Time will tell if they do so or if they’ll sit on the physical rights like they’ve done with Kinuyo Tanaka and much of Mikio Naruse.

I know Antonioni’s a household name, but this is one of his more obscure films, so I can’t see it moving many 4K units. Time will tell though I guess.

On that note, do Criterion also have the UK rights for it?
I mean, it looks like Janus has the rights so it's more likely than not.

For sure. My question is mainly will they sit on it or not as they’re wont to do.

I’ll admit a side of me isn’t looking forward to playing the upgrade game with all the classic Janus stuff, especially since two years ago I wouldn’t have expected any of this to make it to UHD anyway (I.e. all the Bresson, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Antonioni, Tarkovsky, some of the WCP titles, deep catalog Fellini and Godard, etc). Upgrading the occasional heavy hitter, Criterion or not, like North by Northwest or Eyes Wide Shut (when it happens) is one thing. And I’ve already preordered 8 1/2.

As cool as all the releases for the next few months are, there is one major disappointment.

  1. Godzilla - Toho didn't do an HDR pass
  2. Seven Samurai - Toho didn't do an HDR pass
  3. Yojimbo/Sanjuro - Toho didn't do an HDR pass
  4. Scarface - Universal didn't do an HDR pass
  5. Funny Girl - Has HDR/DV
  6. Shape of Water - Has HDR
  7. Paper Moon - Has HDR/DV
  8. Paris, Texas - Has HDR/DV
  9. No Country for Old Men - Has HDR/DV
  10. 8 1/2 - The 2019 restoration did not have an HDR pass
  11. Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling - Has HDR/DV
  12. The Grifters - Has HDR/DV
  13. Winchester '73 - Universal didn't do an HDR pass
  14. The Mother, and the Wh0re - the restoration didn't have an HDR pass.

So 7 of the upcoming 14 releases have HDR. 5 out of the 7 without come from just 2 studios. Criterion won't add HDR to a restoration that didn't have one, so blame Toho and Universal for the missing ones on those masters.

It is a valid point. Whether it is the studios’ or Criterion’s fault, I would like the best possible experience when it comes to the visuals if I am paying a premium price. Some of these films I have purchased three times already.

To be clear, I’m not blaming Criterion per se. UHD as a format is climbing a steep enough hill as is, and more and more releases are coming out minus an HDR grade, which is probably the reason that people upgrade. It’s especially important for older films where the elements aren’t necessarily in the best condition and the resolution bump isn’t really there. If they want people to upgrade to 4K there needs to be more reason. If I update my Seven Samurai Blu-ray it’ll be to the BFI edition. I’m not paying extra for (relatively) not much. I’ll probably pick up Scarface and the two other Kurosawas in the future, but the incentive to buy them over the Blu-rays is severely cut down.

I do think it's nice to have HDR/DV where available, but I'm not sure it's the be-all, end-all when it comes to 4K. I think there are numerous examples out there without HDR that show a marked improvement over the Blu-ray release. Similarly there are some cases where the inclusion of HDR made the film look a little worse. But yeah, I agree with your point. and I've suggested people get the BFI release of Seven Samurai over the CC release because of the HDR/DV option there.

What about subtitles on foreign language films? I find HDR subtitles without luminance adjustments to be unwatchable. We shouldn't have to own a certain model player in order to enjoy foreign language films in HDR. For me this is a huge issue that needs to be addressed. Until then I applaud all foreign language film released in SDR.

Forget about HDR, how about some HG! Hideo Gosha that is. With so many labels releasing his films, it would be nice if Criterion some of the ones they have, as they have some of his essentials like Hunter in the Dark which I consider to be the 4th best Japanese film of all time.

Have you ever tried watching a foreign language film in HDR? The brightness of the subtitles will ruin the experience. Hope you have a Panasonic UB820.

Do any previously released Criterions suffer from this?
