Seriously eyed Seven Samurai, but I figure Criterion HAS to release that on BD at some point (barring them losing the rights first, in which case I'll just get the DVD at that point).
I'd agree, surely a Seven Samurai blu-ray can't be that far off. Worth waiting for in my opinion.

The one DVD I am thinking about definitely getting is Made In The U.S.A., which probably won't be out on blu for a long time, and I can get for about $8 with this sale.

Went at lunch and got The Wages Of Fear. Coupon worked again, perfectly fine, got my second $13 movie no problem. Loving this. Going back after work to get one more. Not sure what yet though.

Just bought Monterrey Pop, Monsoon Wedding, Playtime and Kagemusha on Blu and Nikkatsu Noir and Postwar Kurosawa for $140.97 after 50% off, 10% off for membership, $5 off for any DVD, $5 off for purchases over $50. The same exact order on Amazon comes to a total of $268.18 with tax and shipping. I know I could have saved another $20 or so if I had reprinted the coupon and purchased each title individually, but I just couldn't resist. Going back later tonight with another batch of coupons to snag some more titles before anyone else gets their hands on them.

1. It's called Made in U.S.A.
2. Don't look for a Breathless out of this one, because you won't find it.

This is a film about references. Nothing but references. Historic, film, political, and personal references. As you watch it, you can sense that there is no plot really what-so-ever. It feels as if he made this film for himself, which was probably true with the references of his divorce with Anna Karina. I advise you to watch the features on the disc before watching the film to help with the 100's of references in the film. Godard always used politics in his films, but really enhanced those views in 1966. Made in U.S.A was a start of those films (my favs of Godard), "Made in U.S.A.", "2 or 3 Things I Know About Her", "la Chinoise", and "Weekend" to name a few.

I am not saying don't get it because I love this film (along with his other 1966-1967 works as are my favs) but I am just saying it is not the Anna Karina/Godard Band of Outsiders days most people like of his.

If you are getting Made in U.S.A. (I hope you are) try to get 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her as well. Also if you like these films of his, "Tout Va Bien" is another Godard from Criterion that is great.

Monsoon Wedding is priced $42.99 at Best Buy also... I have no clue where that get that pricing but it is a purchasing and or input issue with Best Buy. Really sad... Barnes and Noble is cheaper just at reg price they at least do a 10% off for 39.99 or more DVDs.

I picked up Grey Gardens Box set for 19.00 ish with 5.00 coupon and also grabbed Z at another store for 13.00 something with 5.00 off coupon. ( I spent over 1,200.00 during last Barnes Criterion sale and used 25% off coupons during that sale made a killing but I don't have the energy or money this time around haha. ( I do have Downhill Racer on order however.

I've gone a little crazy with this sale so far. Unfortunately, no B&N that is close to me (around an hour and 15 minutes away). But I did pick up the Wings of Desire and decided now is the time to strike on the box sets.

I wanted to buy "Red Shoes", "Beauty and the Beast" and the second printing of "Seven Samurai" but I have a strong feeling these two will be released on Blu-ray from Criterion. So, with only one Blu-ray on B&N, it gave me too much time too look around and get hypnotized by titles I really have wanted for so long which I purchased most of them. The only titles that I was going to do a blind buy of were L'Avventura, L'Eclisse, Breathless, Pandora's Box, Juliet of the Spirits, Jules and Jim and Symbiopsychotaxiplasm but I figured I spent too much already.

I wanted to get the Eisenstein: The Sound Years but what if "Alexander Nevsky" was released on Blu-ray and people got the soundtrack that they wanted? So, I hesitated. Also, contemplated on the Bergman box sets since those are quite expensive but decided to go for Carl Theodor Dreyer in the end.

Here is what I purchased:

Wings of Desire
John Cassavetes - Five Films
Amarcord
Two Films by Chris Marker: La Jetee/Sans Soleil
Eclipse Series - Larisa Shepitko
Scenes from a Marriage
The Rules of the Game
Grey Gardens Set
Mon Oncle
Carl Theodor Dreyer Collection
The Adventures of Antoine Doinel
Simon Del Desierto
4 by Agnes Varda
Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy
Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales

Well this sucks. I had forgotten that my local Barnes and Noble doesn't have a movie section (books only). I sure do hope they get their act together on the website. I was really hoping to get The Seventh Seal and The 400 Blows.

Me and a few others called earlier today and when I called they said it was the first they heard of it and that they would e-mail the department. She did say that the website and the stores are separate but if people are purchasing it in-store, it should have been the same online.

It does suck for those of us who don't have a B&N nearby... Hopefully they do make the change. Update: Just read that the sale ends on November 23rd.

Most Criterion titles are good. Many even considered great movies; however the 19.99 sale price is the price they should be ALL the time. NO single regular release of a film, BD, DVD or otherwise is worth 40 bucks and change. Hell, new copies of Casablanca, Citizen Kane and The Godfather on DVD can be found for well under 25 bucks (as well as their individual BD counterparts, when they're released.) 40 bucks makes sense for a limited/exclusive set with some cool swag, but for a regular 1 to 2-disc title, it's ridiculous!

Picked up Kagemusha and The Third Man (clear case), today. Now I'm done with Criterion on BD until they release some more Kurosawa, Fritz Lang's M or Thief of Bagdad in glorious HD.

Criterion adds more features than your regular $20 movie. Also most of these titles wouldn't be in the U.S. if wasn't for them, so they can sell them as much as they want, they know people will buy them if they are the only ones selling the title.

I forgot who mentioned it, but someone got Third Man on Blu at a Barnes and Noble store in Iowa in Des Moines. So i call them and they said that their 1 copy was taken, so instead they are going to ship one from their factory for me next week. So on my way home back to Illinois i guess i have to stop buy and purchase it, they even said the 50% deal will be available for 2 more weeks.
--I think ill buy Wings of Desire also while im there.

Thank you for the title correction (I'm just proud to have gotten that close on memory alone for a movie I haven't seen) and the thoughts about the film.

I've not seen much Godard yet, honestly. Just Band Of Outsiders so far. So I don't really have any particular expectations for what a Godard movie is or should be per se. I do know that he has an extensive catalogue, and while it may make more sense to go for say Breathless over something like Made In USA, seeing a slightly off the beaten path piece of his resume appeals to me. It is why I saw The Bad Sleep Well long before even seeing Seven Samurai.

And the artwork for Made In USA grabbed me. I think the first place I saw it advertised was in Film Comment, and from that moment my interest was there.

Anyway, didn't get to go back tonight for another Blu-Ray. I decided to skip the store near my office and head to the one on 17th street in the city. Except I was off by a good ten blocks. The store is on 7th street. Oops! Didn't have time to backtrack, so that was that. Will be hitting the store near my office again come Thursday.

Again, I wasn't trying to pull you away from Made in USA (I love Godard's 66'-67' period), so hopefully you didn't think I was. I just know alot of people who don't like Made in USA and didn't want you to get turned off by his work because you probably didn't understand it. That's all.

Hope you enjoy it as I did. Oh and be sure to check out the features. Really good stuff.

On November 1st I picked up 'The Third Man' and paid retail for it. This morning I brought it back with receipt for price adjustment. I also snagged, 'The Last Emperor', and 'Curious Case...'. The store didn't have 'Wings of Desire' so I ordered it. In addition I had them hold, 'The Seventh Seal' for Friday.

As for the rest of the collection it will have to wait until the next 50% sale at Barnes & Nobles.

wow, just finished watching 400 Blows for the first time ever

what a masterpiece!! easily 5/5 stars. everything from the acting (the kids were fantastic, the lead kid but also the other kids in the class, as well as the kids filmed during the puppet show...pure awesomeness). direction was also flawless, i loved the long cut scenes, especially the running scene near the end and the intro scene with eiffel tower going in and out. i can definitely see this have great replay value!

most of all: this is a "great" movie because i can't see any human being sitting through this film without having a major shift in perspective regarding the themes presented. most films i sit through and they have little or no impact on my perspective. only a few rare gems like this one can really make a mark on you.

Hehe...now you will want to watch the sequels via the boxset "The Adventures of Antoine Doinel" which you can get cheap from the Criterion sale.
