Very excited for the return of the Eclipse Series. As someone who's grown a little fatigued with bonus features over the years, I'd love to just get some of these films out of limbo and out into the marketplace, even if that means no extras and whatever HD transfers they are provided.

Access at this point is more important to me for some of the more obscure stuff than a plethora of supplements that, to be honest, I may never get around to and may just hold up releases from ever seeing the light of day.

If the return of Eclipse means we get more films made available, I'm all for it.

I would love the Dearden set just to get a decent quality version of All Night Long back in the lineup.

Perfect news about Eclipse!

I was just demanding for the early films of Fassbinder so I hope that's on the docket soon.

With the possibilities of a Hideo Gosha set now much more POSSIBLE, I really hope it can happen, but any push to Criterion will help. If others can suggest those films here: suggestions@criterion.com it would be greatly appreciate.

Hell, if a set comes out in the next five years and you screenshot your e-mail to them, the first five people who send the screenshot to me, I'll buy you the Hideo Gosha set if it ever happens! Haha, that's how badly we need these movies. Hunter in the Dark is a top ten Japanese film of mine, and it's just so good.

Again, now is the time to act as they plan their 2027 slate as it sounds like 2026 is booked.

Excited to hear that the Eclipse series is getting upgraded to Blu. So many Japanese films that are possibilities for Blu.

I just ordered a couple of Eclipse sets during the last sale (When Horror Came to Shochiku, early Kurosawa and postwar Kurosawa, which I’m still waiting on) worrying that they would all be going OOP. So nice to see that this line is coming back, and on Blu-ray to boot!

(Early Kurosawa is OOP, but Amazon briefly had copies in stock).

I'm dying to upgrade that set. I just adored Les Misérables when I watched it last year, so I'll be sure to pick that up if it comes!

The Love Parade was recently restored and shown at the Berlin Film Festival last year. So I have high hopes that we do get a Lubitsch Musicals upgrade soon!

And if they can somehow get Warner Bros to include the 1934 Merry Widow in that set, all the better!

I've been saying for years that they should resurrect the Eclipse line as a Blu-ray thing, and now they have. Glad I held off on the Lubitsch DVD set until this news.

Huzzah for them. May they meet financial success with this decision.

The second was a real increase in things like commentaries, which we’ve been seeing all year.

This is the third real sign, I think - they’re able to bring on the staff and resources required for a third major line after Criterion proper and the former Janus Contemporaries.

I'm with you. I was dubious when Rales bought Criterion, but I'm getting more excited every month. Something's clearly shifted and, so far, for the better. And now, the revival of the Eclipse series is something I wouldn't have even dreamed would happen. Looking forward to seeing what's coming next.

I assume the same will happen with The Report (included on Certified Copy).
Given the rape and plagiarism allegations against him, I suspect that Ten and 10 on Ten are two that aren't going to see the light of day anytime soon.

Could someone help me with this? (Initially posted in Citizen Kane 4K thread)

Quote:
November will be three years since the disc debacle began. Would anyone be willing to clarify how Criterion is handling these releases nowadays?

Are they still using the sticker method? A sticker on the shrink wrap with "715515270113" (the corrected UPC for the 4K release), and then once you unwrap it, you see the faulty original UPC (715515266116) and "First printing 2021" on the back case? Or have they started to issue new Slipcovers with the corrected UPC and "Second printing 2021" on the back?

Thanks!
Thanks!

Criterion The Eclipse Series Lives!... Again!!... But Now On Blu-ray!!!

Holy sh*t, this recent news regarding The Criterion Collection resurrecting their Eclipse Series of box sets but this time on Blu-ray has me so frickin' excited!
This decision is most highly welcomed and long overdue!

With that being said, go ahead and sign me up for wanting to receive proper Blu-ray upgrades of previous Eclipse Series box sets.
I'll be quite relieved to finally ditch the remaining DVDs that are still unfortunately lingering within my collection.
There's at least a minimum of 14 previously released Eclipse sets I'm desperately hoping will receive a proper Blu-ray upgrade sometime soon in the near future:

That's like a total of 61 individual films!

[Show spoiler]Eclipse Series #3 - Late Ozu [5 Films] (June 12th, 2007):
  1. Early Spring (1956)
  2. Tokyo Twilight (1957)
  3. Equinox Flower (1958)
  4. Late Autumn (1960)
  5. The End Of Summer (1961)
    Eclipse Series #7 - Postwar Kurosawa [5 Films] (January 15th, 2008):
  6. No Regrets For Our Youth (1946)
  7. One Wonderful Sunday (1947)
  8. Scandal (1950)
  9. The Idiot (1951)
  10. I Live In Fear (1955)
Eclipse Series #10 - Silent Ozu Three Family Comedies [3 Films] (April 22nd, 2008):
  11. Tokyo Chorus (1931)
  12. I Was Born, But... (1932) [I believe this film was included as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray of Good Morning (1959).]
  13. Passing Fancy (1933)
    Eclipse Series #13 - Kenji Mizoguchi's Fallen Women [4 Films] (October 21st, 2008):
  14. Osaka Elegy (1936)
  15. Sisters Of The Gion (1936)
  16. Women Of The Night (1948)
  17. Street Of Shame (1956)
Eclipse Series #15 - Travels With Hiroshi Shimizu [4 Films] (March 17th, 2009):
  18. Japanese Girls At The Harbor (1933)
  19. Mr. Thank You (1936)
  20. The Masseurs And A Woman (1938)
  21. Ornamental Hairpin (1941)
    Eclipse Series #17 - Nikkatsu Noir [5 Films] (August 25th, 2009):
  22. I Am Waiting (1957)
  23. Rusty Knife (1958)
  24. Take Aim At The Police (1960)
  25. Cruel Gun Story (1964)
  26. A Colt Is My Passport (1967)
    Eclipse Series #21 - Oshima's Outlaw Sixties [5 Films] (May 18th, 2010):
  27. Pleasures Of The Flesh (1965)
  28. Violence At Noon (1966)
  29. Sing A Song Of Sex (1967)
  30. Japanese Summer: Double Suicide (1967)
  31. Three Resurrected Drunkards (1968)

  32. Sanshiro Sugata (1943)
  33. The Most Beautiful (1944)
  34. Sanshiro Sugata Part Two (1945)
  35. The Men Who Tread On The Tiger's Tail (1945)
    Eclipse Series #26 - Silent Naruse [5 Films] (April 5th, 2011):
  36. Flunky, Work Hard (1931)
  37. No Blood Relation (1932)
  38. Apart From You (1933)
  39. Every-Night Dreams (1933)
  40. Street Without End (1934)
Eclipse Series #28 - The Warped World Of Koreyoshi Kurahara [5 Films] (August 23rd, 2011):
  41. Intimidation (1960)

Eclipse Series #37 - When Horror Came To Shochiku [4 Films] (November 20th, 2012):
  46. Giant Space Monster Guilala "a.k.a. The X From Outer Space" (1967)
  47. Goke Body Snatcher From Hell (1968)
  48. The Living Skeleton (1968)
  49. Genocide (1968)
Eclipse Series #38 - Masaki Kobayashi Against The System [4 Films] (April 16th, 2013):
  50. The Thick-Walled Room (1956)
  51. I Will Buy You (1956)
  52. Black River (1957)
  53. The Inheritance (1962)
Eclipse Series #41 - Kinoshita And World War II [5 Films] (December 16th, 2014):
  54. Port Of Flowers (1943)
  55. The Living Magoroku (1943)
  56. Jubilation Street (1944)
  57. Army (1944)
  58. Morning For The Osone Family (1946)
Eclipse Series #42 - Silent Ozu Three Crime Dramas [3 Films] (April 21st, 2015):
  59. Walk Cheerfully (1930)
  60. That Night’s Wife (1930)
  61. Dragnet Girl (1933)

But of course, I would be totally content with Criterion releasing some entirely new collections of pre-1980s Japanese cinema as well.
Just putting it all out there in case anyone from the Criterion staff are even reading any of this...

The titles I want upgraded are the following sets the Mizoguchi, Ozu, Shochiku horror set,
and the Kurosawa sets are the ones I want upgraded so bad.
