Feels like a Shout Factory 4K release like they've done with a lot of MGM title—even Guadagnino's Bones and All.

Not sure about Challengers with Criterion, but Licorice Pizza is still missing in action on UHD and does not appear to be amongst the Shout Factory Selects. It feels like Criterion may have it.

I recently went through a rewatch binge of the Michelangelo Antonioni films in the Collection and, while I dearly love the trilogy and Red Desert and Blow-Up (and yes Le Amiche, too), I've come to realize that Identification Of A Woman is perhaps my favorite Antonioni. Such a mysterious and intriguing film. The music is so perfect, from the moody synth score to the early 80s bands to the Scriabin Etude being played in the Venice hotel lobby.
Such a shame that this BD from Criterion is so bare-bones (just a trailer). But a great movie, nonetheless. |

Now Criterion has Blu-ray and 4K rights for the three MGM titles. I think it's very likely that Criterion acquire the rights to Fear And Desire (I know it's PD but I don't know who owns the elements and restorations), Spartacus, Lolita, 2001, ACO, The Shining, FMJ, and EWS. 1300 may be a big release. And with Kubrick having directed 13 movies, they may do something like that. At the very least he's the greatest American director of all time, at the most he's the greatest director of all. For his career-spanning sets to be long-OOP or cheap multi-film sets in your Walmarts and Targets...that simply cannot be the end of the line. If the big Six don't come together like they did for the various sets over the years (1999, 2001, 2011, 2014, 2019), Criterion will definitely do this. I can already hear "Queen Mary" in PCM mono...make it happen, Criterion. |

I'd like to have the honor of starting the May, June, and July wishlist posts.
We need David Lynch on 4K. -Eraserhead 4K (possibly with rough cut) -The Elephant Man 4K -Dune 4K (rough cut, four-hour two-tape VHS cut, TV cut, and theatrical cut, all fully restored) -Blue Velvet (rough cut) -Twin Peaks: From Z To A 4K (All special features, all episodes on both formats, all original episodes, both cuts of the pilot, both the theatrical cut and rough cut of Fire Walk With Me, The Return, everything. Make it a release that retires all other releases. This is my number one TV want from Criterion, and I will bang the drum for it until it happens.) -Wild At Heart 4K (rough cut (with extended [Show spoiler] scene and uncensored [Show spoiler] scene), X-rated cut (first scene shortened, second scene uncut), and R-rated cut (both scenes heavily edited), all fully restored)-On The Air: The Complete Series -Hotel Room: The Complete Series -Lost Highway (rough cut) -The Straight Story 4K (Ain't gonna happen. Thanks Disney. Get the Imprint.) -Mulholland Drive (all cuts fully restored) -Inland Empire 4K (TL;DR, it can happen. See the spoilered opus below.) This can happen and should happen. David Lynch is not a man who was a legend. He remains a legend in death as he was in life. It's time we bring out the big hits we all want. Surely one of these by July is reasonable. And Twin Peaks would absolutely be a Disc of The Year candidate. - [Show spoiler]

I'd like to close tonight's run of the Criterion thread with some videos of Lynch and his impact.
Shockingly, stunningly, frankly inexcusably, he never recorded a Closet video. If he has, either I'm unable to find it, or it's new and hasn't been posted yet. And last but certainly not least, who could forget when David Lynch told us exactly why we should never, ever, ever watch a movie on our phone? Rest in peace, David Lynch. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. <3 |

I really, really hope an extended Dune doesn’t happen, if we’re really respecting Lynch’s wishes. His pseudonym Judas Booth should tell everyone exactly what he thought of them. (And every one of the extended versions feels like they were spliced together by a sixth-grader who learned editing on their grandpa’s Super 8 splicer. The new interminable prologues with the two or three endlessly recycled pre-production paintings and the cowboy-sounding narrator had me rolling on the floor. ![]() I would have loved it if Lynch himself had taken a crack at it, though. The last few years, he sounded like he was finally coming a little bit to terms with it. I still remember the enthusiasm in his voice on the legendary Waldenbooks interview he did with Frank Herbert. It wasn’t the voice of someone who sounded like he was selling out. |

I don't think Criterion would ever do anything that would be against David Lynch's wishes, so no alternate cuts or critic essays/interviews/commentary tracks, chapter stops, etc. They'll continue to present the films as he wished.
Now, I could see Universal allowing the extended Dune to get released in the US. |

This illustration is real clear and easy to read, but reach out to this guy anyway and see if he can come up with ideas for re-starting the annual Jason Polan teaser for the New Year. We're missing it. Sincerely, A Fan |

And the release of THE STRAIGHT STORY to get is the 2024 4K restoration from StudioCanal Germany, not the dated Imprint. ![]() So much better, and was actually overseen by Lynch. Also a Fidelity in Motion encode! Last edited by MovieBuff647; 01-19-2025 at 04:22 AM. |

I wonder why Hotel Rooms and On the Air never made it to DVD or Blu-ray. They remain the last of the major projects he did that I haven’t seen. Was he embarrassed by them?
