Don't forget I Know Where I'm Going. Can you work at Criterion for us old foggies who want the older films that's been DVD only for 25 years already! I like your list better than this months announcement . it was movies I like but they've already released years ago on BD or not to my taste. The Richard Lester films are fine but I don't feel a need to own them. I do still need to get Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Withnail and I to replace my ancient DVDs. I admit not knowing what the other two are so can't comment on them. I'll just go pre-order The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse when it's up for ordering.

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but please forget The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and a 4K for O Brother, Where Art Thou?. I may go ahead and buy the blu-ray of O Brother, Where Art Thou? soon, but it deserves an upgrade with some new special features soon. 2025 is also the 25th anniversary for the film.

I imagine that I Know Where I'm Going is coming sooner rather than later, if for no reason that the recent Film Foundation restoration was specifically co-presented by Criterion and Janus. Given that Powell and Pressburger is bread-and-butter for them, my guess is it'll finally be announced for the key July month. Guess we'll see.

Looks like NEON are releasing The Seed of the Sacred Fig themselves. Blu-ray only though.

Damn, I was really hoping for a stacked edition from Criterion compared to something barebones from Decal. There’s so much that can and should be said / documented about the film’s unbelievable origin and a proper BD would’ve done the film justice. I’ve noticed Lionsgate have the film in the UK at least theatrically but I’m not expecting anything more than the bare minimum from them either.

Yeah, I'm really surprised by the decision. I suppose there's a small possibility it could be like Moonage Daydream where NEON put out their release, and later on it got a deluxe 4K release from Criterion.

Oh wow, I did not expect this at all. NEON usually licenses out two Cannes films to Criterion a year, so I thought it was a safe bet this was going to be the other one.

There was a French release of The 49th Parallel in 2013

Does anyone know if the French Blu-ray of White Dog has the same transfer as the Criterion and MoC discs, or is it a different transfer?

Wasn't O Brother Where Art Thou digitally edited in 2K resolution? Or something like that? I believe a 4K is not possible (or wouldn't necessarily make sense) due to the source material.

There have been plenty of 4K UHDs that are upscales of movies finished at lower resolutions, ever since the dawn of the format.

With Time Blake Nelson getting some attention due to the new Captain America film, that reminded me how much we need Buster Scruggs on disc. I was almost certain once Criterion revealed they had a deal with Netflix it would come out soon after, but nope. Great film.

While I respect the craft of Buster Scruggs, it just stressed me out and made me feel bad.

the tom waits segment alone makes buster scruggs a winner.

“how high can a bird count, anyway?”

That's true. But has Criterion been one of those upscaling them? Besides Wall-E.

(I mean, there's other advantages too for 4k - grain, motion, tremendous bitrate - but I can't recall off-hand when they've put out a 2k transfer on UHD besides the one I mentioned.)

The previous Janus 404 page for #2231 has been updated to 1966's Dutchman.

I did a few minutes of research on this and learned that O Brother, Where Art Thou was the first 2K digital intermediate. Also, the blu-ray received a high A/V rating on this site with only special features rated as below average. So, I may still go ahead and buy the blu-ray since a 4K probably won't be announced soon. Although, if I buy it this month, Disney or a company they are willing to license it to will announce the 4K in March. I'm willing to take one for the team though.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion about OBWAT and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. I just want a solid release on 4K for both films this year. I'm not stuck on them coming from Criterion. I just figured since Criterion has released 4 Coen Brother(s) films that they're a good candidate for releasing OBWAT and TBOBS.
