The first "Muppet Movie" was directed by James Frawley (of "Monkees" fame), and is the only one so far to have captured the particularly silly/sentimental rhythm of the original Show.

...Me, I'm also partial to 1985's "Sesame Street: Follow That Bird", but Jim didn't direct that one either.
Thanks for posting this, especially the part about James Frawley being a Monkees director. I don't have to now. James Frawley was even in a couple episodes of The Monkees. Unfortunately, Frawley had nothing to do with Head, so no interviews with him on the Criterion disc.

Frank Oz directed Muppets Take Manhattan. I find it sentimental. My mother hates me for buying it again. It was a torture device for her when I was a small child, as I would always play Muppets Take Manhattan, or The Little Mermaid. Sometimea I'd watch something else, like B&TB, or The Muppet Movie, but it was usually Muppets Take Manhattan or The Little Mermaid.

Brian Henson directed Muppets' Christmas Carol, which wasn't too bad. It and Muppet Treasure Island were the last halfways decent ones before they went to hell in a handbasket after Jim Henson died. I own Muppets From Space, blind bought it actually, and kind of wish I hadn't. Unlike the others, it's not going to be upgraded.

I finally got around to watching my copy of Solaris. It's not only the first time I've watched this movie, but it is the first time I've watched anything by Tarkovsky.

I thought it was great even if I couldn't really tell you what it was about.

Now I want to see more of his films, and I hope Criterion releases more of them.

What should I check out next?

I wasn't intending to imply JH directed every Muppet movie. But I do think that Henson's proclivity for showing off his puppets at the expense of the film wasn't negated by having other directors around. It isn't like that guy had a small personality or was shy about his opinion.

Muppets Take Manhattan I really disliked as a kid, but I think I'll have to watch it again at some point soon. It has been a while since I have seen any of the Muppet movies. I remember catching Follow That Bird on tv and finding it good fun.

Whatever happened to Sunday Bloody Sunday? Wasn't that a clue on the drawing that came out early this year?

It seem the consensus is that the clue was actually two clues, one for Le Cercle Rouge and one for People on Sunday.

I finally got around to watching Secret Sunshine. I must say the performance of Jeon Do-yeon is one of the most disturbing portrayals I have seen in a recent film for some time. It is always a treat to see an actor in complete control of their craft.

The film was quite an emotional juggernaut, and I felt spent at it's conclusion. (a devastating character study to say the least)

I've been hearing rumours about The Following for a loooong time from Criterion. In all honesty, I'm starting to doubt it will ever come.

Off the subject, but speaking of lame overexposed fanboy recommendations that don't come within miles of a chance at the real Janus/Rialto Criterion:

We Kurosawa fans were hoping that Warner would keep up their end of the catalog and do a nice Blu of "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" (seeing as their HD cable/streaming print looks pretty spiffy) as a companion to Criterion's Kagemusha and Ran--
Official news this week?: FORGET IT. Warner announced the movie would be coming back in print, but only as an MOD catalog Warner Archive title. (Which, although nicely produced in and of itself, in studio terms is tantamount to their $5 bin at Wal-mart.)
I'd e-mailed Criterion asking, in effect, "Hey, maybe that means you could grab the Blu cross-licensing for a song now?--Why should other studios release color-Kurosawa on Blu, anyway?"

(Now, y'see, if you're going to bug the studio with fan requests, you COULD be spending your time doing that.)

Just wrote an article for what I think is a very overlooked film on these forums in the Collection, and that is Nicholas Roeg's Walkabout. I've only just started scratching the surface of his films, but between this and The Man Who Fell to Earth, he is shaping up to be a favourite. Enjoy:
