I've still only watched it once but I'm pretty much on Team Antichrist as well.

I can definitely understand why many people feel some of the goofier/ more extreme images are simply there for shock value but that wasn't my impression. They didn't completely fit but they didn't seem self-consciously out-of-place either. And yeah, it is absolutely gorgeous overall.

The plot/story definitely has its issues but I found it fairly interesting (or at least intriguing) in a Repulsion sort of way.

I would never recommend it as a blind buy but I wouldn't hesitate to tell people to give it a watch.

John Cassavetes' Husbands Heading Back to UK Cinemas

Quote:
American maverick actor-writer-director John Cassavetes' touching and brutal Husbands (1970) is heading back to cinemas. Recently restored by Sony Pictures, the film will be re-released theatrically in the UK from 28 September, opening at BFI Southbank.

Husbands follows three middle-aged husbands (Ben Gazzara, Peter Falk, John Cassavetes), with wives and houses in the New York suburbs, who go on a wild spree after a close friend dies of a heart attack. Ending up in London, the three must confront their own mortality and decide how to spend the rest of their lives.

Note: The film will be re-released theatrically on a brand new DCP.

I would recommend either M which is a social commentary masterpiece that everyone who's a serious film lover must see or Modern Times which, if you enjoy slapstick comedy in a classic, silent film, you will find hilarious. I consider them two of the best in the entire Criterion Collection.

If it helps most Barnes & Nobles if you talk to someone in the Movie dept will order you in copies of titles just confirm the sale is going to happen (Sure it will) I've had them order in copies of titles for me and you don't have to pay until you pick them up in the store. Hope this helps. Just specify BLU ray or get their catalog #s for the BLUs from their site and read them off they can confirm them.

With the Cassavetes' titles that have been released by BFI. One can only wonder maybe in NOV. Criterion will announce the box set for release.... and maybe Husbands once they are able. One can wonder, hope.

I know. They used to have a big movie section (DVDs and Blu Rays) but now they just have a smaller selection of DVDs.

It's true that Modern Times and M are good, classic, safe suggestions.

If House interested you, though, I'd give it a look if you want something a little more out there.

I don't know how I missed the B&N buy 2, get 3rd free sale. Most Criterions have standard pricing, but The Gold Rush, Shallow Grave, and The 39 Steps are all $27.99 which is surprising since they're relatively new. If you happen to want those 3, this is better than the 50% deal. My order came to just under $56 before tax. I wish a few more were that price right now...

So, then, the Criterion blu of Modern Times is something of a dream come true for you (in a little, metaphorical way, of course ). Isn't it nice when that happens?

Good point. It's just too bad more (if not all) the Criterion titles are do not have a lower B&N base price to start with. Most of the titles are at B&N's usual higher price points, which won't save most people much more (if anything) than they would if they just shopped at Amazon or DeepDiscount.

I finally watched the 4th of the 4 Jean-Pierre Melville films i own, Leon Morin, Priest. I have really enjoyed all of them (the others being Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, and Le Silence De La Mer).

I think Le Silence De La Mer is still my favorite, but Leon Morin is a close 2nd.

After watching the commentary and deleted scenes, it really made me want to see what the 3 hour version of the film is like. Does anyone know if that has ever been made available?

The supplemental stuff, as well as the planning I'm doing for an upcoming trip to Japan, made me want to see Hiroshima Mon Amour. Any fans of that film in these parts?

A film I'm interested in that noone mentions is The Rules of the Game. It's supposed to be the greatest film ever made but noone talks about it!

I enjoyed it, myself. I haven't read too much about it though, so I'm always confused about why it has that reputation of being the greatest.
