The Mother and the Wh0Re (4K + Blu-ray even)
Pasolini 101

The Dekalog

Also, I can't fully tell, but the dimensions for Death in Venice and The Damned looked more like a BD to me too. It just didn't look as tall or narrow as DVD's he holds up, but he moves around fairly quickly so I can't definitively say.

And finally, if you look at the Polaroid pic taken of him during his visit, he holds up a bunch of other Blu-ray releases, which apparently didn't make the final cut for the video.

[Show spoiler]
Has there been any word on a 4K of Salo for the 50th? Granted I only saw it once and compared my memory to the Criterion caps (I don't own the Blu-ray), but from the outside looking in the disc hasn't aged well. It seems like it was a solid disc in 2011 but it looks weak in 2025.

Speaking of GDT, he's surprisingly a huge fan of The Devils. I wonder if he could get the ball rolling. And surely if a restoration needs paying for he'd have enough money for it.

I did that on my first purchase. It was a total noob move. I went to B&N days before the sale started, got the two-disc copy of Videodrome in the bigger box versus the one-disc copy in the smaller box, got it home, and wondered why it looked like ass.

To add insult to injury I was either 15 or 16 then, so I should've known the difference.

I really kicked myself after that one.

Would be interesting to see a release of it. There is a 4K restoration out there done by L'Immagine Ritrovata years ago but I have heard bad things about it. If there is a 4K release of this film, it either needs to be a new restoration or a radical changeover on the color grading. I believe there has been a release or two of this 4K restoration in Italy.

I don't really know if this film would garner a lot of customers. I feel like people interested in seeing this film can just find a copy online nowadays but that's just my take on the idea of a 4K release and its sales. With that said, a film like Salo would also be the most expensive release in value if it ever goes OOP, just like every other disturbing film because of the demand coming from the urge to see what has been said about a film like Salo.

Are the two Equinox copies on the right new versions? Or they just updated the case/spine?

Yes, at one point they updated the case and branding. Here's a pic from eBay

I cannot for the life of me figure out why the actual f*ck any studio or filmmaker works with Ritrovata. Seriously.

They are literally the Cleveland Browns of film restoration. Aside from the black-and-white film The Trial, I can't name one restoration they've produced that has had remotely good color timing. Frankly, I'm shocked The Trial didn't come out with a yellow tint.

There are three reviews in our system, the UK release from BFI in 2008, the French release from Carlotta in 2009, and the US release from Criterion in 2011. While they're quite muted in their color palette (likely intentionally so), and while there's a slight warm push (I shouldn't really call it warm, it's more of a push toward a cold sepia), none of the transfers look remotely close to what I'd expect if Ritrovata did the job.

I welcome anyone to send me caps, but I think I know exactly what I'll be getting.

And considering how I'm one of only five people in the film community who don't like the film, I think if Criterion released a piss-washed version of this film on 4K (and remastered Blu-ray), the whole community would burn down.

Going back to the laserdisc days, through three DVDs, and now on Blu-ray, Salo has always been one of their massive sellers. On LD lots, I have yet to see a reasonably large Criterion lot that doesn't include the title, and many smaller lots do too.

Criterion likely knows that a 4K would make beaucoup bucks, and between their amazing (in terms of titles) introductory 4K slate, and the Pasolini 101 set, I'm shocked there wasn't at least a remastered Blu-ray of Salo, let alone a UHD release.

I wonder if there is a reason, like bad or no master, since the film's been a mainstay in the Collection for three decades now.

The old master on the Criterion Blu-ray is a high-definition job on an IP, which is definitely not ready for 4K.

As for going out of print, that won't be happening. Criterion dropping Salo would be like Starbucks dropping Pumpkin Spice.

And yes, people can see it online, so if you're just out to see the movie, there are other (and less legal) ways to do it. However, the film community and the bootleg community rarely intersect. Even I didn't find Salo because I was into film, but because I was 14-ish, too broke to buy a disc then, and looking for shocks...I got them.

I'm sure whatever shady, foreign-based, pop-up-laden website had Salo then still has it now, and if not that at least one other website has popped up to take its place. Boot that's neither here nor there in this conversation.

Nowadays, the number one intersection of the cineastes and the pirates is The Devils, and the reason why is unavailability. Considering BFI and Criterion have both sides of the pond covered for Salo, it makes about as much sense for a film buff to pirate Salo as it would for a layperson to pirate Titanic or The Lion King.

On what purports to be Mikey Madison's Instagram page, her profile picture is from the Criterion Closet, and the full shoot is on there (albeit with no mention of their origin).

Considering she's roughly my age, it's nice to see more of us youngins with taste in film. I hope more of the younger celebs with this interest go public, and maybe it'll lead some more of their fans into our community.

They picked the right choice I'm going to be picking up the Blu-Ray once it gets physically released by Janus, or Criterion this year. I don't even care for the Oscars these days, but I'm glad the more deserving title won. I really need to check out this film at some point this month as I've heard such wonderful, and great things about it.

So do we have any predictions yet for Flow? Criterion proper or Janus Contemporaries?

For date, I'm thinking it's got to be July, since it'll still be riding high on April 15th, when the July slate gets announced.

It's been confirmed that it's coming to 4K through the main Criterion Collection line rather than Janus Contemporaries.

Here's the 4K thread for it: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=383103

And the news about that:

Quote:
‘Flow’ Will Join the Criterion Collection Later This Year with 4K Special Edition

You’re going to have another very exciting way to see it later this year: “Flow,” a Sideshow and Janus Films release, is entering the Criterion Collection and will available in a 4K special edition to own at home.

If you haven’t seen Gints Zilbalodis’s wondrous “Flow,” IndieWire’s pick for the best animated movie of 2024 (and the highest-ranked animated film on our list of the best movies of 2024), you’re going to have another very exciting way to see it later this year: “Flow,” a Sideshow and Janus Films release, is entering the Criterion Collection and will available in a 4K special edition to own at home.

One of the most acclaimed films of the past year across the board, “Flow” has earned two Academy Award nominations: for Best Animated Feature and Best International Feature — only one other film has ever scored nominations in both categories, 2021’s “Flee.” It also just won the Annie Awards for Best Animated Feature (Independent) and Best Writing.

“It’s an absolute dream come true to see ‘Flow’ featured in the Criterion Collection alongside the legendary filmmakers I grew up admiring, like Cuarón, Anderson, and Scorsese,” Zilbalodis said in a statement. “I can’t thank Criterion enough for this incredible honor! I’m thrilled to collaborate with them on the ultimate 4K special edition of ‘Flow.’ I have so much great stuff to share. It’s going to be amazing!”

Anora winning BP was so well deserved. The Brutalist was my favorite film of the year but I knew Anora was gonna have the upper advantage after the AI controversy came out. Also want to say Baker's speech for Best Director is probably my favorite speech of the entire show.

Anora hits a lot harder now than it did when it was released just a few months ago. That is all I will say about that.

Here is my review that I posted on the Movies sub-forum last year.
The movie does not pull any punches, and neither did I.

Anora was my third favorite movie of 2024, behind The Substance and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but I am glad to see it take home Best Picture.

I just read the premise of Anora, and it sounds like a great film I haven't seen too many romantic dramas, but this one sounds amazing definitely going to pre-order this one. Also I am very excited for Flow to come out from Criterion later this year.

I have to admit, after the AI thing, I'm a little bothered Brody won the Oscar, especially against Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice, Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown, and Colman Domingo for Sing Sing. They're four solid actors, and at least the four of them didn't have AI to help them out, they stood on their own two feet.

I think using it to tweak some syllables in Hungarian dialogue is literally just basic audio editing.

(And I would be shocked if Timothee’s singing wasn’t extensively tweaked by the guy who spent a ton of the last Indy film with an AI deepfake version of Harrison Ford.)

Yeah, the difference isn't that AI wasn't used in the other films, it's that it didn't become public. The general reaction from people in the industry at the time was "every film does this sort of thing, people just don't know about it yet." Same with autotune, lip-syncing, etc.
