I believe The Year of Living Dangerously is a Warner Bros. property. So let's trust them, not the director. Warner doesn't do heavy DNR in general and Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray of Weir's Fearless didn't have that issue either.

And to be fair, Weir wanted the heavy DNR on Picnic not because he generally preferred such digital tinkering but because of the particular soft, dreamy look of the film he'd originally intended. Not that I agree with his judgment, of course.

Yeah if WAC plans on putting out those two titles instead of Criterion I think we'll be good. However, if Criterion is the one putting out those titles then it's quite possible he'll be involved I just hope he doesn't DNR those two titles to death. Let's not forget Criterion has a WB deal so they might put these titles out too.

With all the people who would raise hell over it, I think it would be the best advertising Criterion could ever have. I would love it.

And it would take Emilia Perez from an eventually purchase to an automatic Day One.

Criterion's not stupid. They rarely work with directors who go revisionist, mainly because they don't want to deal with the drama. Mann's Thief is fairly controversial, and the Coen Brothers' Miller's Crossing is one of their most hated releases ever.

Do you remember the last time Criterion worked with James Cameron or George Lucas? Neither do I.

While Criterion could have (not saying they would have, for many reasons) got their hands on most if not all of Friedkin's films over the years, they also have known since at least 1998 (the first major overhaul of The Exorcist) that Friedkin never knew when to quit. They don't want to have to deal with that crap.

If The French Connection is happening, and I say if because I'm not 100% convinced myself, they likely waited until William Friedkin died before pulling the trigger. Look at Kino with Bug, Rampage, and Rules Of Engagement. Bug got cancelled the first time, and To Live And Die In L.A. nearly got cancelled too. Look at Arrow with Cruising, who made an effort to tell people "Nah, this ain't the last version we made while Billy stood on our balls."

They will likely rewind the clock AV-wise to the last DVD transfer, where it looked normal before Friedkin decided to play in his sandbox. I know there were releases in 2001, 2005, and 2006, but I'm not sure whether any of the discs are different.

And I'll put this out there again, because there are people on this site who work for the Big Six and the boutiques. If you guys remaster the original theatrical cut of The Exorcist, we will all buy it. It's one of my most wanted releases. Make it happen.

It was Peter Weir who wanted the DNRed look during the restoration. I would be surprised if Janus prepared and released yet another restoration master against the director's wishes.

All Weir has to do is go to the DGA and say he was kept out of a release, and they'll intervene on his behalf. James Cameron is known to have done this on at least one occasion with The Abyss, when a transfer was done behind his back. (It's likely that behind-his-back transfer is on some of the myriad boots out there, but it's obviously not on the 4K or Blu-ray that came out last March.)

While I want the films to get restored and get out there, if Criterion has them (they most likely do), they will look exactly like Picnic At Hanging Rock. WAC might put up some resistance, or outright can the release, but with Criterion, unless you're going to effectively put a target on them with a release (Miller's Crossing), they'll go along with any revision you want to make.

He has the rights to most of his films now, that's why.

If they wanted to release them, they'd have to do so the way WKW wanted them to, or there would be legal troubles.

To be fair on To Live and Die in LA, by Kino's own account, it was only held up because Friedkin was taking actual years to drop by and approve the HDR grade.

(And Friedkin also backed away from the French Connection fiasco, saying he was trying to get the through-the-camera look and the master wasn't what he intended. Of course, you know, I buy that just about as much as you probably do.)

Also, Midnight Cowboy's grading is pretty aggressively revisionist in many places, though the cut itself is untouched AFAIK.

Hence the reason I'm trying to get all older discs of his films...all selling for big bucks at the moment.

News to me about Kino. I'd previously heard he made it hell on them through both films, they barely got TLAD... done, and they killed Bug before it even got off the ground.

As for Midnight Cowboy, I've never seen nor owned that disc, but between Criterion and Kino, I'll likely wait for a 4K at this point.

Edit: I just browsed the caps of the 2011 MGM disc and the 2018 Criterion disc. I see it now. It's not as bad as some other teal washes, but it's there. I grew up with an ancient VHS of the movie, which looks somewhere in the middle of the two.

It probably wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me, but I can understand how it would be for many.

And ironically, the king of "this new color timing is revisionist" gave this disc a 5/5 for PQ and 5/5 overall. Gotta love it.

Just taking a closer look at Drugstore Cowboy's cover art even if it's a scene from the movie that art still looks really bad. I kind of wish Criterion had picked a different scene from the film instead of that one for the cover art as I don't think that scene was the best choice for the art.

Maybe they could do Nickel Boys as a double disc release with RaMell Moss's other work Hale County This Morning, This Evening.

Yeah, a couple of people asked them on Twitter the status after it didn't appear for awhile after the announcement, and they were were straight up, "We've been waiting for Bill to come in for a year and a half to approve the HDR grade."

If Criterion is the big secret monolith of the boutiques, Kino's blunt to a fault. Which is refreshing, but man, they really aren't concerned about burning bridges.

Ha! Chopper is one of my faves. Didn't realize Shout put out a Blu as I have an ancient DVD from some far away land.

Two off the wall suggestions for Criterion to release, both by Kinji Fukasaku: GREEN SLIME (1968) and VIRUS (1980). Both are actually fascinating, but have no blu-ray releases.

Virus had some rights issues years ago, but maybe they cleared. I would imagine almost any label going for this one. My personal favorite film about well...a virus.

There’s even a long interview with the real life Mark Chopper with Eric Bana on one of the special features it’s quite funny, and entertaining to watch. Also there’s even some deleted scenes too it’s a nice edition for this film.
