I am in the same category as you.

I went ultra nuts with DVD. I had gotten some VHS and more Laserdisc in the 90's but with DVD I went ultra crazy to the point that by 2005 I had 1500+ collection of them. By 2008 I started looking at my collection (started in 1998) and noticed that quite a few of them had been bought and watched only once and sat on the shelf collecting dust for almost 10 years. I came to see that as really big serious waste of money and space. I slowly got my DVD collection to where it is now and with Blu-ray I decided to really slow down on buying.

I can't rent (no rental places left unless they're mom and pop dealies that scrape the bottom of the walmart 5-dollar bin for movies, which is not always a good thing), and Netflix is decisively lacking in quality/interesting content Canuckistan. So it's either plunder the torrents, or buy for me. If I plunder the torrents, I usually go buy the film afterwards if I like it enough to rewatch. I'm much more selective about BD than I was for DVD. A lot of DVDs are films I liked 10-15 years ago, but no longer enjoy as much. I keep them for company, or if I do feel like watching them. Most of them were 5 dollar deals from Zellers, HMV, etc of quality films. I think there's only a few I regret buying, but I keep them out of spite.

Netflix doesn't carry all Criterion DVDs and blu-rays? Is there an online rental place that does?

Blockbuster seems to be a bit better with it, so I've noticed.

I don't know about all but Blockbuster online appears to have a lot of them (incuding the handful of Eclipse sets I did a search for). I do not (yet) have an account with them so I can't speak to any of the logistics of turnaround or stock but on the surface at least their CC selection looks far better than NF's.

Most of the Criterions I watch come from there. They don't have Blu-rays, but their customer service is excellent.

Along the same idea, how can someone tell you what film is a "Must Buy" without any criteria?
He did like it. That's the point. I'm sad that he liked it a lot but still won't buy it. I was also joking around, but obviously I should have been more clear on that.

That seems like it would be problematic for me, as I don't have a proper mailbox, I live in an apt, and the post office is in a sketchy area, and often rely on my parents' who live 60KM away from me to receive parcels. I've yet to really be burned by a CC title being a blind buy. As I said, Lola Montes wasn't as enjoyable as I thought it would be, but it is enjoyable and will be watched more than once. It's not like I'm totally blind buying stuff, I'll research the film on here, on IMDB, on Wikipedia, on Criterion's site, and if I can watch some of it before I buy. If I'm really not sure after all that, I'll watch it first.

Video Stores: Is it just me who feels kinda sad video stores are disappearing? I really grew up with those places and introduced me to some films I would never have heard of. Currently, I'm a member of one with an expansive library (it's located in a fancier part of town). Note: NZ has the crappiest internet connection in the OCD... so bad that Netflix declined to set up shop here.

Criterion: The main success of Criterion, I think, lies on it's spine number. It creates the impression that the films that they release are canonized, manifesting the "does this belong to the criterion collection" debate. At the end of the day, they're just a distribution company for profit.

Kino: Credit to Kino, I cannot wait for them to release films in their catalogue on Blu. They own Haneke, for example.

I love the Criterion Collection. I was just saying that I almost always enjoy what they put out (maybe their tastes are similar to mine?) whereas I don't get the same kick out of Kino. That's all I was saying and I really don't think such a big deal needs to be made of it.
all is well.

Yes as much as i was probably guilty of not renting nearly as much as i used to, i literally grew up going to the video store, renting movies based on their cover art, etc....everything from early 80's slasher flicks to past Oscar winners.

Same here. Used to rent lots of NES and Super NES games when I was a kid as well. I still fondly recall the local video rental store having only one copy of Super Mario Bros 3 first when it came out, and waiting at the store for the person who had it rented to bring it back so that I could play it for one day. Good times.

I would say it's their Track-Record. They release some films that leave me a little down (like Kagemusha for instance) but they knock it out of the park more times than not.

It's kind of like Disney..... when I see "Bambi" or "The Lion King" are coming out on Blu-ray, I don't need to wait for reviews to decide if it's going to be a worthy upgrade from the DVD...... I just "expect" perfection

Yeah, that's a contributing factor. We get to argue which films deserve to be "treated" with extra care and included in the canon.

*and by OCD, I meant OECD.

No, he might be on to something. When trees fall in the forest they make a mess whether there's anybody there to be bother by it or not.

All the polling is complete. The results will most likely be posted tomorrow morning. I'm at work and don't have the time to format them and make it look pretty.

Coming soon...

I didn't particularly like it the first time I saw it either. It's one of those movies that grows on you. I would urge you to give it some time and then try it again.

Any chance of Criterion remastering this film? The video/audio quality of the UK, Spain, and Australian DVDs isn't supposed to be so great.

YES, it's on Criterion's Hulu page.
