Might be a little early to be thinking of this, but I've decided that I'm buying either 6 or 7 Criterion blus during the (hopefully) upcoming B&N sale. I have locked in the following:

Being John Malkovich
Traffic
The Last Temptation of Christ
Summer Interlude
Solaris

So that's 5, and I know that they will be awesome additions to my collection. For the 6th and possibly 7th titles, can some of you guys give me some recommendations? Perhaps something a lot different then anything else I own? Or "cornerstone" pieces that I really should have, being a big film buff and Criterion fan? Thanks guys!

Based on what people like Spidey have told me about the transfer/quality of the original source...it is unlikely that it will get an upgrade to blu.

Wow, it goes for that much now? WOW! I bought the plastic case a while back and the movie on July 15, 2009 at Barnes and Noble for $17.95 plus $4.17 for the case.

So you're telling me I can get $156 USD for it?

I don't think I could bring myself to sell it. It's one of my most cherished Criterions.

Now months later, I regret not upgrading my DVD. I figured the DVD was enough since I only watch it once in a while. Well life goes on we learn from our mistakes

I wonder if there are some still sitting in stores.

Or maybe there's a dude who had no idea what it was worth and traded it in to a store that re-sells trade ins,

I think chances are slim, people are aware in general of the crazy stuff Criterion goes for at time, even those who have no interest in the movies they release. I sometime think in pawn shop or something like could be a place to find one at low price if one search and get's lucky. In regular stores or trade in websites very little chances

There are many I can recommend, but I'll limit it to the following...

For "cornerstone" pieces, The Red Shoes and Beauty and the Beast would make excellent additions. (I would also include the upcoming Umberto D. in this category.)

Judging from your list and your existing collection, you seem to also value social commentary and some fairly "controversial" films, so I also suggest The Battle of Algiers, La Haine and (if you can handle its explicit depictions) Salo.

You also seem to like drama infused with a bit of fantasy, and for that I consider Wings of Desire to be top-notch and unforgettable (and Beauty and the Beast, too, come to think of it ).

These all rank among my favorite films in the collection so far.

(You asked for two; I gave you seven. Sorry, but sometimes I have difficulty narrowing down my selections. )

They have lined up:

1. BRD Trilogy upgrade/reissue
2. Lili Marleen (hopefully they are still working on this. Besides Fassbinder's yet to be released T.V. projects, this is my most wanted as I pretty much have everything else/has been released).
3. Janus recently snatched up all of the OOP Wellspring Fassbinders, so 12 films to look forward to there (and I hope they make all of them mainline, because I will be pissed if they shove great films like Effi Briest, Satan's Brew, or Fear of Fear in a Eclipse together while they choose what to make blu-rays of like Chinese Roulette).

Berlin Alexanderplatz, a 15 hour made for T.V. film looks wonderful on dvd. It's IMO Criterion's best release/package, and the best film in the Collection. Any more reasons not to pick this up? Not to mention, Fear Eats the Soul will prob get an upgrade before it too.

I recently rented The Third Man Criterion Blu-Ray from Netflix. So if anyone's thinking about "borrowing" a copy...

Is the new Lionsgate Blu-Ray decent though? Because I do want to buy the movie.

Most reports I have seen indicate the Studio Canal / Lionsgate version is just fine. It's maybe a bit more smoothed out than the Criterion, but doesn't go overboard with the DNR. It has some nice extras too (just not the Criterion ones).

Awesome. Thanks for the info. It's nice to see what's coming over the horizon. Looks like I'll have to go ahead and pick up Berlin Alexanderplatz. No sense in waiting for nothing, since this is one of the ones I want the most (from Criterion...then again, there's quite a few I still want...but you guys get the idea).

A creepy tale I would myself, also like to see be released. Possibly in October? Or at least soon...one of my faves.

I'm sort of in the same boat. I bought this on DVD before I had a bluray player. I think at the time, the DVD also got glowing reviews. (I know, I know ... DVD is not in the same league as bluray).

The DVD is good but of course the Blu-ray really kick's it in the rear It's the same movie DVD or Blu-ray of course, it would still have been a good upgrade. I got the DVD back in 1999 and I watched the movie (I do keep track of that) 4 times from 1999 to 2008 and twice since then but I suspect it's because of the Blu-ray

whats the advantage of the Criterion vernon of 'Third Man' over the Studio Canal version....or is it just the thrill of the OOP chase? I personally don't find the film THAT good to pay over $50 USD, but thats just me

The Complete Monterey Pop Festival (A steal at the sale price)
The Red Shoes (You might as well get Black Narcissus, too)
Belle du jour (Holds up really well with repeat viewings)
Vivre sa vie (Anna Karina, Gordard - get it)

Then there's Last Year at Marienbad which I recognize isn't for everybody but imo it's the best blu-ray Criterion has released thus far. It has infinite replay value because it can be viewed so many ways. It's a great work of art.
