Then she needs to take it back and learn again.
She prob learned about Kurosawa, Bergman, Chaplin, Spielberg, Breathless, 400 Blows, Citizen Kane, etc. This is what I call essential for film history- Georges Méliès René Clair (Under the Roofs of Paris) Aleksandr Dovzhenko (Arsenal) Sergei Eisenstein Roberto Rossellini (Germany Year Zero) Nicholas Ray Jean-Luc Godard (Les Carabiniers, La Chinoise, Histoire(s) du cinéma) Jean Renoir Kenji Mizoguchi Then you can do the others, like D.W. Griffith, John Ford, Fritz Lang, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Otto Preminger, John Cassavetes. This isn't a list of favs. This is a list of films and filmmakers that made film an artform, not just made "cool" movies. |

The hope would be that she loves pretty much all cinema (or just has an open minded approach) if she went so far as to get a film degree.
But from my experiences in school, this is far too optimistic of an outlook. |

I've been in classes where we were told to present a clip to the class to cover a topic and a student brings in "Dare Devil". (Thankfully, the whole class laughed at him). Last edited by ShellOilJunior; 03-14-2011 at 12:12 PM. |

Those films borrow plenty from films of 1900's-1990's. Heck it's fair enough you could call Battleship Potemkin basically the inspiration of most American films since The Wild Bunch came out in 1969. I keep thinking of Potemkin everytime I watch a music video-ish movie.

I wasn't going to say anything, but after seeing your rude response which doesn't even reflect my own admiration of film in general, (I was just trying to point out that not everyone HAS to admire classic film) it just further proves what I was going to say earlier. Here goes : The video the girl posted on Youtube is retarded, especially the way she acted. I will give you that, but she must read this thread because she is 100% right about the whole pretentious thing. That's how I feel. I'm sorry if I offend, but I just get this vibe that Criterion addicts think they are better than everyone. It's one thing to enjoy the history of cinema, but don't be a snob about it. What I'm trying to say is, just because these films are "classic" (and there is a lot of room for argument on what is considered classic here) or made by Criterion, doesn't make it a good film, and it doesn't make it better than any non-Criterion film. And it certainly doesn't make you a better person for owning all of them either. At the end of the day, they're mostly just expensive movies that people have never heard of until Criterion came along. Sorry but I needed to vent. Thank you and have a good day. I have notice that a good portion of the young generation (don't jump on me I am not saying they are all like that) seem to have a very hard time watching older type of movies. Some of it may be that they have grown up at a time of very quick fast cut where everything move's fast in a none stop movement. Movies, music, video game, even television. I can see very well how they would have a hard time with older releases. I was watching Oyū-sama last night from director Kenji Mizoguchi and I just kept wondering how this young MTC generation would handle a movie like that. Long scenes where the camera is not moving, no music to bring up the drama...everything is left to the story, the actors and the cinematography. Most of them would probably not manage to make it into the first 30 minutes.
To be fair however, I also know quite older people who could not either. It might be just the times we are in and one's personality? |

I chalk that up to those who have never seen said film making such a comment?
