My best guess is those titles, as well as An Unmarried Woman were part of a previous licensing agreement prior to the Disney acquisition. The reason I'm jumping through those hoops of assumption is because Criterion is notoriously slow to release titles they've acquired, and secondly because we've seen hardly any activity since the 2020's from a studio that has plenty of lucrative titles that fit Criterion's brand, while being financially viable. It's all guessing here and I may be totally wrong, but that's my reasoning.

I mean, possibly? It’s not illogical. Still, it was four years from the Disney purchase to those titles coming out, and even though Criterion is known for their long lead times from time to time, it’s still debatable. (And I believe it was established that Wall-E was a fresh licensing?)

I'm sure it wouldn't happen until next year, but I would LOVE to have a Criterion edition of Network.

at this point I'll take anything they've been sitting on for a few years lol so many titles have just been locked away because Criterion owns the license but won't do anything with them

if you can't, just release the license so someone else can!

I'd love that (especially if they actually surprise with Memento) but come on there's got to be an Akira Kurosawa announcement for November too, right? Criterion is falling behind BFI pretty fast. It's not to their advantage to let impatient buyers import and lose out on sales down the line.

I wish this assumption would go away. It’s like, every once in awhile, I see someone saying, it’s been years since they announced Atlantics, guess it’s not coming out or they forgot about it. And then Becker is like, the director was just in last week working on supplements. The Lady Eve took a decade because they really wanted a better source. (And when they finally gave in and made do with cleaning up what they had, they got hammered for being lazy and using a substandard master. “Why didn’t it look like The Philadelphia Story?”)

We have no idea where things are or why they’re not moving. It could be schedules of the talent, it could be holdups from the licensor, it could be source issues, it could be timing with someone else’s previously scheduled restoration. All I know is this: Criterion paid for those rights. And a company that’s historically been close to the edge financially would rather be making money on something they paid for.

Maybe we'll finally get Stray Dog this month?

With November being one of their big months, it was hard not to include every major title connected to Criterion in there, as well as some films that have an anniversary (like Pee Wee for example).
I feel like Pee Wee's Big Adventure really deserves a 4k, and I was shocked it didn't get one for its anniversary! Very well could be with Criterion though. This would absolutely be the year for it, besides the anniversary, I feel like the documentary and the announcement that the Alamo bought one of the bikes just really launched him and this movie back into the public's minds. I re-watched it earlier this year, and its just so good.

I'll take two or three Kurosawa announcements in the same month. I really do think we're either getting Red Beard, or Stray Dog this month. My hunch is Stray Dog, or maybe both of them like they did with Fires on the Plain, and the Burmese Harp. Also I put a Scorsese title, and Fuller title too in my guesses as I think both of them make a lot of sense for November. As we haven't gotten a Fuller title in years.

I don't remember what film it was, but didn't Jamie Lee Curtis earlier this year say one of her films was getting a Criterion?

Perfect would make a lot of sense it has literally never been on Blu-Ray, and is stuck on a crappy Lionsgate DVD from Artisan Entertainment. I really like that film it's a lot of fun.

She was promoting Love Letters a few months back on her IG.

What a lovely appreciation to wake up to. With all the current talk about female representation in movies, i'm so happy that Amy Jones, who wrote and directed this beautiful film in 1983, is getting some attention now. Streaming has its many detractors, but it's bringing films that never really received much of a wide audience out and into the world. Thank you @newyorkermag and Richard Brody, @criterioncollection and Roger Corman and, of course, Amy Jones. This work preceded Trading Places and gave me an opportunity to break free from my previous work in horror films. Link in bio!
The film was released on The Criterion Channel, but a disc seems quite possible.

JM responded to my email, saying that The Traveler in Eclipse 47 will be the 2018 restoration.

If EoTSK is released, I would imagine it would be released with EoTSK 2. I imagine The Magnificent Butcher is big enough of a title to be released by itself.

Depends if Criterion can get the rights to it as there has yet to be any Blu-Ray release AFAIK. (Certainly not in the UK.)
