The TCM festival page for Hud was just updated to mention that the festival will be premiering a new restoration!

Hud would be great and would make sense if Criterion has it which is why it hasn't gotten a physical release set. If not, could be Paramount Presents, Arrow, Kino, or even Vinegar Syndrome now. Now that's a release to get excited over.

It looks like Splendor in the Grass and The Wiz are world premiere restorations too. Presumably, The Wiz screening will be the print that Criterion is releasing.

This is a great movie! If you have the Criterion Channel, it's streaming on there right now as part of their spotlight on Claudette Colbert. "Midnight" is a hilarious screwball comedy written by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett, with Colbert, Don Ameche, Mary Astor, and John Barrymore. Colbert plays an unemployed showgirl who is hired by Barrymore to breakup wife Astor's affair. Colbert poses as a countess to make it believable that she'd be part of high society. Meanwhile, Ameche is a taxi driver who is looking for Colbert, whom he'd dropped off earlier that evening and has fallen in love with her. When she is located and he gets wind of her using his name as part of her countess persona, he is intrigued and joins in on the charade.

Had not heard of Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, but the director also directed The Red Violin, which I absolutely love. Hoping this is a promising indication that will get a release down the line.

Here's the Ask Eddie episode in question - Eddie comments on it at around 13:00 in:
I love The Big Heat and have refrained from picking up the Indicator (?) Blu Ray release so far. If/when Criterion releases it, I am definitely picking it up. It is a fantastic movie and contains what I believe should have been Gloria Grahame's Best Supporting Actress Oscar win. She deserved to win for this, not "The Bad and the Beautiful." The 1952 Best Supporting Actress Oscar, imo, should have gone to Jean Hagen for "Singin in the Rain."

I'm usually on the b and moan train, but this lineup looks great, especially the doc on MONK, which I saw at the theater first run, MIDNIGHT and SORCERER.

However, just to be true to form, I will say I'm not crazy about the art for SORCERER, which makes it look like a Disney cartoon for Christmas nor for MIDNIGHT, which looks like a drawing from one of those YOU CAN DRAW ads on the back of old comic books.

When I was 20 years old I spent a day in Chicago interviewing Friedkin and I loved the guy. Compared to the nightmare stories I've heard of him I must have caught him on a good day. He could not have been nicer to me or more polite and a lot of my questions were pretty rude too, not insulting, but not fawning or anything like that. When I listen to that interview now I come off as the a-hole more than Friedkin does!

Years later when I was following him on Twitter, he tweeted that he was in the process of supervising a complete restoration of SORCERER. I tweeted back, "Stay away from the pastels." And the next day he blocked me!

A bit off topic from today’s announcements but does anyone in the loop know if the emergence of imprint’s Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, Hamlet, and Henry V have any meaningful connection to a looming Criterion update?

I’m not opposed to importing or anything but I’d love to not have to sell/double dip the titles I already have.

Wow. I’ve sent Criterion, and other labels, numerous email requests for a release of Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, which has never been available on BD. I’m very excited to see it being released in 4K. It’s a very unconventional and engaging biopic. There’s some great titles this month, for sure.

Are we feeling confident that Criterion will release Eat Drink Man Woman and The Wedding Banquet?

I love the whole recollection, but that is an especially AMAZING punchline.

(I didn’t think much of the Sorcerer cover, but when you view it closer to actual size, it kind of rocks. I think I read somewhere that he had wanted something like that to be the poster?)

Yeah, I am only interested those 2 titles so I don't want to buy the whole set. I would hope that Imprint's release would motivate Criterion to finally put these films out but I imagine the reality is that they don't care and will put them out when they feel like it...

[Show spoiler]Hopefully within the next 10 years.
