It is a Fox title in the US, so import the UK edition.

He's also, predictably, aged extremely well. Seeing him so erudite on arthouse cinema is also a pleasant surprise.

Despite being the "heartthrob" in The Outsiders (which is funny considering Tom Cruise was on the cusp of breaking out), Lowe said that Dillon was the coolest guy he'd ever met, and was the one all the girls were smitten with.

Always one of my favorite actors, and definitely among our least appreciated. Would love to see Tarantino cast him in his (alleged) final film.

He's the reason I finally watched one of these videos, cool stuff!

Watched "Detour" and the Criterion restoration looked amazing - there are a few glitchy spots here and there, and I didn't watch the feature on the restoration but I'm sure there were obstacles.

It's pure noir - 69 minutes so the fast pace makes you overlook plot devices of coincidence, bad luck, bad timing, but then it is a noir so that will happen. Ann Savage IS savage and she's only 24 but def. acts like she's got a lot more hard road behind her. The plot's luckless slob Tom Neal ended up being a noir plot in real life.

As an aside, Neal - a boxer - beat up Franchot Tone, who I saw in "Mickey One." Even though it was a few years later, Tone's face looked pretty rough. I wonder if that was partially the result of Neal's beat-down.

Also recently saw "In a Lonely Place" with Bogart - again, picture looked great, and Bogie is of course great as someone we would call a domestic abuser today. Gloria Grahame was only 26 but has that same look Savage had, of world-weary and ready to cut you before you cut her.

At the last sale I got these, as well as "Night and the City" and "Kiss Me Deadly," so more noir to come!

You assume that the narrator is being honest with you.

Haha - very good point. It's all technically a flashback. Is he being honest with himself? That's a good thing to have in mind when I watch it again.

Tone is a cautionary tale of the ravages of alcoholism. See also William Holden and Spencer Tracy.

Too bad, Tone was a good actor. By all accounts he was very kind to Jean Harlow, encouraging her to be a serious actress.

Yeah, definitely watch the restoration demo. The biggest obstacle was when they found a basically pristine source with burned-in subtitles, and they had to basically hand-paint out all of that because compositing with other, much jankier sources (with missing frames and extreme judder) didn’t work. Restoration specialists don’t get anything like the credit they deserve.

Just purchased Grey Gardens with an amazon coupon for $15 and while adding it to "my collection" on the criterion website, I discovered it was my 50th criterion collection movie I own. Obviously going to have to pop one in watch tonight to celebrate!

We are a week away from the final releases of 2025 getting announced. (A reminder, last December saw four releases: UHD upgrades for 8 1/2 and Paris, Texas and new spines of No Country for Old Men UHD and Eastern Condors Blu-ray.) With that in mind, here are my guesses for December's slate:

Birth
Testament
I Know Where I'm Going
The Last Wave

Testament! I like the cut of your jib.

I feel like Dog Day Afternoon is hitting December or January.

Yeah, I had seen a little bit about that, but you wouldn't even know it. There were a few off-kilter frames, etc, but hardly noticeable. They did a very good job.

I'd love to see a Criterion release of The Testament. I had figured Scream would have gone after it when Paramount opened up their doors to licensing again, but it seems like they didn't.

Still holding onto hope for the Kenji Misumi Sword Trilogy as well.

I talked to the programmer of the Post Apocalyptic spotlight on the Criterion Channel. We had a nice little discussion about whether Threads or Testament was the superior nuclear war film (Threads is kind of the ultimate in lacerating horror, but Testament is arguably more devastating in a personal way). Anyway, sounds like it had at least one advocate in the company.

A user on the AwardsWorthy forum was chatting with Peter Becker at the Criterion Van in Toronto and they asked him if Birth was going to be released, when he just smiled and said he couldn't say more at the moment. I guess that is a soft confirmation.

Also just found a post on Reddit where someone overheard a Criterion employee say that Network was coming next year.

Birth is an interesting film. Was hoping it wouldn't languish on DVD.

As for "big" titles, I'll take either Dog Day Afternoon or French Connection. I know it's too much to ask to get both the same month

Canada Still On A High...

…from my visit to the Criterion Mobile Closet at TIFF! Whirlwind weekend getaways are a thing of the past for me given the energy investiture required (I developed severe fatigue following cancer treatment many years ago now), so going down to Toronto truly required a unique and special motivation. I am delighted to report that the experience did not disappoint and was well, well worth the exertion. Forget DisneyWorld: that closet is my Magic Kingdom.

All of the Criterion staff on site at TIFF deserve to be highly commended, especially Ellen whose genuine kindness and generousity of spirit were clearly evident. The time she spent taking care of myself and others with accessibility needs was truly touching and an experience I will not soon forget in and of itself. A wonderful embodiment of Mr. Mulvaney's legacy and the film community he has built.

My picks: Klute, This Is Spinal Tap 4K, and The Wind Will Carry Us (my first foray into Iranian cinema, and Kiarostami's Close-Up was already sold out).
