The only release I'm actually predicting is UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG 4K, and I'll go ahead and throw in STARLET as a prediction as well.

As for wants, I'd love ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, Dominik's BLONDE, NETWORK (which is confirmed to have a completed 4K restoration that has already been screened), and PEDICAB DRIVER.

They definitely have the title licensed, and Audiard was recently in the Criterion Closet—it's just a matter of when it'll be released

One day...right? Sigh.

I'd also love a Juzo Itami set since they have EVERY SINGLE film he directed. Also all those Hideo Gosha films, Mashiro Shindoa, Ishiro Honda, and well the list practically never ends.

Agree with this sentiment but specifically films not yet available on English-friendly BD rather than 4K upgrades (the latter of which we know, alas, is Criterion's priority these days), e.g., In Praise of Love and Notre Musique

Lumet's Network from 1978? If so I don't know how I've been so out of the loop.

The Itami films did recently get 4K restorations, perfect for a nice boxset.

Correct. Totally possible WAC releases it (which I'm down for, especially if they got Fidelity in Motion for the encode) or it gets licensed out to Arrow, but the point is a 4K master exists.

Also, NETWORK was 1976!

And it looks like it may have been done by Park Circus, which could mean UK only. Hopefully Arrow if so.

Apparently not, the director has now officially posted and Criterion re-posted that it's coming to the Collection itself. I thought at first that it may be possible in the interview he was misspeaking since JC are sold through Criterion, but it seems not!

I hope so. I don't think he made a bad film so that would be amazing. I'd even take a release a year or something, but a nice boxset would be perfect.

I'm not big on box sets for anything other than a series of films. When it comes to directors, I'd rather pick and choose which titles I buy. In the case of Almodóvar, I've been happy with the Sony blu-ray releases of his films and don't feel the need to upgrade them to 4K. It's that 'Talk to Her' never got a high definition release and I really want that one.

If Criterion also want to bundle them all together for people who don't have them and want them all, or want to upgrade them all to 4K, that's fine. I just hope I can get 'Talk to Her' as a standalone release sometime soon.

In fairness they did just release their biggest box set ever just a few months ago. And my impression is that Fellini and Varda sell just fine (Fellini is currently sold out on the website, Amazon, and B&N).

Each box set, I'm sure, has its own logistical considerations (rights, restorations, number of discs, worry about cannibalizing standalone disc sales, etc.) that will factor into a calculation of whether it's worthwhile.

I'll keep on hoping Truffaut and Ozu make sense on these grounds. (Kurosawa I'm a bit more skeptical about given all the money they could milk out of individual 4K upgrades.)

I just think that in the 5 years since All About My Mother, Criterion could have released at least 5 more titles. At least Talk to Her, Law of Desire, Bad Education etc. But there has been nothing.

I was recently thinking about how great a Criterion release of Network would be. One of my favorite films, so I hope it happens!

Honestly, I'd rather Warner Archive or Arrow release it, but someone needs to put it out either way because every physical release so far has aged like milk and a 4K restoration does exist.

Has Sony offered to license those? It's more complex than "Criterion could've released this but turned it down."

That's not to say Criterion hasn't whiffed it in those ways before, such as THE FALL (ended up with MUBI) and SORCERER (ended up with WBHE).

I'm pretty sure the Almodóvar films Criterion currently have are through Sony. So yes, I would imagine they would license the remaining titles.

Not sure where The Fall and Sorcerer come in. The Fall was a title that Sony only had initial distribution rights for, and Sorcerer is Universal/Paramount partnered release that they let WHV distribute on Blu-ray. I do not think Criterion ever expressed interest in either of those.
