![]() It's a legitimate gripe, though. Criterion probably should have included a separate disc (CD perhaps) that contains, in its entirety, each piece of music that was featured in the film. But I suppose that probably would lead to additional licensing issues and expenses. |

ES 21 appeals to me as well, though I don't know if I'll be able to squeeze it into my other purchases for this sale (there really seems to be a lot that I've been thinking of buying). Maybe at the next B&N sale or if there's another sale or discount... Last edited by BluPix; 07-09-2012 at 06:14 AM. |

I agree. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of those old classics everyone should see and it helped impress upon me James Stewart's status of one of the best actors Hollywood ever had. He's long been one of my very favorite actors from that era, especially for his films from the 1950s.

Lena Dunham has now gone on to do GIRLS on HBO which is a great growth from Tiny Furniture (I watched them backward with all of GIRLS and then Tinty Furniture). The first episode was middling but then the second and third episodes really pack a kick. It writes extremely entitled white characters but then doesn't pull the punch by making fun of, denigrating or playing them ironically (think Woody Allen with Alice or Husbands and Wives). They are all very different in story, drama and tone. Each comes with a video essay that really helps contextualise Teshigahara's work with his screenwriter, novelistic Kobo Abe, and their shared themes and politics. Although made in the 60s, Teshigahara seemed to favour a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, however the films never seem visually cramped. Visually, each is quite slick, but still quite gritty. He used the same cinematographer on each film. He also used the same composer: Tôru Takemitsu. His work is fantastic and very memorable. I highly recommend this set and I don't believe it suffers for being DVD. I got mine at the B&N sale last year (I think) and loved the films. |

For those of us who would like to see David Lynch in the collection, Eraserhead was added to the Criterion Hulu page.

Just finished watching The Phantom Carriage. Loved the film, but it seems like a lot of people suggested the KTL score, and so I began with that, but started the film over with the orchestral one after a while. The KTL score is just so awkward to me with its consistently ominous mood that trundles on while the mood of the film is obviously changing. I thought it was rather bland, but that's why there are options. Just seems like I'm the only one who doesn't like it.

Particularly given the woeful recent UK releases that I highly anticipated. Cue speculation for Mulholland Drive in 3, 2.... |

Completely off topic, but I finally watched my MoC Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend. Both looked superb. The 3 hour BBC extra on The Lost Weekend is worth the price of admission alone. Quite possibly one of the best special features ever created. Last edited by Banned User; 07-09-2012 at 02:37 PM. |

Thanks for encouraging to pop my copies of both those films that I recently received from preorders into my player and watching them. (It would be my first time seeing The Lost Weekend.) I'm looking forward to it.

I do think, as others have said, that this is one of the best silent films that Criterion offers. In fact, it's one of my favorite silent films ever. It's at the top of my list of films to buy starting tomorrow during the sale. |
