Watched The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover today and thought it was amazing, 5/5.

Is there definitive evidence that Criterion has rights to it, or just people hoping? And if they do, has there been any rumblings recently that it's coming any time soon? Or should I just get that region free Umbrella release?

I could have sworn people were saying they thought Severin had it, but if it's Criterion it would make sense why it's taken so long to get a release.

I’ve never seen anyone cite proof of any kind that Criterion has it - just speculation & wishing for years. And like Duke, I think the latest buzzing I had heard for it was in the Severin camp. I’d love to see it from either.

Shout/Scream Factory. Sometimes Arrow Video. See recently The Long Kiss Goodnight. Paramount Presents use to makes bluray only. Now they do only 4K combo packs. And a few other labels.

All of these increases the price and there are those that don’t have or want 4K yet. Just keep them separate.

I wouldn’t think Severin would have it, I believe their Universal deal didn’t go through.

I saw a 35 mm print of Harakiri tonight at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago. It was in decent and definitely watchable condition, but far from pristine. I enjoyed hearing the audience's reactions as the story unfolded.

Definitely feeling grateful to see both this and Seven Samurai on the big screens this past year. Hopefully the Kobayashi 4K floodgates start opening soon.

Watching Ozu’s Early Summer on TCM early yesterday, I wondered why this hasn’t made the upgrade to Blu yet. Maybe it’s coming in the untitled Yasujiro Ozu Box Set (1929-1962) 36 movie set that shows up in the search box on this site. If only …

Vengeance Is Mine is a tour de force, and way ahead of its time. It sits proudly alongside the like of Henry, Lambs, Memories of Murder and Zodiac. Like you, I'd love to see it get a 4K release

Yes I only watched it the other day. I hadn't heard a lot about it but the 'true crime' element as well as the postive score on RT led me to make a bllind buy. The violence in this film feels very real. It's gorey but it demonstrates how horrific and devastating these actions are. The leading man in this film did a terrific job. Same with the man who plays his father. The conflict and resentment between the two plays out in the most destructive way.

The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933) will be screening at the TCM Film Festival, sourced from a newly restored 35mm print. The film is courtesy of the BFI National Archive, and Janus Films.

Quote:
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII (1933)

Although the role has been played by great actors such as Emil Jannings and Richard Burton, Charles Laughton’s depiction of Henry VIII is most often hailed as the definitive interpretation. The image of him tearing apart a roast chicken while complaining that “Manners are dead!” is indelible. But he also has moments of great pain upon discovering that one his wives (Binnie Barnes) has been unfaithful to him and, later, childlike mischief as he sneaks food against his last wife’s wishes. Laughton’s multi-faceted, larger-than-life portrayal made the film the first British hit on American screens and made him the first actor to win an Oscar for a film produced outside of the U.S. Even though the film omitted Henry’s first wife and relegated three more to minor roles, Merle Oberon registered strongly in her one scene as Anne Boleyn. More time went to Elsa Lanchester, Laughton’s real life wife, in a deft comic turn as Anne of Cleves and Barnes as the seductive Katherine Howard.

d. Alexander Korda, 94m, 35mm

Courtesy of The British National Archive and Janus Films.

Print source: BFI National Archive. Restored by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation, in association with ITV and Park Circus. Funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation. Premiere of a new 35mm restored print made in 2024.

Yeah, it was revealed at the 2024 New York Film Festival that Janus/Criterion had it. Now the question is whether Criterion plans to release any of these Film Foundation titles anytime soon. They've amassed more than enough for another WCP set or three.

Funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation. The Fall of Otrar (1991) was restored in 4K from the original camera and sound negatives. Scanning was performed by ARDFILM in Almaty (Republic of Kazakhstan). Ardak Amirkulov supervised the scanning and approved the final grading. Special thanks to Daniel Bird. Restoration work was completed in 2024 by L’Immagine Ritrovata.

They come out on an average of every two-three years (2013, 2017, 2020 and 2022), so we should be due for another set in pretty short order.

Vengeance is Mine is a phenomenal film. I'd personally rate it a cut above all the other titles you mentioned. Seconding wishes for a 4K edition.
