Actually, that does apply to me. There were a few movies that I was on the fence about that I ended up passing on that I will possibly get during the next sale in November. Well, that reason and I had bought enough during the sale that I didn't really want to get any others.

I was planning to blind buy it in November, but with the unexpected sale at B&N, I decided not to wait. I am sure I will love it. Slowly but surely I am delving deeper into the world of older foreign films. I am really high on Kino right now and also plan to pick up Strike this week.

I don't make any covers myself, but I love the effort people put in to them.
I don't know if any of you guys follow Criterion-related stuff on Twitter, but this question was posted by Criterion Cast today:

Good God I want The Killing (along with about thirty other Criterions).

My student budget (non-existent apart from tax returns and the next two weeks of part-time work) only allow for certain movies, and expensive Criterion Blus aren't unfortunately on my list. The only expensive luxury I'm getting before Christmas is Star Wars; everything else has to be cheap cheap cheap! (I'm from Canada, so B&N's current deal isn't worth it unless it worked out be a minimum of 50% off before shipping).

Sorry for the double-post - didn't mean to do that - but I would love to see what would come out of a contest like that.

A lot of Blu-ray and Criterion fanatics are exceedingly creative, and it's hard to imagine the results being disappointing.

The art they have for the Gojira/Godzilla on Hulu are both fine by me although the green text for Gojira did strike me as an odd choice. They are simple, could be interesting to see what could come out of this.

Some Criterions have come up for sale at a used shop here in Ontario.
I thought I'd post some of the best deals and the price (in CAD, of course) and get some feedback from people quickly before I ordered anything.
I'm considering:
8 1/2: $30.99
Au Revoir Les Enfants: $30.99
Kiss Me Deadly: $27.99
The Sweet Smell of Success: $30.99

Now, Sweet Smell of Success can be had new for only a couple dollars more on Amazon atm so I might just get that.

Having never seen any of these movies, I'd appreciate anybody's input. Picking them up used is about $8 cheaper than getting them new (in Canada, keep in mind). Anybody have any thoughts?

You can get all of those for roughly the same price brand new, including shipping from both B&N and Amazon US right now. Only issue with B&N is their slow shipping, it takes anywhere from 2 weeks to a month. The dollar is also going back up, it's 1.02 right now. If these were under 20 used, it would be a better deal, but these are the new prices Canadians can get if they order online from the US, so not really a deal.

They're all good choices. I have watched them all, and the only one I don't own is kiss Me Deadly. I'd go with SSoS, as it was my fave out of the titles you listed.

Before anyone says anything, I was arguing about the price of NEW releases, and people quibbling about the cost. These are USED titles that are being sold for the same price as what a Canadian can buy for NEW by importing from the US.

Woah! B&N is having a pretty fantastic sale right now
Yeah, even with shipping, once I add the 7% off coupon code, I'm saving about $10 for two movies. 2 might be in my budget (if I can scrounge up more cash in the next couple of days) and I might spring on one or two of them.

The question now is - which two?

Decisions, decisions.

You were absolutely right though; much cheaper to order from the US. Are these fairly typical prices for Criterion or is this just because of the sale?

Just received Blow Out this morning - my 3rd import and Criterion title to boot - accompaning Night of The Hunter and Wages Of Fear. Still got lots of catching up to do but I imagine Battle of The Algiers and Days of Heaven will be next on the list.

Sweet Smell of Success and Au Revoir Les Enfants, then if you can splurge, go with 8 1/2 and Kiss Me Deadly.

Edit: My apologies to Kurosawa haters for posting this, but I think The Bad Sleep Well is in serious need of an upgrade. I watched it last night, and thought it was pretty awesome for a modern film noir twist on Hamlet.

The sale's on for 2 weeks. Between B&N and Amazon, Criterions range from 19-80 bucks, depending on sales, box sets, and what not. The most common price I've seen outside of a sale is about 28-32 bucks before shipping and taxes for a single disc title. Amazon has a few that are around the 20-22 dollar mark permanently though.

If you don't get all of them, there's another sale in November, where Criterions are 50% off. This sale is only 40%. Also, the tax B&N charges us is only the 5% GST, which makes me happy, as I don't have to pay 15% HST like I normally do. Their shipping is about 1-2 bucks less than Amazon, but the 5% tax they charge usually makes up that difference. Like I said though, their shipping to Canada is slow, slow, slow.

Amazon, on the other hand, doesn't charge sales tax, but they do charge an import fee on orders/items over 25 bucks. You usually, although not always, get that import tax back two months later.

The only Criterion that I can see that is a major price difference in Canada from the US is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. However, Amazon Canada is sold out of the title for some reason, and you can only get jacked up prices from Market Sellers now.

Just added it to my dvd queue. I don't know if you've seen Throne of Blood but if samurai Macbeth might be your thing it's well worth a look.

Best Lady Macbeth ever.

It's on my list to re-watch. I watched it before I developed an appreciation for subs and Kurosawa.

Tomorrow (for members), the first of two 20%-off-a single-title codes go live, the 2nd one you have to wait till Saturday. No pre-orders.

Codes availble where they Talk about DVDs.

Au Revoir Les Enfants: $30.99
Kiss Me Deadly: $27.99
The Sweet Smell of Success: $30.99
My order:
8 1/2 - one of the best films about filmmaking ever made. Terrific acting, great cinematography...just plain great scenes. Fellini was a genius
Sweet Smell of Success - sharply written and shot in a definitive b&w noir style. I also love the NYC of this period (late '50s/early'60s)
Kiss Me Deadly - a solid noir and decent blind-buy candidate, but I put the others (and several other Criterions) ahead of it.

Au Revoir les Enfants - I haven't seen this but it's terrifically well-received, and is a recommended blind-buy

Au Revoir les Enfants is my favorite of those 4. You can read reviews all over the net so I won't go into details beyond I found this one to be very real and emotionally powerful.
