Would love to see The Night Poter on Criterion blu... especially since their only edition is non-anamorphic.

Yeah, it only won 4 Oscars - Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Editing... but hey, it's not worth your time. It must be terrible with those credentials, and obviously a film to skip.

And how is it disappointing, when it's already in their catalog and been on Criterion DVD for years?

Thumbs up

bagged The Third Man OOP Criterion BLU-RAY at my local Goodwill, FOR ONLY $2, it has some fingerprints (but NO scratches) but they should wipe off with no probs, but it has no artwork or insert/booklet, I found it in a clear DVD case sitting with the other DVD's. I'm pretty sure I can order a new case with the artwork for $5 from Criterion, $6 +tax for a great very rare oop HTF blu-ray, I can live w/out the booklet!

Third Man went OOP first, I think. I still have my original digibook case, I can sell you that for the same price if you can't find the other one.

Terrible? Eh, maybe not. Shallow? Trite? Largely pointless? Yes.

Benicio was definitely good and it was pretty enough to look at but on a substantive level there was very little 'there' there. To the extent there was any substance at all it was limited to preaching to the 'war on drugs is a failure' choir (who, to Soderberg's credit, most certainly ate it up).

I too am of the opinion that the resources devoted to a second BD release of Traffic could have probably been better spent elsewhere. In that sense it was definitely a disappointing choice.

Traffic is shallow and largely pointless? That's a baffling statement to me. It's also pretty far removed from being "preachy," despite its subject matter. It maintains a high degree of objectivity and never seeks to provide answers or reasons for the drug problem in this country. Some consider that to be a flaw, on the opposite end of the spectrum from your gripe. For me, it's something that separates the movie from many others that deal with drugs--it shows the affect drugs have, but doesn't attempt to interject personal viewpoints.

Despite my love of the film, I do agree with your last statement that it's a disappointing choice. I agree that the resources could have been better spent elsewhere, due to the fact that there is already a pretty good domestic blu of the film. That being said, there are many releases that I think fall into the "resources could have been better spent elsewhere" category. At least in this case it's a film that I think is deserving of Criterion, even if not necessarily an upgrade.

I woudn't say that the Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay was shallow, trite and pointless, but okay. Seems like Hollywood didn't think so. But I guess if completely shallow and trite crap like Pulp Fiction can also win Best Screenplay, then anything goes.

I am not a fan of Traffic, in fact, I have disliked pretty much everything I've seen by Soderbergh, however, if they need to release it as Criterion to boost their sales and be able to expand their releases of blu-ray's, then by all means release it.

I don't really follow the argument that Traffic winning a few Oscars validates it's brilliance...Crash won best picture and adapted screenplay and that is the biggest pile of trash I've ever seen.

Or maybe I'm just bitter since when I heard that Traffic was being released I thought they meant Tati's Trafic.

Oh it's not.. but people like to use that argument only when it's convenient to films they like. Like, say Pulp Fiction, which was utter garbage. And while I liked Crash, Brokeback should've won Best Picture that year, easily. Ditto Social Network over the film that no one even talks about today... yet they still talk about Fincher's film. Mira Sorvino, Cher, Marissa Tomei, Hurt Locker... more winners that shouldn't have been. Oh well.

As others have said as well, Oscars mean nothing to me. Rarely does a favorite film of mine get Oscar attention.
Like I said, I've never seen the film. When I said it was disappointing, it's because there is already a Blu-ray release of it. When I said it seemed like it wasn't worth the time, it's because that was the general reaction here when the announcement was made. It seems most people here don't care very much about it. Some love it, most aren't excited though.

I don't trust the general reaction here the same as I don't trust Oscar. Especially when half of the negative reaction comes form people, like yourself, who havent even seen it to judge.

The problem is, very few complained the same way when Fear & Loathing was "re-released" by Criterion... maybe because it's considered a "cooler" film (although Traffic blows it out of the water, narrative-wise)... but it's pretty hypocritical of some to bash Traffic for already having a release, when they don't other titles. A re-release is a re-release... the title doesn't matter.

Should be the regular clear plastic case. I don't think Kagemusha was ever released in any other packaging.
