The problem is, very few complained the same way when Fear & Loathing was "re-released" by Criterion... maybe because it's considered a "cooler" film (although Traffic blows it out of the water, narrative-wise)... but it's pretty hypocritical of some to bash Traffic for already having a release, when they don't other titles. A re-release is a re-release... the title doesn't matter.
The problem with Criterion now is they know that the Facebook crowd wants all the 1980-now films in their catalog re-released due to their repetitive comments on their page. They know these titles will sell well because the box says Criterion, even though there is already a BD release out there for much less money. It's brilliant marketing and hopefully gains funds for better projects. The discussion is that it's this 'sheep' mentality by these Facebook posters that holds back other releases that have defined what Criterion has been over the years, a company that releases films others won't take a gamble on. As I have beaten this dead horse many times, they have rights to all the Chaplin films, why are they not being released at a steadier pace?? No one else is going to release them....

I don't fully agree with that. Yes, the newer, "bigger" titles will possibly sell more copies and bring revenue to the company — after all, that's what a company needs to exist — but I don't think it has changed the definition of Criterion at all. They still continue to release a mixture of classics, foreign classics, and some pretty obscure films, with newer films peppered in.

Why don't they release Chaplin films faster? Probably because they all need better restoration. That doesn't happen overnight. I assume the master for Traffic was already done - probably form when they released it the first time - so it's a "quicker" release to help fill their slate while they DO work on over films that take longer to prepare. If you want quality, you can't rush them.

Any company has to bow to commercial pressure now and then to stay in business. Some call it selling out, but those people have no idea how real business works. Sure, they could nix all commercial titles, and 1 of 2 things would most likely happen: 1) they would go out of business; or 2) their revenue wold drop, and they would only be able to release 1 or 2 titles a month instead of 4-5. But if that's what some people want...

I'm pretty sure this is correct. Mine is in the regular clear case FWIW, but I'm pretty sure I got it off Amazon.

The upgrade of Traffic looks like a nice release, and the Godzilla disc looks very nice and loaded with supplements.

Been on a Criterion buying spree of late. Bought a couple of days ago:

3 Women
The Four Feathers
Harakiri

Bought today:

Mystery Train
Black Orpheus
My Life as a Dog
If...

I have 5 on the way from Amazon.ca

I bought the MGM Blu of Straw Dogs as well. I wish Criterion had the rights to the film. Still have the Criterion DVD release that I don't plan on selling.

THIS !!! When I first saw the Traffic announcement yesterday, I thought "OMG, Another Tati release!!!!!", then I saw it was Soderbergh's Traffic and was left hugely dissapointed. I don't hate Soderbergh, or his place in the Collection, but seeing this being the only upgrade left me a little bit confused at first. With some many other titles yet to be released in the format (Traffic already has a release by Universal), it just isn't fair .

I feel the same way. The pace of upgrades being as slow as it is, to get only one for January - and for that one to already be out on blu-ray - is what disappoints me. Would not have minded Traffic getting upgraded if there had been a few more to go along with it.

You should also look around for coupons around that time and possibly the trial membership. Last sale I was getting them for $16 per movie with a coupon and the membership.

As a question, why did Tati's Trafic went OOP? It is surprising cause it was a fairly new title in the Collection.
