*The Ice Storm
*Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
*Z
*Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara

For the hell of it - future releases wanted:

*The Game
*The Royal Tenenbaums
*Umberto D.
*Weekend
*Eclipse Series 35: Maidstone and Other Films by Norman Mailer
Re: your DVD selections coming to blu, I would recommend waiting for a blu-ray release of The Ice Storm, as, to me, that Ang Lee film seems an obvious choice for Criterion to upgrade to blu.

As for your other selections, it looks as if we have much in common as there are a few titles that I own or want to own that are on your list:

The Game
The Royal Tenenbaums
Umberto D.
Weekend
Eclipse Series 32: Pearls of the Czech New Wave

...and almost everything from the blu (first) section of your list.

A nice list if I do say so myself.

Gosford Park is one of Robert Altman's best. It deserves a Criterion blu release (as does Nashville and a host of other Altman films).

I still have to watch The Rules of the Game. It's in my collection already.

Any thoughts on "Wings of Desire"? I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on that one if/when B&N has their 50% off sale.

I'm going to go against the grain here, but I found it extremely pretentious. Although it is wonderfully lensed. Most will tell you it is awesome and a 'must own'. Personally I can't stand characters that just mouth poetry over and over or are over philosophical. However I found Peter Falks part great and there were a few great moments in the film. So I don't have a hatred for the film. It's just not my cup of tea.

Kino as has been said. To include: Shorts - Day Of The Fight, The Flying Padre, The Seafarers and feature - Fear And Desire

One of my most anticipated discs right now.

Mishima is one of the four Hulu discount films at the Criterion site now. You can get it 50% off with the code: SCORE. I think shipping is about $5 though under $50.

Wings of Desire from Wim Wenders is easily one of my favorite films in the entire Criterion Collection. If you have any interest in it, you should do yourself a favor and buy it (or, at least rent it if you're really unsure).

Thanks for all of your thoughts ... the good and the bad. After giving it some thought, I should expect that most people in here would give this a thumbs up, being a Criterion forum and all. I've never seen the movie, but I hear/read good things about it every once in a while. I saw "City of Angels" and liked that, so I'm assuming I'd like "Wings of Desire" too (hopefully moreso).

Hey Everyone! Great thread you've got going here! I'm the newbie (although I registered years ago).

Was getting freaked out with all this talk of no July 50% off sale, so I skipped on over to Barnes and Noble today with my 20% off coupon and took advantage of buy two get one free. All movies I've yet to watch, bought:
Shallow Grave (love Danny Boyle! Yes, even The Beach )

La Haine (looked interesting and I just got back from Paris a couple weeks ago so I'm still on a French kick)

Wings of Desire (sounds incredible and someone told me if you love Terrence Malick (I do!!!) then you'll like Wim Wenders)

My collection is now up to 28.

Watched half of Wages Of Fear last night, gonna watch the rest tonight. First time watching that one too!

Now if the sale still happens the top of my list is The Complete Monterey Pop.

Similar in some ways...totally different in others. Wings of Desire is, quote-unquote, more "artsy" even though I don't like such a term...Perhaps "better thought out/executed" is more accurate. Don't get me wrong, I enjoed City of Angels to some degree, but Wings of Desire I feel is still very different. But you'll get a positive vote from me. I thought it was incredibly interesting and one of those movies that makes you think (though many of these Criterions tend to do that). Anyways, if you get it, I hope you enjoy it. There's also a big plus in that Nick Cave makes an appearance...you can't go wrong with a little Nick Cave

Last night I decided to watch once again the release by Flicker Alley of George Melies

Le Voyage Dans La Lune 1902 (A Trip To The Moon)

It was the very controversial version however, the one in color with the soundtrack by Air. It's a interesting movie to watch considering it's only 15 minutes long and as no cards to explain or narrate the story. Overall it's pretty easy to follow. I would not recommend that anyone should buy the release by Flicker Allley, it's not cheap for a 15 minute movies but if you do get the chance to rent it or maybe see it on TV, I do recommend it. It's one of those movie that should be seen at least once

I checked out a few of those after I saw Hugo. I don't know how often I'd re-watch them, but I'd love to have them in my collection. That release is a little too much for my wallet right now, but I agree that any film buff should definitely check them out.

Indeed. 'Naked' is one of those pictures you have to see for yourself, because it is quite unique. Any comparison to something like 'Wings of Desire' is bound to be a bit misleading for someone who hasn't seen 'Naked'.

I can see that it might not be everyone's cup of tea - Thewlis's character is altogether rather unpleasant, but fascinating to watch. He is a pretentious pocket philosopher. The other characters are various combinations of sad, mean, pathetic, weird... I love the film but always feel rather flat after watching it. Haven't watched my bluray of it yet.

Would love to see a bit more Mike Leigh in the Criterion collection - perhaps 'Life is Sweet' or 'Secrets and Lies'...

Head is on TCM now in a screwy aspect ratio. the bd looks way better. Watch it if you can despite the aspect ratio screws up.

I find him to be quite funny as well:

[Show spoiler]"You look like shit." - "Just trying to blend in with the surroundings."
"Talk shite in a fortnight."
"What's her name again?" - "Maggie!" - "Oh yeah."
"Dadaist nun."
Plus pretty much everything he says to the poster guy.

I think Flicker Alley did a swell job, although I would've preferred a standard release to the steelbook (and may eventually trade down).
I think the steelbook was for raising prices a bit and try to catch those that buy any steelbook no matter what. I suppose I would have gone for a regualr release also but I really wanted this even at the price it was going for
