I won't comment on that review. I'll just say this new Godzilla vs Biollante release is far and away the best the film has looked, and likely ever will

Agreed. I personally couldn't care less what Tarantino has to say about anything and have avoided his b.s. for years. I only wish the ghost of Bruce Lee could come back and kick his ugly ass face.

Tempted to pick up THIEF, but does anyone think Arrow will upgrade their superb Blu to 4K at some point? I would just as soon wait for them to do it.

Midnight is absolutely on my Barnes & Noble sale list for this summer! Arsenic and Old Lace is hilarious and Bringing Up Baby a total delight. I still need to watch the other two (along with many others)!

He wants certain things from Criterion, many of which I don't think make sense, but you know what? That's okay. He articulates his points respectfully.

The fact is, a company has to pick a direction. It's okay to not like that direction. I personally love much of what they've been doing - a LOT - but "not for me" is a valid argument. The only thing I'd say is, you know, if the company's lost you, maybe it's not emotionally productive to keep frequenting a forum dedicated to Criterion enthusiasts and get a lot of rhetorical pelting, but hey, I've been there too.
I agree with you on Duke who I know personally off the boards and I know is genuinely DISAPPOINTED in Criterion more than he harbors any kind of over the top unreasonable hatred for them. I could probably be categorized in the "anti-Criterion trolls" camp, but my argument is usually less about them than all their cheerleaders who believe they NEVER do any wrong. I was raised in the 60's where you never trusted any corporate entity completely and unconditionally and I know most of my rancor is rooted in that. I would never defend any company in the world without qualifications, which is why I don't subscribe to the Criterion cult, but none of that means I boycott their product or don't often recognize the stellar quality they are capable of distributing and adding to the hobby. I'm sure plenty of Criterion acolytes have put me on their Ignore lists and plenty of others too and the worst part of it is that so many of my posts skew cynical and negative way too often. But I get riled by the fans who in my estimation go too far in their adulation.

If anyone is on the fence about PAPER MOON, I've already watched the 4K twice and it looks really superb. So far my favorite 4K transfers have all been of black and white movies and this one is as good as the Sony release of LAST PICTURE SHOW, which I also give my highest praise. The 4K is so transcendent, it's like being taken back in time.

Yeah I ain’t spending 75 bucks I just bought a number of Shout! Factory titles this month, and last month from their sales including going out of print titles, and will be more focused on the MovieZyng sale for WAC, which I haven’t participated in before. I might just end up picking up some stuff for Criterion during the July Barnes and Noble sale, and also at Deep Discount too as they’re having a 4K sale currently, which includes a lot of Criterion titles, and shipping is much cheaper. So I’m completely avoiding the Flash sale in this instance.

Excited to grab a few new titles and upgrade another.

A Woman of Paris: caught this on the channel and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of Adolphe Menjou.

Godzilla vs. Biollante: This film is one of my favorites out of the series. Happy to own it and support more individual Godzilla releases.

Yojimbo / Sanjuro: An upgrade. These films are a family favorite and I'm looking forward to viewing them on 4K.

Winchester '73: Staple James Stewart film. I've really gotten into Western films this past year.

Hopefully that'll be the catalyst for you to load up on all of Criterion's other releases of his films (in addition to Kino's release of Broken Flowers.) I need to delve deeper into his filmography, but all 7 of those movies are total keepers.

In the case of Mystery Train, I'm a fan of it overall, but the third act is the kind of ebullient, gonzo brilliance you don't come across often. My god is everything about that segment wonderful, from the atmosphere, acting, action and tonal comedy/drama balancing act. It elevates the whole thing to something special.

Hope you dig it!

My 'Flash Sale' order:

--I'm especially happy to finally get the Blu-ray edition of Babette's Feast, which had been out-of-stock at both Criterion and Barnes & Noble during all of their sales for the last couple of years. It was never officially out-of-print (and the DVD was regularly available), but apparently had been between pressings for quite a while.
