I didn't know that they used a different camera for part 2. I thought they used the RedOne camera for both parts.

1) how many Criterion discs a person owns (I hope everyone remembered to list that in your original order)

2) how many OPENED & WATCHED Criterions a person owns

3) how many complaints about not receiving the cases a person has made on message boards across the internet

4) miscellaneous purchases directly from the Criterion store... t-shirts, posters, gift cards, etc.

The list goes on... but, as you can see it's a much more complicated process than any of us could've thought.

I am sure I am wrong on that, but it is odd they switched ratios.

"Soderbergh shot Part 2 in a conventional aspect ratio, as opposed to the widescreen format of the first. With Che's capture, his world shrinks, and he's depicted more in isolated close-up." - excerpt from his review, Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune.

I guess both parts had a different feel and tone, so Soderbergh accommodated the appropriate aspect ratios to each part.

So they were out of cases, got a shipment in, sent you yours, then send me an email saying they are out and expecting some in two MORE weeks?

You'd think after running out so many times, they'd stock up and order a lot of replacement cases...
Their whole replacement cases process makes no sense at all. This is one of the most inefficient processes I've ever seen from a business. Ya, I'll probably take heat for that but I'll bet once people get past their love of all things Criterion they'll know it's true.

So there IS an artistic explanation for the aspect ratio change. Interesting.....

They talked about it a little bit in the documentary on this disc about the Red camera. They wanted a different look for each of the films. Part 1 is shot with an anamorphic lens, which in addition to setting the AR to 2.39:1 also made things look softer and more film-like. Part 2 is in 1.78:1 and was shot without an anamorphic lens and is therefore a bit sharper, in some cases "too sharp" for Soderburgh's preference.

There were artistic reasons for this that were at least partially touched on in the Red special feature - he mentioned in Part 1 he didn't do any closeups on Che on purpose (except in the "interview" footage).

I haven't seen any more of the making of footage, as I don't want to spoil the films before I see them, but I'm sure they go more in depth.

EDIT

I suppose that's what I was looking for.

Well I own them, but didnt buy them "back then". I paid a premium for them while they were OOP.

However, upscaled on the ps3 they look wonderful, and just seeing them in my CC is great.

A blu transfer would only just polish them up a bit, but considering the sources it most likly wont be such a dramatic difference as some other old releases

Yep. O shi = Oshima.

There's no blue in the pic, so I'm assuming DVD only.

It's an Eclipse set, so yeah, no Blu.
