I thought Charade was a very solid movie and enjoyable. It was also my first Criterian movie and a blind buy and incidentally my first Grant movie. I thought the plot moved along nicely and was by no means stale. After watching the movie I am of the firm belief that AH can act more with just her eyes than most actresses nowadays using everything at their disposal.

All IMO of course.
It is a sale that takes place every year in Barnes & Nobles the months of July and November. They cut down the price of all Criterion releases by a half making all the titles quite affordable . I picked up 9 titles in the last sale, something I would never do without the existance of one (At least on Criterion releases, which are always extremely expensive )

Well, IMNSHO, I agree, especially about AH's acting abilities...

Someone else pointed out the 50% off in July and November, but it's actually better than just 50% off. 50% off just gets you to $19.99 per single disc blu-ray. That's very good and matches Amazon's best efforts, but with coupons Barnes and Nable gets it even lower.

You can become an B&N member, which automatically gets you an extra 10% off (in store only). On top of that there are also internet coupons and store coupons which can net you yet another 10-20% off. IN addition there were certain unique coupons like $8 off a $40 blu-ray that you can sometimes stack with the other coupons.

In the end I got about 20 Criterion blu-rays from the last sale, and most were about $14.xx using 20% coupon and member discount combined with the sale. Some people reported getting as low as $10 each if their cashiers were really generous with applying/stacking coupons (going that far seemed a little questionable though, and is likely to ruin the coupon train in the future IMO).

There is a 70's horror movie that stars Tony Curtis about a woman that gives birth to a full grown Native American.

Same here. I suppose I could always use one of the replacement cases from the Criterion website and download a sleeve to fit that particular case. If I didn't do that, then that case would bug the crap out of me because it doesn't match.

I know the movie you're describing, also XTRO and Species 2 have a similar scene.

I agree with you Octagon - I have always felt that Charade was rather ordinary as a thriller or a romantic comedy. I feel it's in no way comparable to later Hitchcock as I have read here and there - North by Northwest is probably the most obvious comparison given the casting, but NBNW has the Hitchcock visual flair and a greater sense of menace. And I feel the 'chemistry" between Grant and Hepburn is kinda weird - doesn't quite ring true.

Having said that, Charade looks nice on screen, and I have the blu on its way to me from the BN sale.

Gotta agree there. Compare The Hangover to some of the 80s greats like Night Shift, Blues Brothers, Planes Trains and Automobiles, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, to name just a few. While I liked The Hangover and found it pretty funny, it does fit your description.

Forgive me for straying off topic into non-Criterion territory...... I have a 20-something co-worker who raves about the latest comedy he has seen, but has never seen any 80s comedies, much less anything older. I lent him my DVDs of the four above. It took him awhile to finally get around to watching them, but when he did, he and his girlfriend devoured them all in one weekend and he handed them back to me on the following Monday with a big smile saying he could not believe these movies were so funny since they were over twenty years old.

Unfortunately, I do not like him enough to lend him my Criterions to really open his mind.

Ahhhhh... you're talking about "The Manitou." But the Native American grows out from a tumor on her neck. He's not born the old-fashioned method.

I've just found out that there is a Criterion blu-ray of In The Realm Of The Senses.
In all the pages I've read here, I don't think it's ever been mentioned.
[I'm not going back to read the first 1000 pages ]
I saw it many years ago and liked it, but I don't see myself getting the blu-ray.
Has anyone else picked it up?

I was actually suggesting it should have been the other way in the movie,
[Show spoiler]at the end Benjamin should have been an adult-sized baby instead of shrinking back to a regular baby (Which made him a baby-sized twice)
but my double hyphenated words were probably confusing since they could be read either way.

Your suggestion is actually how it happens in Fitzgerald's short story though, starting out as a 70 year old man who can speak and everything. (He conveniently skips over those birth details though)

I have the Criterion's Blu-ray of this film. I bought it since I do like the film after watching it (in a crappy dvd copy) and was very intrigued with the story, true as it is, and Oshima's direction (and his insistence on actual sexual contact). It fascinated me further after reading the circumstances that occurred after the film's release wherein the actress was pretty much ostracized, director being charged with obscenity & film being banned pretty much in every country.

Given the lavish (and all but universal) praise it gets I imagine I'll give it a look at some point but it's not real high on the list right now.
Interesting. I actually had the exact opposite reaction, although maybe that was because the music that was featured in the Criterion trailer reminded me of my trip to India five years ago. (Despite my ambivalent reactions to India, my experience also contributed to my being pleased by The Darjeeling Limited, even though I'm not a Wes Anderson fan.)

I had spent a couple of weeks being driven around Rajasthan, and the drive frequently played recordings of Hindi ballads. The Music Room brought back some decent memories. Give it a shot - I think you'll enjoy the film.

You've seen the movie and liked it but don't want to buy the BluRay. OK, I'm with you so far.

But then you don't think it has been mentioned here and you're not going to look (or use the search function) to confirm this thought but want to know if anyone else has picked it up. It was a short night and a long day and I'm not understanding what you're after.
I was actually searching through Criterion blu-rays on Amazon.com and was surprised to see it listed. I thought it was a mistake at first, because I had no idea it was available on blu-ray.
I was just wondering why it never gets mentioned.
After following this forum for about 800 pages, pretty much everything has been discussed, but I've never seen a word about In The Realm Of The Senses.
It's not a complaint and I didn't really feel the need to search out previous discussions. I was just a little surprised that it receives no love and no hate. That's why I asked if anyone had bought it. I'd be just as interested if people dislike or object to the film and don't want to buy it.

Just finished watching Secret Sunshine. Beautiful Korean film. It's nice to have this put out by Criterion. They did a wonderful job on the transfer.
p.s. almost didn't buy it because it comes in a ridiculously un-colorful clear case.

Was shocked when I opened the door today and my copy of Battle of Algiers was on the steps. Nice Job B & N since the estimated shipping day was Sept 7th. Great deal from the one day sale at B & N and I am very excited to have this BD in my collection.

It seems this kind of things happend frequently in this forums . We can't stop discussing about Bergman or Kurosawa while Kiarostami, Oshima, Tati, and the likes go almost unnoticed .

Well, it was also released over two years ago. Add to that the fact that it's not exactly a prime candidate for blind buy recommendations and it's not that hard to understand the lack of current chatter.
