Yep sadly the film has been stuck on VHS for years, and even now is the only way to watch it still physically at least. Although, I found the film on YouTube, and it’s a brilliant movie that surprisingly has not interested Criterion whatsoever, and I don’t know why. There was a big restoration 4-5 years ago at a theater that was a pretty private screening that was hard to get to, but since then there’s been no physical Blu-Ray in sight in the present day, which is a shame as it’s basically been forgotten about these days. I guess Criterion finds this film somehow a bit too weird to put out which is ridiculous considering they put out much weirder titles than this one.

I honestly have no idea who owns the rights to the film, but it saddens me that the last release of this film physically was VHS.

Yeah the premise is very unique and it also starred the director himself as the main character.

I'd be happy with any of the following:

Eyes Wide Shut
M (Joseph Losey, 1951)
A View from the Bridge (Sidney Lumet, 1957)
Return of the Secaucus Seven or Eight Men Out
A Perfect Couple (Robert Altman)
Blood and Roses (Roger Vadim, 1960)
High and Low (more readable subtitles)
Wise Blood (Blu-ray or 4K upgrade)

Feels more like something I'd see VS putting out really.

Yeah I think I might suggest this to VS they would probably be interested in this title since Criterion has no interest in a title like this, but VS likes stuff like this sounds like a good idea to me.

I'm sure there's exceptions, but that's my general perception.
Most boutique labels wouldn't do that but Criterion has been known to sit on licensed movies for a long time before releasing them. I can definitely see them holding off on a Brazil 4K to release it on the anniversary.

Nothing. I was just saying it's one of the rare instances they actually do upgrade the BD, except this one is actually good haha

The new BFI release of High and Low is BD only but according to reports is a major improvement on the Criterion, so what we need is a UHD (since BFI aren't doing one).

My wants are the same as ever:
  • A Canterbury Tale
  • I Know Where I'm Going!
  • Zabriskie Point
  • Stray Dog (if they can do a UHD)

The reason BFI only put out BDs of the 4K restorations of HIGH AND LOW and STRAY DOG is because unlike SEVEN SAMURAI and YOJIMBO/SANJURO, they didn't feel anything regarding HDR/DV capabilities warranted spending the extra money (similar to THE RULES OF THE GAME), which is smart IMO. This is another reason why I maintain Criterion should regularly upgrade their preexisting Blu-Ray discs instead of recycling older discs with their 4K upgrades.

For example, considering DAYS OF HEAVEN was OOP for a few years before Criterion put out the 4K, wouldn't it have made sense to also release an upgraded 2K Blu-Ray disc with the new 4K restoration instead of recycling the dated older one plagued with artificial sharpening and edge enhancement?

Since I'm never right, I'm going with reverse psychology this month. I predict Criterion will not release Basquiat, Little Children, and The Bad Sleep Well.

My work here is done.

I won't be mad if they announce a Scorsese and/or a Wes Anderson film. Or two. Or three.

The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar And Three More is surely around the corner. (Then again we all thought that about The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.)

I'd love Anora, the Sean Baker set, and a Wes Anderson. I've been wanting Killers of the Flower Moon too, but I relented and imported the Italian version recently, so I am fiending for that less. Not sure I'd even replace it with a Criterion one! I'd also like Pepe le moko.

My wants every month are usually mostly contemporary (except Pepe), and the beauty of Criterion is that they put out so many older films that I've never even heard of, I get my horizons expanded that way. So many times they've had interesting stuff in their announcements that I then looked up and watched and enjoyed (usually on the Criterion Channel lol) and then purchased.

Oh man I'd love for CARNAL KNOWLEDGE to get a nicer boutique release. The German Blu-Ray from StudioCanal (which I own) has a great 4K restoration, but it has no English subs and lacking on extras. A masterpiece that deserves better!
