a priority to upscale, much like Fishing with John and Tanner '88.

with Criterion getting into UHD, it’d be a good time for UHDs of Fantastic Mr. Fox & Isle of Dogs
