So, how's this sound for the upcoming sale?
Fish Tank Shallow Grave 39 Steps Being John Malkovich (dvd upgrade) War Room The Gold Rush Letter Never Sent I've seen Shallow Grave, Gold Rush, 39 Steps, and Being John Malkovich. War Room I want to see due to my interest in politics, and my amusement at James Carville. Letter Never Sent, I don't know much about, but it'll be 15 bucks. Fish Tank for some reason appeals to me, but I can't explain why. I'd also like Harold & Maude, Night To Remember and Last Days of Disco, but I may wait until the November sales for those what with me having to save money for the James Bond, Universal Monsters, Hitchcock, and Indiana Jones sets in Sept/Oct. |

I'd rather have an upgrade of Juliet of the Spirits and La Dolce Vita from another company.
I'm dying for an upgrade of The Scarlet Empress and wasn't Shanghai Express in the pipe as well? |

I don't watch as many movies during the summer time but I still try to catch a few. Tonight it was Kurosawa,
Yojino 1961 (Yojimbo) For the person who watch this for the very first time, if you feel it as a look of an American western, don't be surprise, it does. Plus if you are watching it for the first time and you feel it look's very similar to a western you may have seen, that's because it is. Sergio Leone remade this into a western in 1964 A Fist Full Of Dollars. A lone samurai walk's into a town where two rival gangs are figthing for control. He soon as both side trying to have him fight for them since his skills are duperior over those of the gangs. He seem a bad guy but look's can be deceiving and he may not be such a bad guy afterall. I feel Yojimbo is a very good introduction for those not familiar with the samurai movies. It as a very American style and is a bit shorter than the longer epic Seven Samurai. Toshiro Mifune is in top form in this one, one of is many epic roles. For those looking for a blind buy I would say it's save enough but would still recommend a rental if you can manage it first. |

I also clearly wouldn't spit on a BD of The spy who came in from the cold and Ivan's Childhood ! ![]() But I think that it is sad, all their titles released only on DVD just when they were switching to BD-all-the-time : The Fugitive Kind, Louie Bluie, Dillinger Is Dead, Z, etc. These are movies that could clearly have been released on BD, since the material seems very likely to allow it, technically speaking. I wouldn't be surprised if they are released at some point, but I would guess it's not Criterion priority at all, and it will take probably an awful lot of time for these gaps to be filled. |

I've been using my summer and the typically reduced number of TV shows I watch to try to catch up on films I've blind-bought but still haven't seen, especially those from Criterion. Yesterday, I finished watching one such film:
![]() Amarcord by Federico Fellini When I bought this title, I wasn't sure if I'd like it, even though I really enjoyed Fellini's 8-1/2. It turns out that, even though the more recent Amarcord is quite different in look, tone and story structure, I very much enjoyed it. It amounts to a filmmaker telling his recollections about growing up. It's a nice blend of both drama and offbeat, playful comedy, all intriguingly lensed. I recommend it to anyone who is curious, though you may wish to give it a rent first. The on-disc supplemental package is rather thorough as well and it all comes in a remarkable digipak. Let me add a little back round to this. I don't rent or stream movies. If i am buying a movie, it's either a blind buy or something I've seen in the theatre and liked.
My wife also prefers watching movies with me that i haven't seen before so we can see them for the first time together. So far we have watched 3 Korean movies together: Secret Sunshine, Poetry, and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Sheesh. Are there any non-intense Korean flicks? I suppose Poetry isn't *super* intense, but you still have [Show spoiler] I'm not complaining, as I've liked all 3, and Secret Sunshine is easily one of my top 10 Criterion Blus, but I'd like to find a solid Korean film that won't give my wife nightmares. Any one have any suggestions? |

But, yes, you're right about Korean cinema. It does tend to be intense, though not always in the sense of the visual, superficial or physical. A lot of it is emotionally intense. Honestly, I can't think of any Korean film that isn't intense in some way. But, then, that's part of what makes those films so captivating, don't you think? Are you planning to see the two sequels to Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance, all from Park Chan-Wook? I would also highly recommend his vampire story, Thirst. And, yes, they're all intense. ![]() Last edited by BluPix; 07-05-2012 at 04:29 PM. |

yep, Sunny is a good one. Architecture 101, just came out I think.
There's also A Good Rain Knows. They make some nice romantic movies. I wish someone would release Peppermint Candy on blu (perfect title for Criterion?) I would also recommend The President's Last Bang. It's intense but it has a sense of humour. |
