He can’t even write a positive review without shaking his fist at the woke menace alienating Hollywood from “real America.”

From the Harold Lloyd Facebook page:

Quote:
WHY WORRY? has been scanned for a Blu-Ray release. Here is a scene that didn't make it into the final film.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...ibextid=wwXIfr

Also confirms more Harold Lloyd shorts as bonus features and possibly a commentary track.

Thanks @DeprongMori on the Criterion Forum.

Spike Lee's High and Low remake has an August release date, so I expect Criterion to announce their UHD of the original either for August or September.

Apologies if posted elsewhere or already discussed, but how will the new tariffs affect Criterion?

Duke now has to wait 40 years for new Japanese films to come out, instead of 20.

In all seriousness, no one really knows the answer to that.

Is it too late for them to pull an Uncut Gems and switch Midnight to a 4K combo? I hate that so much garbage gets upgraded but a brand new 4K restoration of a gorgeous masterpiece gets the 2010 treatment.

I mentioned this in another thread, but there wouldn't really be a huge improvement with a 4K release of Midnight. The film's restoration was done in SDR, from a 35mm fine grain positive, so it wouldn't have HDR/DV. The only thing you'd get is a bump in resolution, but it would almost certainly be similar to their 4K release of Scarface (1932), which many feel is just a negligible improvement (if that) from the existing Blu-ray.

Quote:
For this restoration, Universal Pictures primarily used a 35mm nitrate comp fine grain. The picture element was dry gate scanned in 4K on an ARRI film scanner for a 4K workflow. Universal applied digital processes to improve flicker and stability, address diagonal streaking issues, and clean up film damage, dirt, scratches, and stains. Audio was restored from the 35mm comp fine grain. Digital audio restoration tools were applied to reduce optical anomalies, noise floor, hum, rumble, and sibilance where possible. Restoration services conducted by NBCUniversal StudioPost.

Not 40 years! Haha.

This gives me some hope and came from the owner of AnimEigo

"What @dubudavid said. The post is completely incoherent to anybody who knows anything about how the entertainment business works. There is no mechanism to collect tariffs on things that are not physical goods being imported. So until there's something here that can be actually applied to the real world, this is just noise."

I'm pretty sure this means A MAN AND A WOMAN is coming to the collection. Recent 4k restoration just showed in NYC also.

I sure hope it happens. I'm still impatiently waiting for Girl Shy, which was said to be in the works in late 2023. I hope they're not waiting for some big box set to do more Harold Lloyd.

Exciting news! It was confirmed though that Carl Davis never recorded his score, but the Robert Israel score from 2002 or 2003 is very good. Perhaps there's also a vintage Gaylord Carter score lurking within the Lloyd archives.

I'm going to predict a Dog Day Afternoon announcement next Thursday for an August 19th release date since the movie takes place close to that calendar day.

Oh yeah, August's announcements are next week. I'll predict:

High and Low UHD upgrade
Compensation
Saving Face
Point Blank
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Kenji Misumi's Sword Trilogy

I really hope we don't get another Kurosawa blu ray to UHD upgrade. How about those that never got a blu ray in the first place, like Stray dog or Drunken Angel? I've been waiting for those for 15 years now. High and Low's blu ray still looks wonderful.

You're in a very small minority there, my friend. A lot of people around here act like Blu-ray is some relic from the Middle Ages, something to only to be appreciated by philistines and serfs, and REQUIRE that 5-10% uptick in quality provided by UHD in order to have a satisfactory movie-watching experience.

Unfortunately, this is the audience that Criterion has apparently made its mission to appease, and the next Criterion Kurosawa release will very likely be an "upgrade".

If Criterion decides to release Kurosawa movies that haven't yet seen a Blu-ray release, they could go straight to 4K, considering they always include the Blu-ray version anyway. There are still many films left, such as Drunken Angel, Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, Red Beard, and Dersu Uzala. I'm still hoping Criterion gets Ran back one day! Personally, I have no intention of upgrading Yojimbo or High and Low to UHD. The worst part is that everything from the extras to the packaging remains the same, offering very little incentive to upgrade, in my opinion.

Hoping for Throne of Blood and The Hidden Fortress UHD upgrades, though BFI has taken care of the former in the UK.

I get that sentiment, but High and Low's 4K restoration is a huge improvement over Criterion's BD. You can see a night and day difference between it, even from BFI's BD release:

I'm sure Stray Dog is also coming too. I imagine every title has to be released in Japan first in order for Criterion to release it themselves. Drunken Angel has yet to get a 4K release from Toho.

Yeah, I hadn't realised how great the new 4k master looked, I might cave too lol (I'm a sucker for Kurosawa, probably my favorite director of all time). Still, I really wished Toho would have put the priority on the other ones. It is what it is, at least something is finally happening with Kurosawa.
