Not to change the subject but does anyone love 3 Women and Z Enough to wish they were released on BLU?

What is a MFSL Gold CD? lol

That would be great for CC to release both versions of that film.

perhaps it didn't have my attention... either way, I'll give it another viewing.

I really like the pace of 3 Women and just the time period and how the film captured the American SW and just how simpler consumerism seemed to be. (I am totally reading into that last observation since I projected that into the time period itself and not a plot point)

I think it is Shelly Duvall's best work IMO

Just a side topic: As I enjoy the packaging of Armacord, I still somewhat prefer the durability of the plastic cases. Does anyone know if Criterion is now leaning towards the packaging of Seven Samurai and Armacord...or will plastic cases still be around?

+1 we need more Altman on blu!

Would be great if CC could get the rights to release "Nashville" (a possibilty since they have gotten rights for other Paramount films recently)

This thread is kind of useless. It has reached 1280 pages now and it's impossible to keep an overview. Why not start a separate thread for every BD release?

I've contacted Criterion with this question 10 days ago and did not get an answer. So much for the support of these high-priced editions...

Criterion tries to have the packaging of the BLUs to reflect the packaging of the DVD counterpart. With the exception of the early first titles like El Norte, Chungking Express, Bottle Rocket etc where the cardboard style cases were opened top to bottom and nothing near as nice as say the DVD style cardboard cases, so titles like Seven Samurai, Leopard, and Night of the Hunter.

I can only hope if they release MISHIMA that the cardboard case is as spiffy as the DVD one.

I will admit I love the cardbaord packaging of titles like The Leopard, but I wish the paper stock was a bit more thicker/ or more sturdy. Esp when Amazon ships them in a yellow bubble mailer.

Criterion isn't leaning one way or another for their packaging.

Amarcord, like Breathless, are both single-disc releases but contain thicker booklets that the plastic cases cannot accommodate. There's also the pressure for Criterion to release certain blu-ray upgrade films in the same style packaging that the DVD releases came in (i.e. Breathless, Amarcord, The Leopard, Seven Samurai, etc.). All of the multi-disc sets are also going to require cardboard packaging, as well, because Criterion doesn't have a 2-disc plastic case for their blu-rays.

Criterion's custom plastic Scanavo cases are going to be the norm for the majority of their releases.

I believe they like the durability of the plastic cases as well. Jon Mulvaney has emailed me, and others I believe, when asked about this topic. That's why they went away fromt he old cardboard digipak/slip case w/open top and bottom seen on their first 9 releases.

They use the Amarcord/Seven Samurai/Breathless/etc. packaging for 2 reasons: 2 disc sets and for films which have larger books that would not ordinarily fit in a plastic case. If you have seen them, you'll notice the Breathless and Amarcord books are much thicker than the standard booklets. That is why these 1-disc releases are in this style packaging.

EDIT: and what ccfixx said...

Sounds good. Just as long as those "original" cardboard cases don't return, I have no problem with what packaging they use. I personally love the bigger booklets, so would almost prefer the cardboard cases (even if they're not as durable as plastice...but the cardboard is thick enough to withstand at least some shelf wear). I find the information inside the booklets just something more to enjoy about each movie. When I finally purchased The Man Who Fell to Earth (not one of my favorites of the Criterion collection...perhaps requiring me to view it one more time) I was disappointed with the lack of pages in the supplied booklet Oh well.

Playtime's booklet is more akin to a leaflet.

And for supplements, Charade is terribly lacking.

Does that mean I don't value these films as much? Nope! Charade is one of my absolute favs, and am glad they didn't wait to release that one, or better yet, I was pleasantly surprised that it came out relatively quickly!

I haven't seen either of the PP, but I just added them to my instant queue.

I'll let you know what I think, when I have a chance to see them!

Mobile Fidelity also released audiophile vinyl recordings near the "end of life" for vinyl albums. Half Speed Masters that were pressed on a special type of Japanese vinyl called "Super Vinyl". They released a Beatles boxset that I bought back in the day for $250-$300.

What would be your reasoning for getting 2 copies of the same film? If you don't currently own the Fear and Loathing that Universal released, you should probably wait for the CC edition. It should have the extras that the Uni does not have. As far as I remember, the Uni has barely any. As for the PQ, we'll have to wait and see.

Easy Rider, on the other hand, I'm not sure how the Sony digibook version was in terms of extras and AQ/PQ. I heard the PQ was very similar to the BBS version.

But why you'd need 2 versions if you currently have none, I'm not sure. That's the way I read your post...that you had neither of the original releases for each film. Is that a correct assumption?
