Hey SB, World on a Wire looks awesome, I hope you don't mind if I put it off until March, because I've already reached my BD limit for the month of February, Lady and the Tramp and Anatomy of a Murder. I'm cutting back to a max of 2 BDs a month for the most part, as I need a new car.

Super excited for Anatomy of a Murder and World on a Wire!
Actually, it's a $30 price tag, which falls in line with their releases of Makioka Sisters and Identitfication of a Woman. Which is perfectly fine by me. $15 at the next B&N 50% is gold for high-def Gosha.

La Jetee is absolutely essential to own. I'm stoked.

No you will not. But seriously, there are better Fassbinder out there that needs attention. This will sell well due to it being a Sci-fi and Criterion release.

Yeah I will. I may sneak it in and get 3 in February, because right now it looks like I'm only getting Gojira in January. Although I may add in another title on my wishlist there to get the two per month. I'm serious about the car, as the current one needs parts to the tune of 800 bucks. Once you start sinking that kind of money in a car, it's time for a new one.

I might not be a huge Chaplin fan, but too much of 1 filmmaker will turn it into The Chaplin Collection (like Malle is doing). I would be happy to get 1 film a year from Criterion by my fav filmmakers. I actually think they might be working on a set of the early films (maybe not the next release, but someday).

The last part of that is pure crap. You can't tell me there was absolutely nothing they could've done to retain them. I wouldn't blame them if they at least tried to do something but they didn't even try. That's what pisses me off about it.

Good double-feature followup to 12 Angry Men.

Criterion?....And they KEPT the original good-looking iconic Saul Bass poster art for the cover??

...OKAY, WHO ARE THESE IMPOSTORS, AND WHAT HAVE THEY DONE WITH THE REAL CRITERION????

And looks like the predictions were right about Vanya--
Again, no connection to My Dinner with Andre apart from having the actors buddying back with Louis Malle...But since we don't have much Chekov on film, it's a good modern-clothes production, with dialogue updated by David Mamet:

(And I'd seen "Tootsie", but I still didn't know Cmmdt. Lassard/Punky Brewster's dad could do Chekov. )

Criterion has shown time and time again that they adore Kurosawa, so there is nothing to be concerned about - especially for huge titles like Throne of Blood, Rashomon, Hidden Fortress, etc. It's just a matter of time.

And do you think they WANTED the rights to Ran revoked? If they were mere months away from the release, the vast majority of the work (if not all) must have already been completed - meaning it was all for naught. Studio Canal ripped Ran, and a ton of other great titles you don't seem particularly concerned about, away from Criterion, and has made few and predominately poor efforts to release them themselves. So blaming this on Criterion is ridiculous.
Ok, so there are other titles that Criterion cared nothing for besides Ran. Doesn't change the fact that they sat idly by and did nothing. They had to know their rights were close to ending at least a while in advance so why announce it for release if they know they're gonna lose it?

Same here! Kurosawa is one of my favorite but I would love to see Criterion releases movies from Yasujiro Ozu or Kenji Mizoguchi

You better plan again, that's quite a long time to wait for such a lover of said film. Just doesn't make sense.

You are correct . I can't tell you what to believe. But what I have written is a fact, and you have written is a pretty wild speculation, not grounded in reality.

Your criticism is unjustified and Criterion are not to be blamed for anything.
