I just looked to see if I pre-ordered Anora and Basquiat and I am still $5.00 short to get free shipping.
The days that B&N coupons existed during the Criterion sale and would work were wild.

I attended an author event with John Sayles at my local library tonight. He was promoting his new book, but I got him to sign my Criterion editions of Matewan and Lone Star and a Blu of City of Hope afterwards. He also told me that Criterion is working on The Brother From Another Planet.

Great news! A public domain sourced Blu-ray came out last year that was pretty bad.

This is most excellent! I bought that garbage blu that came out recently but will be glad to have an official release with some bonus features, etc.

We are getting pretty close to new reveals, and really going to try and remain optimistic that we get some NEW to HD Japanese films. Not 4K upgrades, or new to Criterion but already have BD's. So something like the Kenji Misumi sword trilogy, Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron, The Burmese Harp, anything! Come on Criterion, throw this dog a bone!

Most recommended Charlie Chaplin films? I know someones just gonna say all of em. But I have the Circus. And I plan to buy Gold Rush during the next flash sale. I only need one more to hit the free shipping mark, because I have a couple of other films I'm picking up.

I could just buy his highest rated. But I want something a little different. Not sure I want something based in "modern city". Which is why I'm going with the Circus and Gold Rush. The Great Dictator looks a little different. Any other recommendations? Never watched any Charlie Chaplin so I'm about to remedy that situation soon. I watched a clip of the Circus and it was enough of a teaser to get me interested.

I've always considered Modern Times to be the magnum opus. The Great Dictator is a close second for me.

City Lights is my absolute favorite. It’s cinematic comfort food to me, I watch it when I’m sad and it cheers me up without fail. Modern Times is my other go to. Great Dictator is good, but it’s not particularly my favorite. But I’d say you can’t really go wrong with his silent/synchronized sound films, including his shorts.

I totally agree with this. Modern Times is my fav Chaplin, and I've shared it with lots of very different types of people.

And The Great Dictator, however appropriate, is outstanding tho not as good.

I just finished Imamura's 60's run. I can't believe none of these have blus. This guy is audacious. I had only seen some of his later works like vengeance and black rain, but this 60's Japanese New Wave stuff is phenomenal.

Especially A Man Vanishes, which I actually didn't enjoy watching, but feels groundbreaking and precedes Close-Up and F For Fake.

At least they're almost all streaming on criterion channel.

A boxset would be great, similar to what they did on DVD. I THINK the only one that has a 4K scan is Profound Desires of the Gods which I figured would have gotten a 4K. All of these films desire a nice release from Criterion.

I've never seen it but I recently came across a movie that sounds really interesting, to me at least, called "Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon" (1970) starring Liza Minnelli.
The synopsis sounds like right up Criterion's alley. I'm planning on getting the Olive Films Blu-ray.

I just finished Profound last night. Probably my favourite of the bunch. Maybe tied the The Insect Woman.

But I saw it had a 4k scan and was like, wow, this needs a 4k disc. He sure knew how to make a bang with that switch to colour.

Haha. If I was a betting man, I would say that's the next likely Japanese film from Criterion.

Anyone know what the last Fox or otherwise Disney-controlled title was that Criterion released, not counting Wall-E (since that was a one-off requested by the director)?
