As far as we're concerned, we're not supposed to know how it was filmed. So don't let that cloud your judgement. We're not supposed to be privy to how products are made. All that matters is the end result. Imagine we applied that to everything!!!?? "Hey, how was that bar of soap made? Hey, how much time went into making those mattresses? Yo, how long did it take to write and record that album? G-funk, how long was that medicine in clinical trials? Hey, how long did they work on designing that Samsung tv!?" Who cares!? If the end result works for you, that's all that matters. "Hey, I hate this soap. But now that I learned that it took 11 years to make, I'm going to like it" |

Actually, with consumers looking to be more and more aware as to how things are made, what the production processes, which materials are used, how ethical is the company, etc etc... your post seems like it can't be further away from what a non-negligible amount of customers are actually looking forward to know.
I also dont believe the fact it was shot over 11 years that makes the movie good. It's how it transcribes on the screen. There's a sense of smoothness in its pace, in viewing characters growing up, maturing, making them feeling close to us, like if it's helping us to know them deeper and deeper, bringing the viewer inside the movie. I dont care it took 11 years to produce as a technical fact. I like the end result on the screen. |

C'mon. - Of course we should be concerned with how some products we buy are made. For example, our food, or "what's in the paint I'm using to paint my child's wall?" etc. Making sure there's no lead or poison or whatever. But let's be real. This movie is art. You only need to look at the end result. It doesn't matter how long it took to make. It doesn't matter how long it took to paint the Mona Lisa, either. That won't make you or anybody like the painting any more or less. "If he took five years to paint it, I'd hang it on my wall. But if he only took 5 days to paint it, then I don't care, I don't like it" That's the logic I'm hearing. If there's a nice leather jacket you want, does it matter if the designer spent three years on its concept or three hours? No. You only need to concern yourself with the end product. |

Yeah, I know : art isnt the same than daily products. In some respect, I like a lot David Lynch's stance about movies, about how a viewer should remain totally passive with a movie : just view it and that's it, dont pick a scene, dont pause, etc.
But about Boyhood's 11 years production, I always felt many "naysayers" put this forward while, actually, the technicity of it isnt what impressed people who liked it, but rather the end result (very simply). |

It's interesting that the specs mention a new 2k scan rather than 4k. Is that a good thing? I'm assuming that the whole movie was shot in 16mm from the get go? Maybe Linklater suspected that moviemaking technology would change so much in 12 years so hedged his bets by using 16mm from the start, even though digital filming was already commonly used for several low budget Indies as far back as 2002 when he started the project.
