I toyed with upgrading a few titles, but the Kino sale is next week, and I already have a pile of unwatched Criterions, so I held off. I'll go wild in July. I did buy Scarface this week from Amazon's warehouse for under 50% off.

Titles I really wanted, perhaps moreso than the ones I actually bought, but held off for fear of a coming 4K upgrade:

Same - I def want Performance at some point, and I kinda wanted Godzilla/Biollante, and I sorta wanted Inside Llewlyn Davis, but I didn't have a fourth movie for free shipping and only Performance was a sure thing.

So maybe I'll get Kino titles or and/or wait till July and get Performance, Night Moves, and Theolonius Monk.

Saving Face Blu-ray
I completely forgot about Cape Fear. Someone has to have that movie, likely Arrow. It can't just be sitting in the Universal vaults.

And unlike most of his other films on Blu-ray, Cape Fear is one of the only Scorsese Blu-rays that's awful. It was par for the course with late 2000s-early 2010s Universal releases, but it was well below what Scorsese's other Blu-ray releases.

A fun bonus feature would be the pan-and-scan VHS cut. Scorsese attempted to do a letterbox-only release of the film, but Universal forced him into a compromise: the laserdisc would be letterbox only, but they'd let Scorsese supervise the pan-and-scan process for the VHS which was pan-and-scan only. Scorsese got the last laugh though, and made sure that the pan-and-scan transfer was a jerky, unstable, unwatchable mess.

It certainly wouldn't make for prime viewing nowadays, but it would make for an entertaining watch. And it's a director-approved transfer after all.

I never knew Five Easy Pieces had a standalone release. Thanks for that.

Hmmmmmm

I'm going with a pretty basic, and somewhat a bit random list of titles for July
Captain Blood 1935
A Japanese new to Blu-Ray title box set
Flow
Brother From Another Planet
One of the two big silent films that WAC said Criterion plans to release this year
Alfred Hitchcock box set
The Year of Living Dangerously
Oliver Twist and Great Expectations
The Manchurian Candidate re-release

I'm probably wrong on some of these, but I have a feeling some of these titles are coming next month. However, who even knows anymore Criterion for just May, and June alone has been quite unpredictable so who knows. Also yes 9 titles sounds absolutely bonkers, but considering how many titles we got in May, and June alone it doesn't sound as crazy anymore.

Not having to worry about having to get some Criterion Blu-ray titles off my want list quickly, helps. The Criterion flash sale looked tempting, and if I had bought something (wasn't sure if you could make an order with a US shipping address and UK billing address) I would have kept the order to strictly two titles (The Asphalt Jungle and Pandora's Box). But any saving would have been eaten up by paying for the shipping twice (to the US address, then onto me).

Since the Criterion portion of my collection hasn't received much attention in a while, I took advantage of this sale to make up for lost time and picked up a few that have been on my radar for a minute.

Yeah I fully expect SISTERS to eventually get a 4K as it is a 4K restoration, hence why I have not bought the Criterion yet despite it being my favorite De Palma.

It has been 4 or 5 years, but at the time of its rumored 4K restoration, Arrow, Shout and Kino all denied having it.

I always liked how Criterion takes any movies you purchased from your wishlist on the website and automatically adds them to your collection. However, they don't remove them from your wishlist, so you still have to go through and manually delete 'em. After picking these up, it appears I am now sitting at exactly 500 Criterions. I think if you hit 1000, they should fly you out to NYC to have a crack at the closet. Just sayin'!

I couldn't spend a lot on the flash sale, so I grabbed these for now:

Welp, that only leaves one man standing...and it's the one who can literally take five years plus to drop a disc. -_-

One, you should definitely get some form of a reward for having a certain number of titles.

Two, every single time I see the cover of the 2023 film Last Summer, I want to scream that we don't have the 1969 film Last Summer.

Suffice it to say I'm about to go Scanners reading this thread this past week.

This might not have anything to do with a label’s decisions - Scorsese and Spielberg have been trying to get a series adaptation of Cape Fear made for awhile. Now that it’s going into production at Apple, I’d guess we probably won’t see a Cape Fear disc until that hits.

You can certainly do that! Earlier on I used to go to California a few times a year so got the flash sale titles sent to the office or hotel* but for the last few years have used a reshipper. I always buy at least four titles to get free shipping to Stackry, where there is no sales tax, so the only shipping cost is around £22 for the cheapest option to the UK. That stage typically takes around a week

HTH!

* My big regret is never managing to visit a B&N during the sale

Would have been one order but the last 3 codes wouldn't go through since I get the codes from 2 emails.
So order 2 shipped already and order 1 is being packed.

United Kingdom Is the Bergman box-set worth getting if I already have the BFI collection?

I am looking at box-sets to get during the B&N 50% sale since I found a way to ship to the UK. People say the Bergman sets is one of the essential ones to get. I have all the volumes of the BFI collection that they put out so I was wondering if the Criterion is worth it or is it better to get something new.

Holy moly, my sale order is out for delivery this morning! I’ve been having a lot of issues with usps lately with getting packages fairly slow/meandering in sorting facilities way past the holidays, so this is a nice surprise.
