Seriously... it's not like Criterion only releases 3 or 4 blu's per month like they used to. They release like 6-7 now. All the crying over Rushmore is just crazy. I don't care much for that film, but I hardly think they're holding up Chaplin because of it.

I really wish it would've been The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.

Chad, its the other films that Criterion has never released or no one may ever release that should come before another Wes release. This is what the beef is about. Honestly, it seems that Criterion has to please the Anderson shills on a regular basis to keep them interested in the 'blind buys' they will make later. A smart business move and good for the resale market too...

Yes, not everyone who buys Criterions is a film snob.

Hello everyone. I've been a member here for a couple of years now but never really waded into the forums pool. I'm an avid Movie Nut and collector. Just recently watched Homicide, The Thin Red Line, and Spoorloos (aka The Vanishing) all for the first time. Enjoyed the first and loved the last two.

Really looking forward to discussing a few films with you guys and learning a bit about your favorite movies along the way.

Heh, while I knew I would be pleased for Rushmore's release, I am surprised how satisfying all this bellyaching is to read.

It is like when a really annoying toddler is running around screaming outside your window, and then trips and falls.

Oh come on, where was everyone a month ago when Life During Wartime came out? Is Fat Girl or Fishtank truly more important than Ivan the Terrible? Is that why everyone let that injustice slip by?

No one says anybody has to like anything, but no one complaining on a message board is defending truth and justice and sanctity of film history.

Anyone who thinks his/her opinion is the truth and who asserts that any one film is more objectively "important" than another is what I consider the very definition of a film snob. And that's what I'm seeing here today from more than one user.

Besides, we're expecting Wild Strawberries, Rules of the Game, Three Colors trilogy, a Chaplin film, etc. in November. It's ridiculous to see gripes about Rushmore (which is beloved by many anyway) in the midst of that company. November looks to be a hell of a month, and no one should be complaining.

But I would love to have Ivan The Terrible on Blu-ray Well I would prefer Alexander nevsky first but I sure won't say no to Ivan The Terrible either.

Ya, I'm not a big Wes Anderson film by any stretch. But there have been FAR worse Criterion releases than his films. Life During Wartime was one of my worst blind buys. Fat Girl turned out to be pretty lousy too. But somehow Wes Anderson releases seem to get most of the hate around here.

Maybe Wes Andeson is the George Lucas of the Criterion thread

M'eh, I would have preferred Zissou. Not a huge Wes Anderson fan. I really like Zissou and Fox, but disliked Tenenbaums, and have yet to actually see Rushmore.

I can also think of worse Criterion BD releases/future releases than anything Anderson has done.

BTW, Zazie dans le metro was fantastic. It was a great blind buy.

I always enjoy Zazie as well. I must have seen it the first time when I was 8 or 9 (hard to recall for sure) somewhere in the mid 70's. It as some strange characters and settings but it's so well made and fun to watch.

I think you should check out Rushmore sometime before November. I think it has the best acting performance of Bill Murray's career, the best photography of any Anderson picture (tied with Zissou), the funniest plot of any Anderson film (in a dry humor sort of way), and the best soundtrack of any Anderson film (e.g., "I Am Waiting" by the Stones and "Ooh La La" by the Faces). The closing shot of the film is so perfect that Juno copied it (blah). Rushmore and then Zissou are definitely the two best WA films, IMO.
