I don't know. I think the main reason Criterion "stole" these titles away from Kino is, first and foremost, for them to have no competition in having the best releases of these movies on the Region A market.

Finally watched Risky Business for the first time earlier today. (Directors Cut)
My only disappointment is the fact that I hadn't seen it sooner.
That Tangerine Dream score, chefs kiss.

2) All of the going OOP 4k titles come from one deal and none of the later MGM deals have had any 4k releases with Criterion BD releases. Meaning Criterion has probably already stepped in to prevent anything like this from happening again.
3) They were all excellent sellers, according to KL Insider, meaning that this wasn't why the rights weren't renewed.
4) The KL Insider said that they were very close to releasing a Kubrick boxset with the three MGM Kubricks before losing the rights. Confirming that Kino losing the rights was quite unexpected and not their choice.
5) KL Insider said that it "should be pretty obvious whose choice it was". Which, as we've established, was not their choice and would be a weird statement if it was referring to MGM, who lets them renew titles all the time (how long has On the Beach been in print?) They use similar phrasing for Criterion when talking about titles that they are not able to license because Criterion has the rights.
Kino still has Some Like It Hot and The Silence of the Lambs.

The one thing I know about MGM and licensing is that when Twilight Time was in their prime they kept pushing Nick Redman to release the licensed titles faster than they were doing. They wanted their titles on the market sooner than later. We all know how notoriously slow Criterion is. So unless Criterion is going to do a big bulk release of these, I do not see the reasoning behind pulling titles from a label that is has existing skus already, just to have them be unavailable for an unknown period to eventually release the under a different label. But who knows, nothing in the world makes sense anymore.

Some Like It Hot is going OOP as well. The Silence of the Lambs staying in print might have something to do with having a BD disc included, but we don't know for sure.

My bad, I did not see that Some Like it Hot was on this list. I guess we will see what happens. Makes no difference to me, I have all except Dressed to Kill, and in some cases the I still have the Criterion Blu-ray.

I've basically combined my Criterion BD and Kino UHD releases with 2-Disc Scavano cases, so I'm far less interested in Criterion UHD releases of those titles at this point.

Doesn't look like announcements are coming today. But surprised they didn't announce a delay on their social media accounts like they usually do.

Ha I do the same! The music really completes the film. Hypnotic. I can't find one fault with Risky Business.

I never do this, but I feel like I might as well post what I'd like to see for Monday's announcement. Would be cool if any of these were released on Criterion.

Magnolia
Suburbia
Eyes Wide Shut
25th Hour
Killing Zoe

What can I say? I love the 90s!

I'd rather see labels with smaller backlog of titles release the studio upgrade titles on 4K. Criterion just has simply too much to waste time on titles that could be coming from elsewhere. Other labels at this point have better features, encodes, etc than Criterion now, the only thing they don't have is the same resources and the thousand of so titles Criterion got the rights to bloat up their streaming channel versus putting priority on the physical market.

Again, I'd rather they focus less on the studio stuff that could be released by anyone versus the titles they have that CAN'T be released by anyone as only they have the rights to those titles.
Since you mentioned a Coen Brothers film, no other labels have produced better special editions of their films than Criterion's because Criterion has been the only one to get them to sit for new interviews. So in that case I'd prefer they continue to license their films over Kino or [insert boutique label].

Duke won't want to hear this, and I don't mean to offend, but I honestly believe waiting for Criterion to release some of their deeper catalog of Japanese titles is tantamount to Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin. If Criterion didn't see the point of even releasing most of them through the Eclipse series in DVD days, then it seems extremely less likely that they would see any viability in releasing them now. That's even independent of the fact that a great deal of them are in need of newer/better restorations. And now with the shift to 4K, it's even less likely than it was during the height of Blu-ray.

Yeah, if their Three Outlaw Samurai release had sold like crazy, they would have done more of the Hideo Gosha titles by now.

I do wish that they'd stop dripping titles out one at a time when they have massive chunks of a director's filmography. (The Itami films, the Eustache films, the Tanaka films, etc should have been boxed up.)
